Oceania August 30th 2013

Had a beaut day in tn the Bay of Islands, we were anchored quite a way off shore and were tendered into Waitagi Wharf which took about 20 minutes. The weather was still a chilly 12 degrees but sun was shining - was very pleasant walking around the area. Took a local ferry across to Russell - where the first licensed hotel in New Zealand is situated - Duke of Marlborough - had a yummy lunch of fish and chips and a nice bottle of local Syrah. Could have sat over lunch for another hour or two, Rae and Jim joined us for the day - a great time had by all. Russell is a very quaint little village - can see why so many people come to this area for holidays etc - the whole ... read more

We know we are close to home now, 14 degree top and raining in Auckland, haven't seen these temps for weeks. Walked to Parnell Village which is a lovely shopping strip on the edge of the CBD, then back into town and as the day went on it became colder - so went to the movies. Were in Auckland in January so had done a lot of the sights previously. Don't sail til 8.00p.m. tonight to the Bay of Islands.... read more

Arrived in Suva at 7.00a.m. - had a leisurely breakfast and decided to just walk around the town itself - after all the amazing places we have been Suva was a little uninspiring - but the weather was a lovely breezy 24 so perfect for a long walk. Walked about 7kms along the beachfront past Albert Park, their big sporting ground, Thurston Gardens which is a very nice botanical park lush with flowering plants, shady trees and lily ponds. Overlooking these gardens is the Government Houses which is a very grand looking mansion - over the top when you see the basic homes people have to live in around the place - sadly lacking TLC, many beggars and the beaches close to town were strewn with endless rubbish, plastic bags and bottles. People very friendly and ... read more

Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango) - what a breath of fresh air after five days at sea. Very mountainous and lush, with lovely friendly people. While it was high 20's temp here today, the cooling trade winds made it feel not so humid. We had a long walk around the main area - then decided to catch a local bus around the bays and over the top of the mountain around the national park, it was a lovely trip with gorgeous scenery and a great way to engage with all the locals who were so friendly on the bus. When we arrived at Vatia at the end of the bus line we took a walk around the cove and through the village and then caught a bus back to Pago Pago. There were churches on every ... read more

Kauai today - 8.00a.m. docking in Nawiliwili- had a nice walk around the local area in the morning an then hired a 6 seater plane (Australian made airvan) with Bruce the pilot and did another wonderful scenic trip around the island. This island is really like a nature island and in stark contrast to our trip out of Hilo on the big island, very lush countryside and the most amazing canyons - flying around really does give you a good view of the whole island - flew costal for part and then up Waimea Canyon, the Wailua River and along the Na Pali Coast. Looks like some really nice resorts around the coast. The colours with the sun shining on the rocks and undergrowth was just lovely. The opposite side of the island gets 450 inches ... read more

Honolulu from 7.00a.m. til 9.30p.m. Weather just so nice high 20's with a nice breeze blowing. Seeing as we had been here before and done a lot of touristy sites decided to check out the shops, have lunch and then went out to the Factory Outlets in the late afternoon, boy! was that a bit of an adventure, caught the local bus, the express one, it took about 45 minutes to get there. Bought a few things and bused it back to the ship in time for a relaxing beer and some dinner. Was also able to get some decent WIFI and caught up on a few emails.... read more

Have had four days at sea before arriving in Hilo, (on the big island of Hawaii), has gone very quickly, weather started off coolish out of LA but has been 23-24 each day since. Ship had a passenger talent show yesterday arvo, was fantastic, there are some very talented people onboard, standing room only in the theatre, variety of singing, dancing, piano, guitar, even the captains daughter sang. Went to a few port lectures, we have this guy called Hutch onboard who gives a lecture on every upcoming port, which is so useful, usually goes for about an hour, gives a bit of history and then practical stuff like what the port is like, how far from city centre, taxis, shopping, what to see, and of course encourages to book tours with Princess but we still ... read more

LA - another lovely experience with US Customs - said they would try and make it lot smoother than New York - we had to do four different queues from 5.30a.m. - ended up getting off at 8.00a.m. (a lot of grumpy grannies!!!) Seeing we had been to LA before didn't do many tourist sites. With Jim and Rae we hightailed it to the car rental place and picked up our car and off we went, negotiating those freeways was very interesting, speed limit 65 miles/hr but we were passed like we were standing still. First to car wrecker (very dodgy part of LA, you wouldn't look sideways at some of the people) to get parts for Jim then onto Citadel Outlet Shops, bit of retail therapy, lunch at Ruby's Diner,( very interesting , were seated ... read more

Docked 5a.m. in Puntarenas, we dock at some weird times - at the end of a very long pier - overlooking dark sandy beaches - bit like Seminyak. Teamed up with Jim and Rae and hired a driver (Phillips) to take us to see some sights for a few hours - worked out very reasonable between 4 of us - $150.00 for six hours. We drove into San Jose, the capital, through lovely, green, lush countryside - we laughed a lot Phillips was a very funny man, spoke very good English but a heavy accent. Costa Rica is very big on education - 90 percent literacy rate here - not like other Central Amercian Countries - disbanded army and put money into education. In San Jose took a walking tour of Metropolitan Cathedral, National Theatre, also ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Panamá August 2nd 2013

Up bright and early this morning 5.30a.m. to see our entrance into the Panama Canal, this is one amazing engineering feat, into our first lock at 6.30a.m, the Gatun Locks. It was an all day job with us descending into the Pacific Ocean at around 4.30p.m. We went through three sets of locks of a total of 27m up into Gatun Lake ,first then onto Gamboa and passing under the Sentenial bridge, then Pedro Miguel Locks then sailing through the canal to the Miraflores locks where we were descended down 9mt and then another 17m. Lots of construction along the way as they are making another set of locks that are bigger so that they can take super ships. Our ship had only 2ft either side as we passed through the locks, it looked a lot ... read more
