Happy New Year! Here's to 2009. Have you been keeping your resolutions? No, thought not. Anyway we just wanted to wish you good luck for 2009 and make the most of the free internet before we leave Miami tomorrow. NYE was pretty cool here. We headed out for a late meal and tried to figure out which club to go to (most starting at $200 a head). In the end we decided to make the most of being in a warmer climate and so we decided to hit the beach. We went down towards Ocean Drive and it was packed with revellers. It is a bit strange in the US as there is no countdown to the New Year, so you had different groups cheering at different times, which was odd. Anyway we sang Auld Lang ... read more

Hi Everybody. I hope you've all got over your Christmas hangovers and gut aches and are ready for another dose tomorrow night! Well what with travelling, time issues and blank spots we've kind of skipped over, forgotten a few things that have happened to us. We had such a good time in Koinonia that it was really sad to leave. On our last day we had a great meal, with good company. We all brought small presents along and stood in a circle. Then one of the leaders told a story which included many lefts and rights, and we passed the present around accordingly. I ended up with some meditation cds and tea (which I don't drink), whilst Fiona got some peanut butter cake mix! Fiona was also awarded her Musical Chair award (which sits proudly ... read more

First and foremost hello and a belated Merry Christmas to y'all! Well here we are in Miami and the weather is hot hot hot baby! It took a fair while to drive here from Savannah, not least because we wanted to take scenic routes down the coast but ended up getting nowhere fast and to boot it was hot and sticky in the car so in the end we opted for the fastest way south down the interstate. We've left the peaceful existence that was Koinonia (Fi has forgotten to mention that we had a lovely Xmas meal there on our last day where I delivered a poem I had written to the assembled masses. They really liked it and asked me to send them copies - M) and entered the mad, crazy, noisy and sublime ... read more

Hi ya'll, thought I'd write a quickie whilst we've got free and easy access to the internet here on the Christian farm - we leave tomorrow to get to Miami for the 22nd (via Savannah on the Georgian coast). All I can do is reiterate M's comments on the last blog - it's fantastic here and we've had such a good time. It really reminds me of my younger carefree days when I travelled to live and work with others for a period of time away from home (e.g. PGL, archaeology in South France, Turtles in Greece) - everyone strangers at first but 'in it' together and ending up good friends having a great laugh with spontaneous adventures all the way. Just little things like playing a game of volleyball after lunch or having a tractor ... read more

Hello Sinners! Yes I'm talking to you. You know you need to cleanse your soul of your sins. That is why we are here in Koinonia, which is on the outskirts of Americus in Georgia. We are in an intentional Christian community and we are honestly enjoying every minute here. The rain was hammering down as we arrived on Wed and it didn't stop until the middle of Thurs. But people here were happy, not (just) because of their beliefs but mainly because they've had a drought here. This is America's deep south and it is hot! Today it has been in the 80s, which hopefully bodes well for Miami! We are staying in our own mini-house, one of several that surround a common. The work here has been varied, though it has little to do ... read more

Dear all, you guessed it, we are still farming our way down the east coast of the US and life is still good and everyone is happy. I wish I could say something drastic or dramatic has happened but I'm afraid we are still playing the part of country bumpkins and living a wholesome, relaxing life, perhaps even finding some inspiration for The Future! We have been at the current farm for just over a week now, staying with a couple Nick and Thea and their two-year old daughter Madalyn, plus goat, cat and chickens. It has certainly been different from the previous farm but not in a bad way - I was a bit apprehensive when I saw toys outside the house when we first arrived (they say never work with children or animals but ... read more

Hi y'all, it's Thanksgiving Day today, which means a national holiday and a pre-Christmas gathering of friends and family with lots of food and drink, followed by a snooze on the sofa by the fire. We have had a very yummy meal today of roast turkey and all the trimmings (the stuffing was especially delicious, as was the sweet potato, cranberry sauce, I could go on...) and the pecan pie is still to come! We figure this is the closest to Chrimbo we'll probably get as xmas on the beach in Miami probably won't be the same! Susan's mum and dad are also here so it's been really nice to feel part of the family and join them on this Thanksgiving Day. Brendan and Susan, who run the farm, have made us feel very welcome and ... read more

Hi All Just finished another hard day's work on the farm. So far we have torn down an old Greenhouse, picked carrots and radishes to go to market, and eaten some good homegrown food. The farm is nice and the owners are very friendly. There is even another Brit staying here and helping out. It is cold, particularly since we are staying in an outhouse, which means we spend a lot of time in the main house by the fire. There is no TV, so we've been exercising our minds as well on novels and Vanity Fair magazine. Apologies for the last blog, but now I can expand on what we have been doing. We left NY last Sunday and took another Chinatown bus to Philly. It seemed like a small village compared to the hustle ... read more

Hi All Just a quick note to say that we are now back in the countryside, amongst the forests and the mountains. Since the last blog in New York we have been to Philadelphia and Washington DC. We have learnt how the US kicked our backsides in the 18th century (or at least Fiona has) and how it tore itself in two a few generations later. We have just arrived on a small organic farm near Lexington, Virginia, in our new car! Where we'll be hard at work over the next two weeks. We will send through a bigger update with photos later, we just wanted to let you know that we are still safe and well. Look after yourselves Michael and Fiona... read more

Hi All Sorry It has been a while since our last blog, but things are a bit crazy in NY and you only get short times on computers. Well we have made it to New York and survived our first week here. It certainly is a city of contrasts. Both Fiona and I were a bit drained when we first arrived, so it took us a few days to adjust to the city after spending so long in the countryside. New York is everything you expect it to be, busy, noisy with a lot of different things going on. This week alone we have been to a Halloween parade, the Marathon (Go Paula!), seen the election in Times Square and getting ready for the big fight tonight! Our first night here we saw the Halloween parade, ... read more
