Today we discovered the real Portugal. We went places where few tourists go, we wondered through the countryside on some pretty windy and very steep roads. We saw some little towns that looked extremely quiet and peaceful. We saw hundreds of acres of orange groves. We even found another vista along the way. Here is a list of the towns we saw: 1. Paderne - along the way to Alte we got lost in the town of Paderne. So we toured the cemetery which is like the ones in New Orleans. 2. Alte-a quaint little town with a river running through it and a very old cathedral. The Cathedral dates back to the 16th century. The chapels are decorated with golden leaf from the 1700's. One chapel has side walls covered with smooth surfaced tiles dating ... read more

WOW what a day. We saw some incredible sights today. Some of the best scenery of the Algarve area. We made a loop and went up into the mountains then over to the west coast then back along the south coast. A long day covering over 160 kilometers. The highlights f the day: 1. The walled city of Silves--the wall dates back to the 9th century 2. Monchique--the highest point in the Algarve region of Portugal. You can see hundreds of miles up the west coast and also along the south coast. One of the best vistas we have seen. This vista rivals the Rock of Gibraltar. 3. Sagres - the most southwestern tip of Europe, once called the end of the earth. There are two main capes here. The first one is Cabo de St. ... read more

We have spent the last two days orienting ourselves to Albufeira. It is a busy, crowded resort town similar to Cabo or Cancun. The majority of people here are English (from the United Kingdom), Irish, and German. People are quite surprised and pleased when they find out we are from the U.S. We thought we would see some real Portuguese life by going into "old town". That area was every bit as crowded as the beach area. So we decided to take the advice of a guy we met by the pool and rented a car. We will tour the coast and some inland areas in the next couple of days. After dinner, which by the way the food here is delicious. Jerry had a dish called chicken piri piri. The recipe is online. I will ... read more

Another travel day--but this one went off without a hitch. Again the key to the success of the day depended on José the taxi driver. Sure enough he showed up on time, got us to the bus station, and gave us several bits of advice. What a great guy. When we got on the bus the people behind us greeted us (in English). We had spoken with them briefly in Seville and it turns out that they were also on the cruise ship. They had several suggestions for us for Italy and also for our visit to Seville. But they talked the whole way so we didn't get to see much of the scenery. However their information was valuable and we will see the sights on the way back next week. So we are in Portugal ... read more

Our day in Ayamonte. We spent the morning trying to figure out how we would be able to get out of town the next day. We had reservations for a place in Portugal that we needed to get to on Saturday. So the first stop was the reception office for the condo we are staying at. We found out where to leave the keys in the morning (no small task with one person speaking Spanish and one person speaking English). Then she tried to help us with the bus schedule. Her information said that the bus did not stop in Ayamonte on Saturday, only Monday-Friday. Now what?!?! Next stop was to be the tourist office. They would be able to help us find a way out of town--IF they speak a little bit of English. Since ... read more

Travel days can be tedious but we prefer to look at them as an adventure full of interesting and entertaining people and places and occurrences. This day was no exception. We left Don Peque Hostel by 6:20a.m. in order to walk to the bus stop in time to catch our bus. We knew we wanted to go further than west of Seville, somewhere near the Spain/Portugal border. We have reservations for Albufeira, Portugal, for May 3 so we just needed to find a place for a couple of days. We thought about Huelva or Lepe but didn't know about the bus connections. So we will figure it out at the bus station in Seville. While traveling from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Coast we went over mountains and through farmland where there was miles and ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Nerja April 30th 2014

Our last day in this wonderful beach town. It reminds me a little of Seaside Oregon. What better way to spend the day then at the beach. I actually went swimming in the Mediterranean Sea! We have enjoyed our time here immensely. We have met many people who come here to vacation from all over the Europe. We also discovered tapas! In Spain in the evening many restaurants serve tapas when you order a glass of beer or wine. A tapa is a little plate with an appetizer size dish of your choice of a menu item. Each glass of beer equals one tapa. The thought, of course, is that after sampling a few, you will choose one and order it for dinner. But after sampling one or two at two or three different restaurants, who ... read more

We saw the most amazing sight today, it is hard to find words to describe it. But of course I will try. The Caves of Nerja are just a short bus ride east of town. We almost passed on going to see them but at breakfast another guest exhorted us to go. So off we went. What a thing to see. The caves are an impressive array of stalactites and stalagmites. The caverns are huge and ramble deep into the mountain, up and down 400 stairs. At the end is the Hall of the Cataclysm where you circle the world's largest stalactite, verified by the Guiness Book of World Records. The public area represents only a third of the entire cave. The history of the caves and some additional photos are on line at www.cuevadenerja.es We ... read more

One of the sights of Nerja is the Balcony of Europe. It is a bluff that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. A castle and later a fort occupied this spot from the 9th century until the earthquake of 1884. Now it is a pedestrian friendly view terrace. And what a view it is. You can see miles of the Mediterranean Sea coastline and many little coves and caves below. The tide change here is minimal--only a two feet change during a 24 hour period. On the Balcony there is a cute statue of King Alfonso XII. This commemorates when he came to Nerja after the devastating earthquake and mobilized the locals to put the community back together. Standing on this spot amid the ruins he marveled at the view and gave it its name Balcony ... read more

We are a very long way from home. We disembarked the ship after traveling 4080 knotical miles. We are in a time zone that is 9 hours ahead of Brookings time. And now we are in Nerja Spain. We were in the first group off the ship-that meant up at 5:30, finished with breakfast, and in the taxi by 7 a.m.! I guess the cruise is over! We managed to get to the correct bus station, buy the correct tickets, get on the correct bus, get off the bus in the correct town, and find our way to the correct motel. So far so good. We wii be staying in the town of Nerja, Spain, for the next three or four days. We are in a quaint hostel right downtown. We have a room with a ... read more
