Day 8 We left Budapest so fast it was as though the devil was chasing us. On the road by 7am and we didn't even eat breakfast which would cause problems for us later. Driving through Slovakia was really beautiful and nothing like we expected. Through the rain we saw mountainous forests, pretty little villages with small houses and gardens and plenty of run down/abandoned houses and factories but we couldn't find a place to eat at all. We got to the Poland border in about 4 hours and the landscape changed dramatically to farmland and suddenly the sun came out. We kept making the joke "we visited a farm today. You know? Poland." The golden orange sun was just setting into the river when we arrived in Krakow and we sat in construction traffic trying ... read more

Day 5 Well, today was a driving day and it was pretty rough. Over mountains, through blinding rain and against strong winds. We left Salzburg early and drove for 8 hours, although that includes many leisurely stops for sightseeing, photos and lunch. Most of the driving was spent in Austria and we decided it is to Germany what Nebraska is to Colorado! ;) When we crossed into Hungary they pulled us over because we didn't have a "vignette" which is a toll payment for each country you go to. The fine was $150!!!!! That's a hard lesson! We finally made it and put our grumpy, we don't have $150 faces away and checked into our hotel. Unfortunately, in the time it took us to take our bags up to the room, we got a parking ticket! ... read more

Day 4 If the trip continues like this it is going to be the most amazing vacation of ALL TIME! We travelled to the German mountain town of Berchtesgaden and it is the most beautiful place on earth. A 900 year old village with a crystal clear aquamarine stream, alpine houses with flower boxes and goats grazing on the hill, men in mountain clothes, Bavarian folk musicians playing on the street and a perfect little cemetery. We took a tour of Nazi bunkers and the Eagle's Nest (Hitler's personal teahouse) and saw mountain views that almost made us forget Colorado. We kept up our daily sausage/sauerkraut/beer diet and we're looking forward the next part of our trip, Budapest!... read more

Day 3 The drive to Salzburg was amazing! Lush, green and colorful with flowers, forests, farm land, villages and mountains. But the drive was nothing compared to how beautiful the city of Salzburg is! We spent the whole day wandering the narrow, cobblestone streets taking pictures, eating and loving. The walk from the hotel is along the river which runs through the middle of the city and the view is of many cathedrals and the Festung Hohensalzburg Castle which sits on top of Mönchs Mountain. It was built in 1077 and is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. We took pictures at a couple Sound of Music film locations (cause it's Marleah's favorite movie!), ate schnitzel and goulasch, drank beer and wine, saw Mozart's house, meandered through the Mirabellgarten (garden), ate Turkish food, drank ... read more

Day 1 We're here in Munich and it's beautiful! Hotel check in and then off to the Viktualienmarkt, an outdoor food market that has been in the Munich city center since 1807! Wowee! So much cured meat for John and flowers for Marleah. We bought tons of German schnapps made from roots, ate super spicy dönerkebap (Turkish yumminess), enjoyed the buildings, did some shopping, bought chocolate for late night snacking and sat at a cafe for coffee and people watching. We are so tired and it's off to bed for us even though it's only 5:30pm here. Jet lag is blödes! Day 2 We had big plans for today but after a few hiccups and an ugly sweater return to h&m we had to rearrange our day. We had the best fall-off-your-chair breakfast pastries, bought new ... read more
