The Hon Kjell Bergh (Consul Tanzania) and I were escorted by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) Karagwe Diocese General Secretary, Mr. Erasto Kamihanda who showed us the place reserved for us--a table under one of the tents. We sat, got a program in Swahili from Brighton, and just took in the sights and sounds. I am glad to have had this experience with Kjell- he is in his element with official and ceremonial tasks and is calm company. He is also ever mindful of the presence and mindsets of politicians and is diligent at encouraging them to do more. My style is informal so I had to deal with my discomfort, trepidation about making mistakes and reminded myself to not take myself too seriously. Either of us could have done it solo, but together ... read more

It was an amazing day – the beginning of the future. Groundbreaking was so well organized and so festive. The Honorable Kjell Bergh, Consul to Tanzania, USA and I had breakfast at 8:00, were joined by Rev. Dr. Brighton Juel Katabaro, Coordinator for KARUCO, then were taken to the KARUCO site with Rev. Dr. Benson Bagonza, Bishop and Founder of KARUCO, at 9:00. The Chinese workers are hard at work on the road although it is still under construction and deeply rutted. We entered KARASECO (Karagwe Secondary School) and on to the adjacent KARUCO via a new road--not even built on my last visit to the site in 2010. We headed to the groundbreaking site where the new administration and classroom buildings were already under construction and the laborers hard at work. We arrived at the ... read more

Sad to leave. Excited to go. Highlights today are: 1) Early breakfast and more good-byes; 2) Uganda border; 3) Driver Ben brought us to the Botanical Garden at Entebbe; 4) Waiting at Entebbe; 5) Headed Home. NARRATIVE: 5:30am. Up and at 'em. Showers then breakfast. Dustin arrived right on time. It has been so peaceful riding with him, listening to music, venturing into conversation with exaggerated hand gestures and little common language. Edina and her staff insisted on carrying our luggage. All circled around us and said goodbye. Drove away from the red dust streets, the shops, the city compost pile, our colleagues, our friends - Bye Kayanga. Arrived at Mutukula at 9:00am. Breezed through the offices shrugging off those cutting in line until Steve decided he had had enough. One guy stepped in front of ... read more

For the first time in my life I was in a place, the interior of Karagwe - Kyerwa - where there was absolutely no source of light. Pitch black. Utter darkness. Could not see my hand in front of my face. More about that later. For now, the highlights of the day include: 1) Sat on the "back porch" enjoying the morning while Edina managed her hotel staff; 2) Rode with Dustin to Mabira in the interior of Karagwe; 3) A highlight of my life was the women of Mbira greeting us with their singing and dancing; 4) Stayed at the ELCT Compound at Kyerwa with Elsie, Pastor Godfrey, and Frederick; and 5) to bed in utter darkness. NARRATIVE: Every morning we awaken mutliple times with the sounds of wild dogs barking, hotel workers shouting to ... read more

Everywhere we go, we are mindful to ask: What are the strengths here? Weaknesses? Ideas for the future? I have not blogged about it much, but our purpose in Karagwe to assess needs and determine if there is a way we could collaborate on meeting the needs of the people of Karagwe. We have a separate report (way beyond blogging) that focuses on the Karagwe Needs Assessment. Email educatetanzania@gmail.comif interested in that. Today's highlights include: 1) Being the object of local attention in the crowded bank lobby; 2) Assessing needs through on-site visit and interviews with AIDS Control Program (ACP) led by Venant; 3) Lunching with Pastor Joaquin; 4) Ambling through the 'burbs' of Kayanga; 5) Enjoying a pop and water at a bar patio. NARRATIVE: I love our coffees and breakfasts in Kayanga. Toast, omelettes, ... read more

NARRATIVE: Love these services. Sat with the bishop up front on special chairs. The bishop gave time to introduce us and say a little bit. Edina II, wait staff at the hotel, had written out my greeting in Swahili for me. Tuna wasa limu katika join a la Yesu Kukota USA. We greet you from the USA in the Name of Jesus. Shy of my pronounciation, the bishop turned to me and said "You got it!" People liked that. I thanked folks for including us and that we look forward to helping them with ... read more

Carsten came to work with Venant and the AIDS project with the ELCT. he was lookimg forward to meeting his wife and taking a holiday on the beach side of Tanzania. We said good-bye. How did we eat eight times in one day? Highlights today are: 1) Rode with our quiet and trusty driver, Dustin, to Kamihanda's house en route to Bweranyange. Rural with kind people and harvested coffee beans lying on the ground in the sun; 2) Ate eight times. 3) Visited Bweranyange Girls School again and visited classrooms; 4) Toured local homes with Pastor Jackson, my dear friend from 2008; 5) Jackson gave us a lovely handmade gift and said "good-bye". NARRATIVE: 'Slightly full' from the two breakfasts, lunch, four snacks and dinner. Thankfully, some of the snacks were just ground nuts and sodas but we wanted to eat at each person's home to affirm the honor it was to be invited into their homes to experience real local graciousness and hospitality. Pastor Jackson was intent on introducing ... read more
