1. Engineers plan to level with administrators at KARASECO. 2. George said he told that we were afraid of the dogs so they took care of them. Ohh. 3. Engineers gave Vincent a toolbox and he loved it. Was very grateful. 4. Rode to KARASECO and told Mr. Kabalimu the pasteurizer would not work. 5. Reaction was accepting. He asked the engineers to tell the school. 6. Our team stood on the porch of the school while all 500+ listened. 7. Headmaster Kabalimu said 'Water is Life'. My intro built on that. 8. Introduced team, then introduced Ann to teach the lesson we created. 9. She showed the vials of before and after pasteurization so showed dirty and clean. 10. Andrew then took over and delivered a jazzed up improvisational lesson. 11. Ended by telling them ... read more

Summary: I had dreaded disappointing the Africans with the truth about the pasteurizer- that it would not work. I hated disappointing those who had helped, those who worked on site at the schools, those involved on the fringe, those who simply hoped for clean water. But the truth is always the best way. Our team was supported by George and Vincent and by the administrators at Bweranyange. What could have been a situation made even uglier by resentment from those wronged (and who would blame them?) became a portal of mercy by those who reached out in forgiveness and affirmation. It was a loving and affirming time. Leveling With George and Vincent. Ann led the team in telling George and Vincent that the pasteurizer did not work. They took the news well but were very serious. ... read more

Summary: Picked up dresses at shops, met George's lovely wife, Eunice who is a school inspector, and enjoyed our meals. With the solar pasteurizers built, it was pasteurizer testing day at KARASECO.This is it! Exciting. Let the testing begin! After lunch we waited four hours to greet President Kikwete who passed through Karagwe. Pasteurizer Testing The engineers assembled and mounted the solar panel and began the testing procedure. The valve would not stop leaking which frustrated the engineers. After tea, they tested some more and the valve continued to leak. I am no engineer but this does not seem good. They talked of the obvious problems with even the tiniest leak with something like a water pasteurizer. I hope they can work it out. Meanwhile Ann stayed in the sun too long and burned her hands ... read more

Summary:The Imam woke us as usual for early morning prayers. Reminds me to connect with God and do the same. Plus once the noise begins, there is no hope for sleep. After the Imam, there are birds, and then the 'start of the day' with people bustling and beginning to do what they do. I love it here but admit to looking forward to returning home in 6 days. We are headed to Bweranyange today and I am excited to see if Headmistress Sophia can meet with me about the needs assessment. President Kikwete, President of Tanzania, was supposed to meet with the bishop today but could not. Picked up Sam enroute to Bweranyange and had a nice talk with him on the way. He has a good vision for development in Karagwe and hopes for ... read more

George, our driver and cultural liaison had suggested that the engineers allow the local crew to finish the tower at KARASECO and that we have a 'day off'. The team agreed so we had a late breakfast, shopping and exploring Kayanga. Breakfast at 9:00 - what a treat to sleep in. Shopped in Kayanga for gifts: Drums for my sons, Jordan and Erik. Apart from having good sound they were so beautiful to look at and feel. The shop clerk and I had some language difficulties but no problems whatsoever when it came to agreeing on money. Was embarrassed when the clerk ran with me through the rain to the hotel to deliver the drums. Bought Tanica Coffee, a 3-legged stool with African images carved into the leather, some carved rocks for my mom, and a ... read more

Not only this day's highlight but one of the trip's highlights was the visit to the point at Bweranyange to overlook the Kagera River and Rwanda. My goodness, it was beautiful. So highlights of the day were 1) Talked with engineers who were excited about teaming up to do something Education/Engineering to sustain our involvement in Karagwe; 2) Visited a vista point just north of Bweranyange Girls Secondary School; 3) Solar Build Update. NARRATIVE: The dog pack had a stand off last night with growling and intermittent barks. Edina has been ill so was not her usually chatty self during breakfast. It was decided that Andrew would stay back with Ann. Raining out and kind of chilly. Stopped for caulk but store was closed and on we went to Bweranyange. My ears still ring with the ... read more

This is the first day of the second half of our program in Karagwe. Highlights of the day are: 1) Raining buckets; (2) Ann is sick and she I stay back from the build; (3) Visited Nyakahanga Hospital to check Ann. The chief of staff was at the Kayanga Hotel and insisted we bring Ann to the hospital, which is owned and operated by the ELCT. Our driver approached the hospital and we entered the gates which were opened for us. I was deeply saddened by all the people waiting outside the gates and wondered if they would be cared for in a timely way. Our driver escorted us through the hallways, past the moms and babies, pregnant people, elderly people - all on benches waiting to see a doctor. The driver let us in to ... read more

Today's highlights were church and the church auction; and then some tough team problem solving about the pasteurizers. Church at 10:00AM and over at 2:15PM. Jason, Kaye and I went to the church right behind the hotel while Andrew, Andre, Tom and Ann went to the Catholic Church. People piled in - men on one side, women on the other. Jason stayed with us with no self-consciousness. Beautiful - I mean BEAUTIFUL clothing. I so appreciate the style, the blouses and skirts that match or complement. Is this the root of the beautiful clothing I see in some urban churches? Wonderful music and each song started with a techno-beat. A woman and two young girls sat next to me. The girl in the orange taffeta said "pree-ty" and then spit on the girl in the white ... read more

Rebecca's face look disappointed when Kaye told her last night we would need breakfast at 7:00. Normal breakfast then George and Vincent came early. Arrived on site at KARASECO and aggregate was not delivered yet. Watched the workers compact the soil. Ann shoveled sand while the hired local workers stood by. This must have been quite a sight for them. On the one hand we have a new picture of female work, and on the other we have a challenge to control. Half the school is now watching - ok- maybe the whole school. Some are in uniform. Kaye and George go into town to purchase aggregate. The engineering students and I sat under a tree and discussed tanks, pumps, the solar build, the project and life in general. Andrew started a reflection time and it ... read more
