26th February 2008 Today we left Yungaburra to go to Cairns Airport to catch a plane to Darwin in Northern Territory. The weather was overcast and it had been forecast for showers. Whilst packing our things in the motel this morning a very large dog wandered into the room. The motel owner had never seen the dog before so he could have been a stray but was very friendly. After breakfast we paused briefly at the platypus viewing platform in the hope of catching a glimpse of these creatures but the creek was still swollen after the rain in the night making the visibility very poor. We did see some activity near the nest site but didn't actually see a platypus. It was a pleasant drive along the Gillies range of hills and down to the ... read more

25th February 2008 I need to make an amendment to yesterday's diary. The big green and black butterfly is a Cairns Birdwing Butterfly not a Queensland as I said on the photo. There were several gliding over our balcony this morning. They don't flutter like the other butterflies but swoop and soar like a small bird, hence the name. Speaking of photos I am now having to make do with a long 300 mm and a very wide angle 10-20 mm as my wonderful Sigma do everything lens has given up. It will take the odd picture but then goes into error mode so I will be taking close up far away or far away very close up!!! Should be fun. Last night we ate at the only resturant open in Yungaburra, except for a rather ... read more

24th February 2008 Today we left the Rainforest Motel in Atherston after saying goodbye to the receptionist and her roo dog Wally. A roo dog is used when they hunt kangeroos as they can sniff out the carcasses in the long grass so that the hunters can find the ones they have shot. Wally was across between a greyhound and a mastiff. Very big! We drove up to Yungaburra and had breakfast then continued up the Giles Highway towards Lake Barrine. On the way we stopped to look at the Curtain Fig which could be a 1,000 years old which is mind boggling. The fig seed is dropped by birds in the top branches of a tree and grows aerial roots which go down to the ground. Gradually over many years the fig strangles the original ... read more

23rd February 2008 We are still at Rain Forest Motel in Atherton Tablelands. The motel reception was broken into last night and when we got up this morning there were police checking out the crime scene. We went to check if our hire car had been broken into when we noticed a large stick insect on the rear wheel arch which was a work of art, he was just like a dead leaf and huge! He was at least 9 inches long. Atherton Tablelands is a bit like Derbyshire and is quite different from the rain forest jungle area we were recently in. The countryside is rolling plains of cattle country with occasional bits of rainforest in the creek areas and ranges of mountains in the distance. Today we went waterfall spotting. There are several routes ... read more

22st February 2008 When we got up this morning it had stopped raining, although it had rained most of the night, but this is what you would expect in a rainforest in the wet season. Everything was dripping and sparkling in the morning sun. We went for breakfast and looked down into Coopers Creek to watch the turtles and Black Spotted Jungle Perch swimming in the creek below us. Whilst we were having our breakfast Dinah kept rushing off to photograph the Musky Rat Kangeroos (the smallest of the kangaroo family) who were playing in the jungle just beside the restaurant. After breakfast Dinah disappeared whilst I had a second cup of coffee, I then spotted her wading up Coopers creek in an attempt to get a close up picture of the turtles we had seen ... read more

21st February 2008 When we woke this morning the sun was shining and there was not a cloud in sight. The sun made it feel much hotter but the shade temperature only rose a couple of degrees but the humidity was very high which always makes it feel much hotter. We got up early today ready to head further north to Mossman and Cape Tribulation We went past Mossman as we plan to walk up the gorge on the way back and continued on to Daintree Village. There we decided on a river cruise to see saltwater crocodiles, unfortunately the River Daintree was quite flooded as is usual for the rainy season. Crocs, like humans are not too keen on floods as it makes their shallow river bank hidaways too fast flowing and they go further ... read more

20th February 2008 Our first day for some time with no rain. We managed to book a trip to the Great Barrier Reef for today at the last minute late last night. We were picked up at our motel at 7.45 am and taken to the port to catch one of the Quicksilver company,s boats, Quicksilver Sonic, to the outer reef. The weather was forecast for showers but we started in watery sunshine on our very modern dive boat. Complimentary tea ,coffee and savoury buns and cake made a great breakfast and we spent about 1 hour 30 minutes speeding out to Agincourt Ribbon Reef which is right on the edge of the continental shelf. The clouds looked magnificent if a bit threatening over the hills on the coast. When we approached the first dive sight ... read more

19th February 2008 When we woke up in Mackay this morning it had stopped raining!!! By the time we got back from breakfast at a nice cafe we had found the night before, the sun was almost out and the temperature was rising. We also had at last found a motel with a good wireless internet connection and was able to catch up with Tom and the grandchildren in Canada and Gran and Neal at home in England. We got to the airport and caught our plane to Cairns without a hitch this time although the forecast for Cairns was not good, thunderstorms and showers. We were able to see the Great Barrier reef from the air as the plane flew up the coast and it is spectacular. Great patches of brilliant blue water where the ... read more

18th February 2008 Woke up on Long Island to more torrental rain and wind. today We left the island with regrets that we hadn't seen it at its best. However it had been a great chaance to catch up with Jo after three years and to meet Alan. We really enjoyed their company and hearing of their plans for the future. They told us all about life in Moranbah and the mine where Alan works in the office and Jo drives one of the buses which collect the miners after work and delivers them for their shifts. Jo told us about her property in Maloola which sounds idyllic and we really hope to come back and visit when they get back there in a few years time. 17th February 2008 We woke up early and for a few minutes the rain had stopped. Minutes later it was back and has been fairly steady all day, but it has remained warm at around 28 degrees. We had decided to have a cafe breakfast until we discovered it didn't open until 9.o'clock and it was only 7.30 so we bought a full breakfast in the resturant and made it last 2 hours! During a lull in the storms we went for a walk along the bush tracks from Happy Bay Long Island Resort to Palm Bay Peppers Resort. On the way we visited Fish Bay and Pandanus Bay these bays are on opposite sides of the island but this point the island is only 70 metres wide. Some of the other tracks were closed due ... read more
