Geo: 51.1752, -115.573Banff is beautiful. A small township with the Main Street just two blocks long is just the launchpad for nature's majesty. And the day was sparkling under clear blue skies and bright sunshine. It was warm! The morning served up the promised and needed sleep-in and by 10 we were out and about exploring the back yard of The Castle. The 15th hole of the golf course tees off from the ridge, across the Spray River onto the meadow below. The golfers rocked up in their buggies and with what seemed like effortless swings were launching their golf balls high into the sky and safely across the river. This 18 hole course in pristine forest shared with the local wildlife was postcard perfect. As we rounded the next corner, there it was, the Bow Falls. It ... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573The alarm did its job this morning and rattled us out of bed. Another early start in paradise and with usual efficiency the luggage was taken care of, checkout was invisible and the bus was waiting with the driver smiling and ready to deliver us to the red carpet entry of The Rocky Mountaineer for Day 2 on the train. We were farewelled by two Mounties (on horse back) who greet and farewell each train in Kamloops. The morning began with scones, a juice and a hot cuppa followed of course by the silver service dining of breakfast. We shared this with Ray and Miriam ( Ray was a recently retired doctor who provided a family practice in the same community for 65 years) and shared the excitement of our first bear sighting of the ... read more

Geo: 50.6761, -120.338The alarm was set for 5.15 am but really it was superfluous because our internal alarms had us awake on the hour at 1, 2, 3 and 4. The 1am wake up was the best because Mac was waving the torch around in the room - he was sure someone was in the room taking the luggage! He was dreaming! The 15 minute trip to the Rocky Mountaineer Station from The Fairmont took about 45 minutes because of the stops at various motels. Naively we thought this was the full complement of our fellow travellers but when we arrived at the station our mere 52 became a swarm of 600 passengers who were boarding the train! And this number leave the station every day.To welcome us aboard there was a welcome reception complete with drinks, ... read more

Geo: 49.2605, -123.114So now that I have your attention - we finished a grouse day (at Grouse Mountain and The Capilano Suspension Bridge) with the best drinks of the trip....a Brazilian - a white rum with kiwi fruit, lime and soda. This was a very late start for us with a 10 am pickup in the foyer by the appropriately named "Gray Line." It seems as if there was an overflow on the official Rocky Mountaineer Bus and fourteen of the passengers were moved to a local bus tour company. This turned out to be a bonus because we had such a small number and we had a very knowledgeable First Nations guide (Jeff) who did provide an indigenous perspective to the day. There were lots of stories and lots of lessons about Mother Earth and caring ... read more

Geo: 49.2605, -123.114Really, there should have been an alert issued today to warn the locals that we were going to be loose on the road. At the very least, we could have been advertised as a comedy duo to provide free entertainment! The bike shop was on the waterfront so we were "right there" on the Seawall and with a few quick instructions on adjusting the seat, the helmet and locking the bikes up we were on our way. Would have been handy to have any sort of instructions about the brakes and the gears ... but after a few little hiccups we had it semi sorted. As they say, "necessity is the mother of invention."The ride out to Kitsilano Beach was advertised as 22 kms with the first 8 kms as a one way very ... read more

Geo: 49.2838, -123.121Blue skies at last and it certainly brightens up all things Vancouver. We didn't start the day that way, in fact it was a predicted high of 15 so we did begin our adventures under overcast skies rugged up against the cold. The first visit was to the dizzying heights of the Vancouver Lookout for a bird's eye 360 degree view of metro downtown Vancouver, the suburbs of the Southtown ever present mountains of the north and the bustling harbour including the railway yards (they were pretty cool actually!) The glass elevator on the outside of the building whisked us to top at the rate of a second per floor ...we were there in 42 seconds and had even snapped some pics on the way.The observation deck circles around the building. There are signs to ... read more

Geo: 49.2843, -123.121The Aquabus was like a tiny little tub bobbing around in False Creek Bay as it zig zagged backwards and forwards across the inlet. It was a perfect way to see the highlights of Granville, the southern end of the Sea Wall and to give access to "another" casino. There was no rush to the start of the day and we didn't really get under way until 11 am and that gave the "workers" a chance to sort themselves out in the city before we started to get in the way. Of course, every day starts with a walk somewhere and today it was south (and our tip from the Concierge....just keep the mountains to your back because they are north). First stop was Granville Island and it was alive with school children everywhere because ... read more

Geo: 49.2605, -123.114Farewell the The Empress and the deserted marina of Saturday morning and hello to the mainland and Vancouver under grey skies. It was a repeat combination of bus, ferry, bus to get us across the Strait of Georgia, weaving by the Gulf Islands from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen. After checkout at 11 am, a smooth ride on the ferry and incessant traffic snarls on The Mainalnd the arrival time at The Fairmont in Vancouver was right on 4 pm...conveniently the guaranteed checkin time. The room was once again "Fairmont spacious" with the best beds and pillows, comfy sitting room and desk, walkin robe etc. but the view. .... hmmm ..just a little different from Victoria. Our window looks over (or should I say across and around) a collection of high rise buildings...no harbour view here ... read more

Geo: 48.4644, -123.38I wonder if the local eateries realise how good the Hop on Hop Off bus is for their business....we usually pick a venue that we see on the way. We have been spotting the Swan Inn on our rounds and so we settled on this as the brunch destination of the morning. We did call in to the Fudge Shop and Chinatown to stock up on supplies for tomorrow's ferry adventure. Our Chinatown adventure was made complete with a walk down Fan Tan Alley - the narrowest trading alley in BC. The Swan was an absolute treasure. Clam chowder to die for (@LizMcPhee!!!) and seafood prepared to perfection washed down with a locally brewed raspberry beer and a root beer - all with a view of the hustle and bustle of the entrance to the ... read more

Geo: 48.4218, -123.368We had been getting around from place to place on the red bus but today we were committed to getting a closer look at the harbour surrounds on foot. Lucky the map didn't have distances on it or we may have been daunted. Endomodo and UP keep us honest and credited us with 25 000 steps and 14 kilometres of tourist heaven. Ironically we started the day by organising some transport for upcoming events - a shuttle bus to "the" gardens and a dusk carriage ride for Friday. With those details in place it was off to Parliament. The facade of the building is magnificent and of course we have enjoyed the night time view from The Empress because the building has been outlined in some 4 500 lights - which make a distinctive daily ... read more
