"The better part of one's life consists of his friendships" Abraham Lincoln I felt like I was waiting for months for Annalies and Kristen to come visit. Honestly, since we planned the visit last year, it was months and months! Finally, October 2nd arrived, and I got to greet both of them in the airport. I was so excited for our weekend together We got to see and do so much together..let's see, where to start? Well, after showing them around our house, we went out to Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison. Dinosaur Ridge Trail is a 1.5mile trail that has hundreds of dinosaur tracks, some dinosaur bones and there's a pretty view of the foothills and Red Rocks (Kristen was excited when I told her that's where Warped Tour played this year). The dinosaur tracks were ... read more

The Great American Beer Fest - Beer heaven... beer haven... Over 2,000 different beers - most on tap, some bottled, all available for our tasting pleasure :) According to the Guinness Book of World Records, there is no other place on earth where a beer aficionado can find more beers on tap. This annual event allows people - over 49,000 this year - to sample more than 2,000 different beers from all over the country, from large and small breweries alike. Tons of wonderful beer to taste...sign me up! I first heard about this event on the radio and immediately knew I just HAD to check it out. Tickets are only $55, but they sell out fast, so you need to get them as soon as you can. I went on Thursday night, which was opening ... read more

North America September 15th 2009

Haven't road-tripped anywhere lately, so after I worked all weekend as manager on duty, I had to get away for a couple of days. I couldn't decide whether to head north east towards the dakotas and Mount Rushmore, or to head south towards New Mexico. I kicked both ideas around in my head, but something was pulling me south. So Monday morning I drove the 6 hours south to Taos. I've never been down to New Mexico before and I think I was expecting desert and sand. Taos is almost at 7000 ft, and is nestled in the Sangre de Christo Mountains. It was pretty chilly, and the trees all around me suprised me. It was a pretty area, though, and I soon got used to the forested area. The town itself is smaller than I ... read more

Mom, Dad and Brett all came to visit for four days-- this is the first time they've all come to visit at once, and we got to see some great sights. The first day, we drove down past Colorado Springs to Royal Gorge Bridge in Canon City. I made the mistake of saying it wasn't too far from Colorado Springs, which for some reason I really thought was true, but it was actually an hour past Colorado Springs, so almost 3 hours one way... a bit more than we really wanted. Dad says he remembers visiting here when he was a kid with his family, but I bet it's changed a lot since then! Today, they market themselves as "Royal Gorge Bridge and Park - Colorado's Natural Wonder" but most of the stuff there had little ... read more

Just thought I'd post some pics of our new place... but I hope you all come visit soon and see for yourselves :) Not in pics: We have a third bedroom downstairs that we use as our office / guest bedroom - I would have taken a pic, but we've got friends staying in it now..it's not too exciting, anyways. There's also a furnished basement. ... read more

"We're gonna Hava-Supa Time" read the forum post from one of the guys...and once I read that, I knew it was going to be true! It all started when I read a message on Couchsurfing.org about a trip a guy in Arizona was planning to the Grand Canyon. It was the pictures that grabbed my attention, and as I read more about the trip, I was hooked. Couchsurfing.org is a website that makes connections between travelers and local people in the communities they visit. It's a great idea-- if you know you are going to a specific place, you can look up the couchsurfers who are in the area, and you can see if anyone is available to meet you for coffee or dinner, or if anyone has any fun plans going on, and even if ... read more

When I first heard about the Great Sand Dunes National Park, of course I wanted to check it out. Who wouldn't? The largest sand dunes in North America, they rise over 750 feet above the valley. They lie against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. They're at an elevation of 8200 feet. For once Beth and I actually had two of the same couple of days off, and since that never happens, we were super happy to go camping. It was a four hour drive down to the Sand Dunes, which are located in the southern part of Colorado. We left after work on Sunday night, but after construction and accidents on the highway, we didn't get to the dunes until after 9pm. Since there's only two campsites in the dunes and you can't make reservations in ... read more

Brett came to visit for a couple of days-- I convinced him (ie guilted him into it) because first, it was my birthday, second, since he's now job hunting, I was afraid it would be one of the last times he'd be able to come out on short notice, and lastly (and probably most importantly for him) because I paid for his ticket. He's never been camping before, something most of my friends seem to find incredible. I've always loved camping and being outdoors, and thought it was time he tried it out. Memorial Day Weekend sounded like the perfect time. I had to work Saturday and Sunday, but had Monday and Tuesday off. I figured that would be better - less campers. It seems like everyone in the state likes to start their camping season ... read more

John Wayne once famously said that Moab is "where God put the West" and I'll agree with that! I had a couple of days off work, and decided to go west. Since the weather has been decent in the mountains, I was able to take I-70 from home to Grand Junction ( a town on the west side of the Rockies), and onward to Moab, Utah. Grand Junction is the home of the Colorado National Monument, which I must confess I had never even heard of until I got within 5 miles of it. Of course, I couldn't pass by without checking it out. It was established as a national monument in 1911 by President Taft. It was awesome!! It reminded me of a mini-Grand Canyon, but no less breath-taking. Sheer walled canyons of gorgeous colors, ... read more
