Yet another 7am breakfast in our room at Yosemite Lodge Hotel before setting off for Bishop across the mountains. Yosemite Village is at 4,000 ft but we had to cross the mountain pass we had only recently opened at almost 10,000ft. The weather was cloudy this morning for the first time since our arrival and cooler than it had been previously. A tortuos twisty climb up into the hills with the temperature falling all the time with the altitude gained. At the highest point the temperature dropped to 27 degrees farenheit (32 degrees is freezing) and we drove through a light snowfall. The views coming out of the mountains was stunning and we passed the Mamouth Ski resorts as we lost altitude the weather cleared and the sun came and temperature slowly rose. We had a ... read more

Last full day in Yosemite Vally. This has to be the highlight of the tour for me (Bob). The scenery is breathtaking and the climbing is mind blowing. A now normal 7am breakfast before driving back into the valley to go Sentinel Dome. A spectacular granite dome above glacier point. On the way there we encountered 3 mule deer walking along the road and a bit further on we saw a large black bear run very fast across the road in front of us. No photographs though he was to fast. Unfortunately Dinah did not see him as she was in the back on the wrong side. I suppose this is the luck of the draw. She was very disappointed. It was quite cool to start the walk today because of the cooling weather and the ... read more

Another 7am breakfast and off to drive to Curry Village car park. Curry Village is the tented area, where I think Amy & Graeme stayed and met the bear. Our plan was to walk from here to Mirror Lake. The lake was very low because of the drought in California this year. We were able to walk into the lake on sand bars which would normally have been underwater. It was very green and in a wonderful scenic setting. The highlight was spotting a male Mule Deer on the edge of the lake, whose antlers were just beginning to grow. On our return to Curry Villlage we had a coffee break. As the car parks fill up quite rapidly we decided to walk back to the main Yosemite Village and leave the car in Curry Village. ... read more

Another early start, mainly to try and avoid the heat in the middle of the day. Breakfast in our rooms at 7am and off to Yosemite Village by 7-30am. The plan was to go to the visitor centre to find out if the road we needed out of Yosemite on Friday was open a (very high mountain crossing that is snowed up until this month). We arrived before 8am only to find the visitor centre did not open until 9am. So quick change of plan and went for walk to the Lower part of Yosemite Falls before it got too busy. The noise from the falls is tremendous when you get close, from the sheer volume of water and the height it is falling. Returning to the village the Visitor Centre was open and we were ... read more

Today was an early start, breakfast at 7am, checked out of the Best Western and hit the road at 7-45am. Very cloudy start this morning but still reasonably warm. Uneventful escape (except for sat nav confusion) from San Mateo this morning but then across the bay using the San Mateo bridge and causeway (5 miles long). Then up into the hills and ominous cloud. Dropping down out of the hills onto a plain the sun came out and we were soon into 75 degrees farenheit. Stopped in Livermore at Hetrz rental to extend driver insurance cover for Bob and Dinah. Then onto Oakdale for a coffee stop and refuel of the car at the amazing price of (65pence per litre equivalent) . Then swapping drivers to Bob took off for Yosemite National Park. The temperature slowly ... read more

More leisurely start today, breakfast at 8am in Hans cafe, Bob had bacon and egg on a pancake!! Which was a first and not exactly a full English breakfast, but with two pancakes substantial, the others had cereal, whimps. Checked out of the Hotel Vertigo and did scenic drive down Pacific Coast road. That is until we were stopped by Road Closed signs. We did not know this but there was a big Annual Event taking place in one of the National Parks bordering the coast road. However having circumnavigated this we ended up back on the coast road at Seal Point. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky and warm sunshine but as soon as you got out of the car the wind off the Pacific Ocean was really cold and ... read more

19thMay 2012 Early start today 7am breakfast at Tad's Cosy Cafe opposite our Hotel Vertigo. Then off by cable car up and down hills to Pier 33 to catch the boat to Alcatraz. We had not booked this trip and had not anticipated the demand for boat tickets, as it was we were lucky enough to get the last 4 tickets available that day. The weather was kind to us as the wind had dropped so the sea was calm and the sun was shining. Alcatraz is now one of the Golden Gate National Parks and a very popular visitor attraction. Although you have to book tickets to get out to the island you can return whenever you want or at least on the next available ferry. We would recommend the Audio tour of the main ... read more

Woke up early after a good sleep and had waffles for breakfast at the Ramada Inn. We were planning to go to Muir National Park to see the giant redwoods and to try out the hire car and sat nav. The sat nav proved to be a bit of a nightmare to start with as no-one could make sense of what it was telling us and by using Annette's as well we got very lost. Eventually all was sorted and we got to the park. The weather in San Fransisco had been very windy and chilly but in the shelter of the trees and inland it was lovely and we did a trail through the woods and were lucky enough to see this owl waiting to catch his lunch. We had lunch in the park cafe ... read more

20th July 2008 Had a leisurely start this morning as the children slept in until 9am. It was a very wet day however and had been raining most of the night. The good news was that it was less humid and cooler at about 20C. Entertaining the children in the house was getting a bit difficult and as soon as there was a break in the rain we took off to the park for a game of football and a go on the swings and slides. We had to make a retreat from the park when it started to rain again. This was the first day of rain we have encountered since arriving in Canada. We retreated to the house for a sandwich lunch and afterwards played some games in the garden. Early evening we decided ... read more
