Treasures in your backyard! I love your blogs, especially on the UK and its cathedrals and historic towns, so I totally think you deserve being in the Hall of Fame. Actually, I'd assumed you were already there, so I didn't nominate you--so sorry. Lincoln sounds magical with its low-key, small-town center and the Magna Carta as a bonus. Have fun on the Continent!
treasures on the doorstep Never expected to get on. It was quite an honour and a total surprise . I guess thanks to Jo and Sions bestest friend Woolly Mammoth and Bob Home and Away I got on with the help of a few more votes . I agree about the treasures on your doorstep . Lincoln was an utter delight . And on Thursday we will be back on the road heading for Italy and Croatia again .
I remember sitting on the front steps of Lincoln Cathedral one evening... listening to the choir practice, or perhaps it was Evensong. Beautiful! And congratulations on your HoF award. Keep up the great blogs.
although not religious Hello Bob thanks I didnt deserve it at all so it was wonderful to get it. Although we are not religious in the true sense of the word we love the peace and quiet and reflective nature of cathedrals. We both said Lincoln was stunning in its simplicity. Quiet peace inside and a real surprise just down the road from us . I admire those builders and wonder how they did it . You must be on the countdown now . Looking forward to hearing what you think of Croatia .
Sorry to miss you... perhaps next time. I plan to be in northern Spain either in May or September 2016 walking the Camino. Perhaps I will be ready for a lift!
I like your c-c-c-changes!!! Does that mean our paths might indeed cross in Istria? This is my itinerary in that area:
20 April: Depart Split via Krka National Park to Rakovica.
21 April: Depart Rakovica via Plitvici Lakes, arriving mid to late afternoon in Opatija where we spend the night.
22 April: Depart Opatija and overnight at Rovijna.
23 April: Depart Rovijna for two overnights at Lake Bled.
It would be great to have dinner together some evening. Let me know if this is possible and we can set a more specific time and place.
Istria Hi Bob We leave home on the 16th April and our itinerie looks a little like this at the moment We travel the 16th/17th and 18th arriving in St Pierre d'Albigny and then through to Turin for the 19th April and 20th. We then head down through Castell Arquato to Parma, Moderna and Prato leaving on the 23rd. We spend the next few days travelling around lake Bolsena down to Tarquinia before arriving at the gardens at Ninfa on the Sunday 26th. After that it is down to Naples and Paestum and the deeper South of Italy as far as Bari . We head up Italy to Venice arriving around the 4th May AFter that we have a few days around Ankaran , Krk, possibly Piran and Porec before starting the long journey home arriving at Stuttgart by the 10th May. Would have loved to have met up but I think at first glance we will still be in Italy. You will love Lake Bled - very peaceful and I am sure you will fall in love with Croatia .
The lantern This was the lantern at Ely, high up and pulled in on my camera . I never realised that it was so beautiful up there until I looked back at the photo. Just shows you take a photo and can sometimes be rather surprised at what you see. Are you settled home now after your trip?
amazing places One of our favourite places that we wish could talk might be the Gateway ARch in St Louis. Obviously not old but what a structure with all that history . Loved it
Fan vaults! Oooh, I love Cambridge, its carved stone colleges and that most amazing chapel. Since it was so expensive to enter, I stayed a whole afternoon, drinking in those most wondrous carvings. The Fitzwilliam Museum also sounds like a delight! Oh, lucky you to be cruising your fabulous isle and visiting the splendid Ely cathedral. I look forward to your blog.
fan vaulting How they did it I can never imagine. I have seen some stunning vaulting and each one makes us go Wow every time. Ely was wonderful but do you know what we went to Peterborough the next day and I dont know if it was the choir singing in readiness for Evensong but the building was absolutely perfect. We just stood and looked and couldtn take our eyes off such beauty. Our cold isle is cold today.
things to see during the holidays Yes they all look lovely .We enjoy hunting out somewhere during the winter open just to get Christmas going. So few places are open in the winter months it is nice to find somewhere like Eyam.
A 70 something who feels that the world is her lobster, that life is worth living and that you only get one shot at it . A whole new world opened up since we bought Suzy. A different view out of the window every day and the chance to see life in all its glory. And then there is Sion our travelling companion. A knowledgeable sheep who with his Sheep Book of Facts keeps us on our toes. He and his bestest, bestest friend Woolly Mammoth search the world for latrines, roofs and manhole covers. What more could you want out of life?
