Revisiting Bweranyange Girls Secondary School (BGSS), one of my favorite places from 2008 was heartwarming and eye opening. Highlights 1.) Another lovely breakfast with Carsten at the Kayanga Hotel with condolences over Germany losing the World Cup to Spain. 2.) Visited the Jubilee Site where the ELCT just celebrated their 100 years in Karagwe; 3.) Visited Bweranyange Girls School (BGSS) that has expanded from 120 girls in 2008 to 323 in 2010!; 4.) Girls sang and danced for us in an assembly; 5.) Met with teachers and Assistant Headmaster at BGSS and shared fun at Maya Point. NARRATIVE: Sam picked us up shortly after 7:00am, picked up Sister Regina and stopped by the Jubilee site. I remember Sr. Regina from 2008 when she would be walking on the road between familes she would visit and our ... read more

Favorite Day!Highlights are: (1) Energetic comparative history lesson from Carsten (fellow guest from Denmark at Kayanga Hotel); (2) Met Rev. Dr. Katabaro and toured KARUCO's 1,000 acre site with him; (3) Analyzed land development for the university; (4) Toured Kayanga with our friend, Sam Kayongo, the Community Development Officer. NARRATIVE: Carston helped us with another perspective regarding Uganda and Tanzania. He has worked here for years and years so is familiar and knowledgeable. He shared with us what he knew about clan fighting in Kampala and how that keeps people in poverty there. He also shared his experiences with corruption especially in Nairobi and parts of Kenya and told of needing body guards at some points. Brighton Katabaro and Rev. Ngambeki picked us up in the parking area of the hotel and got on our way ... read more

Oh to wake up to the sunrise in Kayanga, Karagwe, Tanzania. The five highlights of the day are: (1) Sunrise in Kayanga and breakfast of toast and egg; (2) Dr. Patrick shows us how many lives are in one man's hands; (3) Malaria counts for 56% of all deaths - down 30% from 2006; (4) Walk around Kayanga; (5) Rebecca Reunited. NARRATIVE: Nothing in the world tastes as good as Tanzanian coffee in the morning. Especially when the taste is accompanied by the sights, sounds and smells of Kayanga. Steve befriended a little boy whom we learned is "Von". Steve has always had a way with little ones and Von was no different although he did take quite a gaze into those blue eyes Steve has. We got our schedule last night and learned we are ... read more

Day 5 Highlights: (1.) Beautiful sunrise in Kampala. Sunrises around the world unite us; (2.) Loved riding to Mutukula (Uganda/Tanzania border) with Ben our trusty driver and Carsten, our new friend from Denmark. Watching Steve 'see Africa' for the first time is something I will not forget; (3.) Reunited in Kayanga with old friends at the ELCT (Evangelical Lutheran Church of TZ) Headquarters - Vincent, Treasurer George. My heart melted when I saw Edina! Genegeva!; (4.) Walked around Kayanga with Steve. Hello red dirt roads! Hello crowded shops! Hello smells teasing of food and then compost! Hello stares for Wazungu! Karibu sana Steve! This is Kayanga!; (5.) Our friends gave us a warm welcome reception with Bishop, Rev. Ngambeki, Venant and Carsten. Ahh, Edina's cooking at the Kayanga Hotel. We are officially "here". NARRATIVE: Ahh - ... read more

The five main highlights are listed here first. Please read the narrative if you have time. 1. Picked up Eliana and Lee (from Duke University doing internships in Finance), then John, then Maria in our African 'pick everyone up' mode as we headed one hour north of Kampala for the celebration at the Ndere seminary. 2. Arrived at Ndere Seminary's 10 Year Celebration. Charles and Maria (and hence we) were treated as special guests: VIPs in the front row. The bishop is Maria's uncle and Charles serves as a trustee. 3. The rector invited the Americans to sing our National Anthem to the bishop and the crowd of about 200. Oh dear. Charles said that if we had refused he would have told President Obama to revoke our passports. Steve led and no lives were lost; ... read more

This blog lists highlighted bullet points first. You are invited to read on if you have time. 1. Short night. Not a lot of sleep on the 7.5 hour MSP-AMS flight. 2. 4-hour layover in Amsterdam. Steve is exhausted and sleeping on a bench. Rehydrating with apple juice and vitamin water. (He just returned from a solar project in Switzerland just the week before we left for Africa.) 3. A cheerful KLM attendant invited us to upgrade to business class. Recliner, footrest, sleep, sleep, sleep. Ignore previous comments about steerage. 4. Excited to see friends Charles (St. Thomas grad) and wife, Maria in Kampala. 5. Customs was easy. Waited for bags a very long time. But we go with the flow. 6. Greeted Charles!! Loved seeing his face. Charles is a blog in and of himself. ... read more

This blog lists 5 highlighted bullet points first. You are invited to read on if you have time.1. Been packed for two days. Have everything needed for 2 and 1/2 weeks. 2. Tying up communication with family and friends. Loved ones want to know... 3. Tying up loose ends with the basement. Somehow it needed to flood a few days ago. 4. What is in store for us? Hope unfolding for Bweranyange Girls' School and KARUCO - Karagwe University College. 5. Can't wait to see old friends, and get to know many others. NARRATIVE: Did a 'test' pack of two check-in and two carry on bags plus each of us with a briefcase or backpack. I generally travel über light so this is ridiculous. How can Americans carry so much stuff!! We have gifts for many. ... read more

Safari njema urudi salama. This is the day to say farewell to Africa. Hard to believe it was our last breakfast in Kayanga. Lots of final farewells. After George loaded the truck with everything, Edina rode with us for a while. Our team watched her walk away. I am confident I will see her again although I feel the vacuum of her presence. Lunch at a highway take-away. We all ate off of the menu except George and Andrew who had buffet. Andrew told us later he had made an error with that. George had to produce various licenses at the border but we got through in good shape. In Uganda, George showed us Lake Victoria which felt a tad hot and buggy. Some local folks were swimming and I couldn't help but wonder about water ... read more

We woke to rain. Shucks. Had breakfast in Andrew's room since there was a conference in the main hall. A couple of the guys were out late and didn't join us. More shopping and taking photos. Lunch in Andrew's room. Packed. Drums will make it safely. Rebecca killed one of the chickens for our dinner. Andrew had been listening to the chicken for weeks and said, "Justice is served". Vincent arrived at the hotel, dressed up and having walked about 7 miles to see us. He gave us a card in English and wrote some beautiful things. He gave each of us a rose and said, "The gift is small but from the bottom of my heart". I was very touched by his sincerity and teared up. He is such a good guy. I will miss ... read more
