9th July 2008 Woke up at 6.30 for another encounter with Eddie and Liz the bald eagles. When Eddie comes for his food it is impossible to catch him on camera without tripod and cable release so I concentrated on catching him in his favorite tree waiting for Simon to appear with his chicken. After an excellent breakfast we were ready for our next adventure a 4 hour sea kayaking trip which was also billed as a wildlife trip. We were ready at the park which is 2 minutes from Sue's place where the kayaks were laid out ready. Bob and I were going in a double kayak and Amy and Richard in single kayaks. The kayaks were all very new and smart and very well equipped with safety equipment and even had rudders to help ... read more

8th July 2008 Woke up in Pacific Sands resort, Cove Bay looking out at the Pacific Ocean on a very misty morning. After a coffee (we failed to finish rice salad for breakfast!) we delivered Richard to Surf Sisters for his lesson (Amy had run all the way!) We headed back to try and load the blog on the slowest connection ever and managed to get back just in time to see them finish up their lesson but they were so tired I didn't get a picture of them standing up on their surf boards, but lots of just falling as they were now so tired!Try not to talk about the luminous pink tea shirts which were compulsory for identification by the instructors as Richard was not amused!! I think the activity was very much enjoyed ... read more

7th July 2008 I woke early at 4.30am just as the sun was rising and without moving my head had a magnificent view over the bay. Eddie was already in his tree waiting for Simon but I didn't know that when, a few hours later, I made my way down to the deck and spotted him. He watched me very suspiciously and then decided to go further away to his fishing perch to wait with his mate as I was too unfamiliar. He will tolerate Simon going down o the deck with a chicken leg for his breakfast and Sue moving about on the window but not strangers. When Simon threw out the chicken Eddie rose up on his legs then launched off and swooped down to the rocks and grabbed the chicken in his huge ... read more

6th July 2008 This morning we checked out of the hotel around 9-15am to catch the train from Victoria to Ladysmith. When we arrived at the station we were very glad Amy had booked our tickets as the train was full , all tickets sold. It was full of two large parties of Japanese and the train only had two carriages. It left promptly at 10.00 but the guard did not seem to mind stopping at odd intervals along the way out of Victoria to pick up stragglers. It was a very scenic journey high up on the hillside overlooking lakes and thickly wooded trees. The small stations we stopped at had seen better days and most were falling down or boarded up. We pulled into Ladysmith Station, which was boarded up, at 12.15 and were met ... read more

5th July 2008 We arrived at our hotel in Seattle at 11pm last night (but for us it was 2am East Coast time) and as we were all hungry and thirsty we had to find a 24hour diner (the Hurricane Cafe), where it seems that Punk is still alive and thriving, and we were served by Goths. It was very noisy in Seattle as all over town there were fireworks exploding to celebrate independence Day (4th July). This morning we had to get up at 5-30am in time to get a taxi to the harbour to board a boat at 6-45am to go whale watching on route to Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Before we left however Amy had to go to the fitness room (before 6am) to wear out even more equipment. Mum set off to ... read more

4th July 2008 Yesterday after our trip to Peele point we were all hungry and Amy had spotted Shermans resturant almost next to the Ramada Inn where we where staying. Despite our original misgivings it turned out very well. I managed to get a roast beef dinner with a salad (bar) starter for $11-75 (less than six pounds) and also had apple crumble and ice cream. The others all manged to find soups and salads. We then returned to the Ramada where I loaded up our blogs whilst Amy wore the exercise machines out in fitness room before joining Mum and Richard in the swimming pool. This morning we enjoyed a free breakfast in the hotel before setting out for Detroit to catch our plane. We were worried about the potential traffic delays at the border ... read more

3rd July 2008 We left Guelph around 9am to go to the Ramada Inn in Leamington. This was a 3 hour drive from Guelph. The main reason was to visit Pelee Point, the secondary reason was to get us closer to Detroit from where we fly across America. Pelee Point National Park is the Southernmost point in Ontario and as we had visited the northern most point of Southern Ontario it seemed a good idea to compare the two. Pelee point is on the 42nd paralell the same as Portugal. The natural vegetation is Carolinian forest which is made up of broad leaf deciduous trees unlike the conifer forest of the north. The flora and fauna is different again. There are huge butterflies and colourful birds and lovely waterlilies on the swampy areas. The “tip” as ... read more

2nd July 2008 Up early this morning to catch the 9am boat from Tobermory to Flowerpot Island on the glass bottom Blue Heron boat. Amy and I had already done exercises on the deck as the sun came up. After egg bread for breakfast we set off and caught the boat despite Amy's delaying tactics. The boat goes out of the small harbour and into the big harbour where there are two sunken wrecks, which you can see through the glass, bottomed boat. These lakes are so large that you cannot see the other side, and they look like a sea because as far as you can see on the horizon it is just water. There are no tides of course but you can get large waves. Then we carried on to Flowerpot Island, which is ... read more

1st July 2008 Had a leisurely start this morning. Richard had to do a final clean and tidy up of the house he has been living in for the last year. We helped to clean his house and say goodbye to his neighbours. Then we left Wasaga Beach to travel to Owen Sound for lunch. We went to Harrison Park in Owen Sound. It is a delightful park set in a vally with river Sydenham flowing through. It was built by a Mr Harrison a local saw mill owner who had emigrated to Canada from Staffordshire and become a successful mill owner. He was a philanthropic employer and when work was slack in the sawmill during the depression, he got his staff to build bridges across the river Sydenham, walkways, shelters and seating in the park. ... read more

30th June 2008 After a very late night catching up on the diary while Amy and Richard tried out the first drive in movie of the season ( back at 2.00 am!) we got up quite late and then set off to see the Blue Mountain (ski resort) which is an extension of the Niagara Escarpment behind Wasaga Beach. Unfortunately it was raining so we could not even see the mountain ( I think we would call it a big hill!). So a change of plan and back to Wall-Mart for sandals and sunglasses for Bob and more clothes for Amy! We had a walk on Wasaga beach which goes for miles and was beginning to fill up with people despite the wind and drizzle ( Did they know something we did not?) Back to collect ... read more
