Madison/Mount Horeb/Milwaukee - 8th Day It's our last day in Wisconsin. There's time for one more lunchtime get-together with Mavis before we have to drive to Milwaukee for our 5pm flight. Mount Horeb (mostly Norwegians) is this little town just outside Madison and is called the "Troll Capital of the World". The main street is called the "Trollway" and troll statues can be found all through the town. We had to have lunch there amidst all that awesomeness! We ate at a place called The Grumpy Troll, shopped at a Norwegian imports store (of course we bought a troll), took pictures with some of our new friends, said our sad goodbyes to cousin Mavis and had to dash to the airport. It was a great trip and we're sad to go, we saw so many amazing ... read more

Madison - 7th Day Today the three of us did some touristy sightseeing. We started at Cave of the Mounds, a limestone cave full of cool formations that started forming 488 million years ago. Next we visited Little Norway, a Norwegian farm started in the 1850's. It was then bought in the 1930's and kept as a museum to preserve the Norwegian way of life. The biggest and most amazing building is the "Norway Building", it was built for the 1893 World's Fair then purchased and moved to Little Norway in 1935. We would love to live in it. The whole place was old and magical, tucked into the woods and we wanted to stay forever. Mavis wanted to take us to a local vineyard for a wine tasting but unfortunately they were closed so we ... read more

Spring Green/Madison - 6th Day So, we watched a girl get arrested at 8am then drove to Spring Green, Wisconsin to tour Taliesin, the home, studio and architecture school of Frank Lloyd Wright. Mavis met us for the 2 hour tour. We saw the architecture school which is still in existence, Frank Lloyd Wright's personal studio and Taliesin, the house he lived in with his family and was constantly redesigning. The buildings and furnishings are almost the same as when he was alive and it was amazing to get a glimpse into his life. The use of abstract imagery to draw you closer to nature was astounding. Lunch was burgers (we eat burgers for every meal) at a sports/biker bar that Mavis loves. A quick drive down the road to Madison, check in, dump our bags, ... read more

Wisconsin Dells - 5th Day After an early morning goodbye we left Minocqua and drove 3 hours south to Wisconsin Dells, checked into the Great Wolf Lodge then met up with Laurie's brother and his wife and son, Nelson. After spending time catching up and looking at old family pictures we went to downtown touristy Wisconsin Dells. We split up pretty quick because the kids, John, Marleah and Nelson, wanted to go to "Wizard's Quest" and the adults wanted to shop. Wizard's Quest is an interactive game where you run around and solve riddles and puzzles to rescue the trapped wizards. It was a totally fun, fantastical game with hidden doors, slides, trick mirrors, fairies, a castle, unicorns, dragons, and trolls, all based on the elements. It was work trying to keep up with Marleah's 14 ... read more

Minocqua - 1st Day Yikes! 4 am alarm time! Surprisingly the drive to the airport was hassle free and so was our pre flight experience. Usually we get stuck in traffic, red flagged and searched by the genius TSA flunkies, etc. This time nothing got in the way of us boarding on time, John fell asleep on schedule and a couple hours later we landed at the dilapidated Minneapolis airport. The rudest Budget employee explained how expensive it is to rent one way, we hopped in the weird car and drove through surprisingly cool looking St. Paul on our way to nowhere north woods. The drive through Wisconsin farmland was really pretty to look at when we could keep our eyes open. Thankfully Marleah's mom Laurie loves to drive and we love to sleep so that's ... read more

Day 17 Oh geez louise, driving in Brussels is so hard!!!! The street signs, which are in two languages, don't match the map and it took us forever to get out of there. On the highway there was car accident traffic jams, construction and blinding rain and then when we crossed the border into France the rain stopped and the sun came out. We love love love the French countryside! Far reaching plowed fields of all colors, hillside villages of old homes and farm houses all centered around a little church, tree lined lanes, big open sky and autumn colored trees filled with birds. Black Sabbath on the radio, speeding down the road, excited for Paris. Well, then we got to Paris... It took ages to find the car rental return, it started raining and the ... read more

Day 15 On the road again, Brussels awaits! Mad driving, mad parking and surprisingly our hotel was just a couple blocks from the parking lot, how lucky. We totally pigged out for lunch. Steak, croquettes, salad, bread, beer. And we got lucky again because our hotel room is the loft on the top floor and there's a bathtub! A little wandering in our neighborhood, some dinner and snacks from the market end today, not too eventful. Now it's time to lay in the tub with the big windows open to the sky and enjoy the thunderstorm. A full moon on the equinox does make it a magical night. Day 16 Oh no! Poor John has a cold and was up all night with a fever. It musta been that boat. We definitely took it easy this ... read more

Day 13 The drive to Amsterdam took about 4 hours. We parked the car outside the city and took the metro to the central station. Our hotel is on a boat and the walk there was great. We walked over bridges, saw a heron and passed a floating Chinese restaurant covered in lights! The room is teeny tiny and sorta wet but what do you expect, it's a boat! It's really sweet and totally fun and the man and wife who run it are wonderful. After getting our sea legs we decided to venture back to land for some dinner. We ate Greek food and Marleah found a new kitten best friend, then we wandered the cute cute streets having tons of house crushes and pretending which ones we would live in. We also walked around ... read more

Day 12 Ohhh wowee, what a day!! We drove about 5 hours across Germany to Wewelsburg and straight to the castle. Small gorgeous town, forests and farms, up little hills to the amazing Wewelsburg castle that was built in the 1400's. We had reserved a room inside the castle and we were so excited to stay there. After we paid we found out there was a huge group of elementary age school kids staying in the castle on a field trip and we could hear them from our room. It was crazy in there. So, we drove down the street to the small city of Paderborn and immediately checked into a new hotel! The "best" part was that we pulled into the wrong gated parking lot and couldn't get out because you had to have a ... read more

Day 11 Driving through Poland was sooooo booooring! It's just like Nebraska. The only thing interesting was the forest right before we reached the border where people had foraged for mushrooms and were selling them on the side of the road. Nothing in the world feels better than Germany right now! At 3:00 we arrived in Beelitz, the sparglestadt of Germany (the white asparagus capital). But we weren't there for the asparagus, we were there to explore the Beelitz-Heilstätten Sanatorium. A huge abandonded hospital complex with tons of wonderful run down buildings which means lots of wonderful pictures. We tried to get in one of the main buildings but since we didn't bring a flashlight we couldn't make it up out of the basement, it was really dark. We had so much fun! Walhalla hotel in ... read more
