Santa Teresa... We only stayed in Santa Teresa for one night, but there were two main highlights for me, number one being the ocean view that I woke up to in the morning, and number two, taking a yoga class in front of said view. We had left Playa Grande four hours behind us by car; our friend Hector had driven us down the Pacific Coast to reach our destination. It's always fun getting to know a local as they share their pride in their country...well that may depend which country you are in. Three quarters of the way into the drive, we stopped at a local "soda" (cafe) for some lunch. I had the most delicious home made tortilla with avocado and egg. It tasted of pure fresh maize and this memorable meal cost me ... read more

To the beach! After much deliberation of East vs West, we decided to go West! In search of sunnier skies and nature’s beauty, we called our new friend Alberto and asked him to drive us to Playa Grande, about three and a half hours from La Fortuna. Along the journey, the landscape and climate changed dramatically. As soon as we drove over the crest of a hill and towards the coast, the land became dry and arid, bright sunshine and blue skies; such a contrast. I enjoyed conversing with Alberto and practising my Spanish. We arrived at Hotel El Manglar in the Palm Beach Estates of Guanacaste. Guanacaste ... read more

Welcome to Costa Rica Late at night, upon arrival at San Jose airport I had my first taste of Español (Spanish) at the immigration counter as the officer wished me a lovely trip! I figured I was off to a good start as I understood her at least. My UK travel buddy Fiona had waited for me at the airport and we traveled to the hotel together, where another UK travel buddy was waiting! Over-excited by the holiday ahead of us and the availability of a hot tub we jumped right in and proceeded to catch up on life in the jacuzzi for an hour! Much needed sleep then followed! Sunday 9th May Costa Rican adventures officially began on Sunday morning with a traditional breakfast of ‘pico de gallo’ (literally "rooster's beak"…thankfully only in the literal ... read more

Not quite a ludicrous as the title suggests, but not far off. May 2015, and a grand adventure awaited! Two lovely friends of mine were getting married in the Catskills, upstate New York at the end of May, so as well as this being a wonderful thing, it was also a great time to create an adventure. Whilst on that side of the world, it would have been rude not to. (Catskills blog to follow soon). The main criteria for adventure were Spanish speaking, and easy access for the three of us reuniting from London and Hong Kong. En route to Costa Rican jungles and beaches, I stopped off in New York with the gorgous bride to be! After a sixteen hour flight, I got a train to Penn Station and emerged into Madison square feeling delighted, ... read more

Six months ago, I wrote about the first half of my year, and my aim of setting a new resolution each month. As 2014 comes to a close, I wanted to reflect on the latter end of the year, and the resolutions it entailed. Basically, at the beginning of the year I decided I would soon forget any new years reolution, so instead I created one every month. It only had to last for 30/31 days! The blog on the first six months can be found in the link below: https://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Hong-Kong/Hong-Kong-Island/blog-847723.html So....August I tried something new called oil pulling - using coconut oil. I tried to do it once a day and felt the benefits. Looking back, it's something that didn't turn into a habit, but I'd like to do it again. Have a google for ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan October 2nd 2014

I'm lucky enough to have travelled extensively in Asia, and Myanmar has been on my wishlist for many years, in particular Bagan. All I can say is it was well worth the wait... A one hour propeller plane flight from Yangon took us to Bagan, a very flat, green landscape with the most wonderful skyline. Within half an hour of landing, I was driving to the hotel and already seeing hundreds of pagodas peeking up above the trees. I would liken it to being in a National Park, where you are surrounded by a particular type of scenery - in this case, pagodas. I knew there were lots of them, but the number astounded me, along with how close to them I was. After checking in at the gorgeous Tharabar Gate Hotel, named after an ancient ... read more

Yangon (Rangoon) My most recent trip was thanks to two consecutive public holidays in Hong Kong. I love a good public holiday, and it’s always a good excuse to squeeze in some travel! This time it took me to a place that had been on my radar for a long time, and finally I was able to make it a reality! For a while, it was off limits due to political unrest, but thankfully the doors to Myanmar are open and I gladly entered. My visa had been sorted in Hong Kong, and off I flew to Yangon, about three hours by plane. Before I go into Yangon details, there were a few general things I noticed whilst in Myanmar. A love of stickers – within a day, I had stickers for park entries, stickers for ... read more

Abergavenny If you’ve followed my blogs this year, you will have noticed that I went to New York in April. Before I go away I often do research on websites such as Tripadvisor. One of my favourite tripadvisor emails I received this year, was the one entitled “New York and Abergavenny are recommended for you”. Yes, I’d been researching both, but both are quite radically different! Different but equally valid destinations! Abergavenny provided me with a lovely holiday from a holiday! I wanted to spend some time with my Dad, and with the distractions and demands of being in London, we decided to head out on a road trip and my wishlist for the trip consisted of ‘green open space’. A three to four hour drive from London, crossing the river Severn took us into Wales ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island July 31st 2014

So it's now August...I know; how and when did that happen? I want to go back a few months to January 1st 2014, and to new years resolutions. It's a while ago I know, but did you make any resolutions? Can you remember them? I'm sure many people go the distance and last 365 days, but for many of us, resolutions are a distant memory by February. This year I decided to do something different, and I thought I would share it with you. I realised that every year I made a "new years resolution" that was not that meaningful, and I would lose motivation to maintain whatever it was, or I had made it so generic that I could convince myself it was impossible not to achieve it! Here is what I am doing this ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island » Stanley July 21st 2014

Seven years in Hong Kong, and you think you’ve done most things there are to do. Thankfully I still manage to surprise myself and discover more. Monday, that tricky day of the week when there’s a lot to do and it’s back to work after the weekend. Monday night is often one of those go to the gym, healthy dinner, early night kind of days. This particular Monday I was offered the chance to do something quite different. I left my desk at 6pm, raced home to change, and by 7pm I was in a taxi to the start of “The Twins” hike. Five of us began hiking in the dusk, heading up over the first hill towards the beach town called Stanley. It was quite a surreal turnaround. “The twins” are a popular hiking route ... read more
