Cusco - Day 1 - $50 cab ride from the airport to our hotel.
- John lost his ATM/Credit Card. This occurred during a cab ride
which we were basically coerced into by what turned out to be a really
pushy event booking agent. We needed to stop and get cash, so of course
the agent picked this weird, shady kiosk ATM and wouldn't stop talking
during the entire transaction. John, not being a fan of incessant
chatter or kiosks atypically left his card in the machine.
- Checked into our hotel and it's really nice, comfy and quiet.
- Ate lunch at a place called Jack's which is run by an Australian woman, we had salad.
- Walked around the streets for awhile. Very hilly, cool looking city.
- Ate dinner at a nice Italian restaurant called Cicciolina. It's
named after a woman from Italy who was a porn star and a member of
parliment, they had a picture of her hanging above the bar. We ate
guinea pig confit and it was pretty tasty.
- Finished the evening walking in the main square and taking pictures.
Cusco - Day 2
- Marleah's dad, Steve and his friend Chad arrive, they are staying in the same hotel.
- Marleah got altitude sickness and spent the whole day throwing up and sleeping.
Cusco is 10,800 feet above sea level! John went to the
pharmacy to get some medicine for Marleah which did help a bit and we
bought a bag of coca leaves to chew which also alleviate altitude
sickness. They are also used to overcome fatigue, hunger, and thirst. We
all chewed them for the entire trip. Chad is the only other person to
get sick but he wouldn't admit it, guess only girls get sick...
- Later in the evening Steve, Chad and John went out for hamburgers at a "British" pub and Marleah stayed in bed.
Cusco - Day 3 - After breakfast the four of us headed out to check out Cusco. Walking
around town, shopping, lunch at Jack's. The local people are extremely
pushy and constantly trying to get you buy everything and anything. If
you take a picture of the traditionally dressed beautiful people who
walk around with llamas you have to pay them money. They
don't tell you
until you've taken the picture. We don't mind paying for stuff but it
was a bit overwhelming with people coming at you from all sides all day
long.
- After a hotel pit stop we hiked to Sacsayhuaman. It is a walled
complex on the northern outskirts of the city of Cusco, the former
capital of the Inca Empire. It is made of large polished dry stone
walls, with boulders carefully cut to fit together tightly without
mortar and really an absolutely incredible place! Also, Aliens!
- Evening drinks at an Irish Pub
- Went to a meeting with our tour guides for the Inca Trail Hike
starting tomorrow. Most of our traveling companions seem to fall into
one of three categories: ONE - Treating the hike as a winner-takes-all
marathon-type event which they WILL DOMINATE and crush all weaklings;
TWO - worried about how many opportunities there will be to purchase
alcohol and snickers (none, despite the assurances of the guides); THREE -
complete bewilderment about what's to come and how we got there (us).
- Back to the Irish Pub for dinner. There is a lot of postulating
about what's
to come and many theories about how being from Colorado is
an advantage. John needs a cigarette.
