6th March 2008 Woke up in Auchmithie in our bed to the most amazing sea views looking out from the North end of Bruny Island towards Hobart on the mainland. There are plenty of boats to watch coming and going and lots of sea birds. There was bright sunshine but also some dark clouds about. It was cool first thing at about 11 degrees but soon warmed up with the sun. The weather here can change rapidly and as someone told us you can have four seasons in one day. We arrived early for our boat trip from Adventure Bay, so enjoyed a cup of coffee with one of their home made muffins. People had travelled across from Hobart for the day to do this trip and by the time we were ready to go there ... read more

5th March 2008 This morning we made a very early start to get down to the Bruny Island Ferry at 9.00 clock. We met Roger and travelled over to North Bruny where Roger lead us along the unsealed track to Dennes Point where he and Peter have their holiday home “Auchmithie”. They have very kindly allowed us to stay there while we explore the island. Roger showed us where everything is kept and the little idiosyncrocies of the place, including where Quentin the quoll lives behind the wall. And maybe Percy possum in the shed! We did appreciate him taking time off to take us down and show us round. After Roger and the dogs had left to catch the ferry we set off to explore the island and go to Adventure Bay on South Island ... read more

4th Mar 2008 We set off early from Hobart to get to see Ian Sanderson in Launceston. We stoped on route for a coffee in Campletown and managed to phone Ian to tell him we were on our way. He has a splendid house set in 9 acres of land and has a long drive with some very mature and large trees in the front of his property. What struck us both was the similarity in style with the Vern and Annette's house in New Zealand. Single story plenty of space around the property and views everywhere!!! Ian took us on a whistle stop tour of Launceston which has some fine historic buildings. Launceston has a very friendly feel to it and still has plenty of independent shops in it and is like our own high ... read more

3rd March 2008 We left our hotel early and caught the train to the airport for a day flying to Hobart, capital of Tasmania. The weather was bright and sunny in Brisbane and we could see the land below during our flight. We had a brief stop in Sydney when we managed to post the blog for the previous day. Tasmania looked very brown and dry as we flew over and as we landed they had their first rain for some time. Gem and the children, Emily and Josh, met us at the airport and we went back to their house for tea. The children talked non stop updating us on everything that had happened since we saw them 3 years ago!!!! We had a lovely meal but could not use the barbecue on the new ... read more

Just a note to let you know that we are alive and well. We have been on to Bruny Island for the last two days very remote and certainly no internet connections. I have prepared the blogs but at the moment cannot find an internet connection that allows us to upload pictures at the moment. Bob and Dinah... read more

2nd March 2008 Today we woke in Darwin to the sunniest day we have seen so far in Northern Territory. We of course were flying out at midday however and had to check out of the Central Hotel by 10-30am. So after breakfast we went back to the Lamaroo Beach only a few hundred metres from the hotel for Dinah to take some more photographs of the coloured rocks on the beach. After a pleasant half an hour ( I could have stayed all day) we went back to pack and check out. We are now flying south over Mount Isa , Longreach and Rockall back to Brisbane. We can see down to the ground most of the time and there are very few roads or houses just miles of scrub land and the occasional outcrop ... read more

1st March 2008 Today we had a leisurely start to the day and after a cup of tea in the hotel went out for some breakfast. We had booked to go on another trip to see crocodiles but only a half day trip that was not starting until midday. So after breakfast we strolled down to the beach in Darwin. In the heat and humidity you have to walk slowly otherwise you get soaked very quickly and can get dehydrated. It was a grey day but not raining at the beach so Dinah spent some time photographing the coloured stones on the beach. Most of the rocks around Darwin are made of sandstone but there are a variety of minerals that stain the sandstone. They are the most beautiful purples, reds, oranges and browns, just like ... read more

29th February 2008 We have decided to have rest day and so we didn't get up until 7.00 clock. We finished the diary for 28th feb and went to have some breakfast at a nice cafe we found last night. I finished off the photos for the log and we both decided to get our hair cut. Bob went off to load the blog and we met up after we were shorn. We have booked in to the Darwin Central for our last two nights in Darwin as it is much more central than our present hotel and was reccomended by Em. We couldn't get in there for our first two nights as it was booked out. There must have been something on for those nights. While we were waiting to check in we walked around ... read more

28th February 2008 Today we awoke in the crocodile hotel for second day of our tour. It was a bright sunny morning and again it had been raining heavily in the night. We were picked up by the tour guide Peter at 8.00 clock and set out for escarpment country at Ubirr. Normally this tour wouldn't run as the water was more than 5 metres over the Arnhmen Highway. However Peter was going to take our small party of 6 to the edge of the floods where a boat was waiting to take us through the paper bark forest of Magela Creek and then to a bus waiting on the other side of the floods to take us to Ubirr. Ubirr is an outcrop of escarpment and a tribal area with more amazng rock art with ... read more

27th February 2008 Today we had to get up early to catch a coach (06-15) for a two day tour of the Kakadu National Park from Darwin. The National Park is very large the 2nd biggest in the world and covers an area the size of Wales but is also 2 hours drive from Darwin. So we spent a long time sitting on the coach to get here. It had been raining heavily in the night so once again some of the creeks were flooding across the road, which slowed us down, but as we were in a big coach so it didn't stop us. The first stop was breakfast at the Bark Hut, a very basic roadhouse which served coffee and homemade muffins. Then we went on to see aboriginal rock art at the Nourlangie ... read more
