One plane away… So 2016 ended and 2017 began. Was a strange one for me as I had to say goodbye to my Australian friends in Sydney. Through no choice of my own, but the legalities of a visa (it was about to expire) - it was time to move on. It seems such a big deal and a big process but the reality hits pretty quickly when you board a plane and exit a plane and that is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. In the space of eight hours I had left Australia behind and was embarking on the next step. Travel is a wonderful thing but it also tears you away from, and pulls you into new things all the time! I was super sad to be leaving Australia ... read more

Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon on a Mulgas Tour... I never knew that so much of nothing could create so much of something…Introducing the Australian Outback. As with many travels, sometimes we don’t know what to expect, or just don’t have great expectations of what’s to come. Personally, this trip basically came about because I had a few options on the table and went for the cheapest/most convenient flights that suited me! There’s so much to see in Australia I wasn’t short of options! So, I knew that thousands of people visited Uluru every single day and went to find out what the fuss was about and to delve a little deeper into Australia. Perhaps it makes me... read more

Moving Countries... Going on holiday is one thing - packing your bags, having an adventure and returning home to the people you love and the life that you know. Going travelling is another - perhaps quitting your job and packing your life into a backpack for a wonderful adrenaline-fuelled trip around the world, before winding up back with those home comforts again. Moving countries is little different. There is a bigger gamble, a bigger uncertainty and a bigger risk. That said, there could also be a bigger gain! Moving countries - Yes you still have to pack your life into a bag, but this time you can’t leave any of it behind for safekeeping. Yes you have to quit your job, but then you have to find another one, in another country. Ultimately, you don’t know ... read more

Delhi in a Day If I am truly honest, anywhere that I went after spending time in Ladakh and the Rumbak Valley, was going to have a lot to contend with. Landing into Delhi with mountain withdrawals was not ideal and I couldn’t get myself to gel with this 20 million population city. I only had a day and was on a quick tour of the city with a guide and an air conditioned van, so it was not quite an authentic experience. I fully appreciate I didn't have a long time to give Delhi a chance! First up on our tour, we visited the Qutb Minar Stone Tower, which was quite a large place and very popular with the local tourists. Lots of stone carvings and pretty surroundings. Our very enthusiastic guide shared with us ... read more

Rumbak Valley - Ladhaki Loving From Leh, we drove one hour to the entrance of Hemis National Park, Ladakh. From the beginning of the Rumbak Valley, we began a hike towards our new home for five nights. About ten mules were transporting our belongings plus camping equipment as we hiked ahead into the valley. Embarrassingly the mules overtook us, and were clearly better acclimatized! Once at camp, we erected tents in the most stunning location I think I have ever camped. Before nightfall arrived, we hiked up a short but steep hill nearby to observe the surrounding jagged mountains, and to look for snow leopards…no easy task! The Rumbak Valley is considered the capital city of Snow Leopards, but has no real significance when there are only about nine of them roaming around this whole area! ... read more

Possibly the luckiest traveller in the world this year! I was the plus one on a competition prize to India! Not only do I love to travel, I love it even more when it doesn’t cost me anything! A dream come true! In early November, my friend Leisa and I flew from Hong Kong to Delhi, with a transfer to Leh, in the North of India, Ladakh - Kashmir. If I am honest, I did not know that this beautiful place had existed up until this point! Flying into Leh at 3500 meters altitude, there was not much of a descent but there was one hell of a view over the Himalayas. Plunging to minus two on landing, we collected our bags from the single conveyor belt at the baron airport arrivals and were met by ... read more

I was on my way to a stunning countryside getaway in upstate New York - somewhere I may not have had the chance to experience had I not been invited to a gorgeous wedding in the Catskills! After a whirlwind 24 hours in New York City, I was on a bus heading to Hunter in the Catskills - the bus station was full of people heading out of town in multiple directions; clearly a very popular thing to do on the weekend. After about forty five minutes I was already gazing out at evergreens and rolling hills. Upon arrival at Hunter, it was time to slow down to country living pace! Feeling small in a big city is very different to feeling small in the wilderness! I think I prefer the latter. We took a short ... read more

This blog is so terribly late it's embarrassing but I still wanted to share my photos of this city that captures me. On my second visit, it was nice to be less of a hurried tourist and more of a wanderer (and a shopper). Strolling along the streets of New York with your best friend - especially after twelve wonderful nights in Costa Rica - the movies are not too far from the truth. With cocktails at the Top of the Standard, the hilarious cab driver, the coffee in hand, pizza in the park - what a glorious few days we had! Just sharing my photos and smiling at the memories this time round, JHG... read more

Los Últimos días.. Following our speedboat to Jaco, a we were driven two hours south to Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio. Upon arrival we headed straight to the beach for a seafood platter, why not! It was a long beach, and once we had found a spot away from the slightly concerning crocodile warning signs, we were happy chilling out and playing in the immense waves. Big kids at heart, it's awesome how much fun the ocean can be! Manuel Antonio has an odd layout because right by the park entrance there are shops and restaurants, which we were told were overpriced and more for convenience. The majority of good eateries and amenities such as ATMs or shops were on "the road to Quepos". We only went to Quepos itself to purchase bus tickets, but other than ... read more

Love the Sea... In my previous blog entry, I left us in Santa Teresa, on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. This entry takes us further South down that same coast to the 'Amor del Mar' hotel in Montezuma. We took a taxi from Santa Teresa to Montezuma which was not a very long drive, and only cost about $30 USD. It provided me with yet another opportunity to make friends with the driver and practice my Spanish. These are the best ways to practice because there is no time pressure - you have all that road ahead of you, and more often than not, these drivers are proud of their country and happy to have a foreigner willing to converse in their native language! I like to think it's win-win for both of us! The ... read more
