Kathmandu, and Team Anna was reunited at last!! What a contrast to the hills and jungles I've come to associate with Nepal! Lively, busy streets that required more than a cursory glance before you dared cross the road, cycles, rickshaws and motorbikes come flying around every corner. Shops galore selling all manner of touristy trinkets and trekking gear. This is a town of contrasts... beautiful Buddhist Temples and sculptures, intermingled with daily life, such as butchers, markets, and construction!! Team Anna bravely set aside our trekking boots and went off to explore.... First stop Durbar Square, set right in the heart of the town. A walk through crowded colourful alleys found us in a spacious, serene "square' For centuries this has been the site set aside for the rulers of the day to show off either ... read more

Olifont Fun Leaving GP in the capable hands of Rosie and Claire, Guy, Ling, Annie and myself headed off to the national park in search of the famed Nepali Tiger...................and anything else we might find lurking in the bushes. We stayed inside the park in a pair of delightful cottages (Barbet 1 & 2) set on an island in the middle of the glacial fed river, accessible only by small canoe, and aptly named "Island Jungle Resort" Meals were laid on canteen style, and tea and coffee flowed freely, so we were able to relax thoroughly in between nature walks, elephant rides and canoe trips. We were amongst just a handful of other tourists, in our jungle hideaway, most notably young Daisy and her parents who entertained and delighted us on many little adventures together. They ... read more

Back to Reality After several days at high altitude we decided to head back to reality!! Heavy snow had fallen the night before and the previously mellow path out down the valley was now a lumpy, bumpy ice rink. Guy and GP proved adept and managed the perilous ice walkway, whereas i just seemed to slip and slide all over the place.... not very graceful at all, but we did all make it to warmer climes, and the path cleared once again. Retracing our steps back past waterfalls and now familiar valleys in two days we made back to the village of Chomrong where we met two English girls, ( who we had passed en route) Rosie who was celebrating her birthday, and best mate Clara, together we shared a chatty evening of pizza, scrummy chocolate ... read more

The Great Trek Begins........................ Day ONE Pokhara to Dhamphus...STRIKE DAY Team 'Anna' (GP,Guy,Me) left most of our luggage at our little guest house and walked to meet Ling, Annie and their Porter Lal for one last coffee before starting the 20ish km walk to the official start of the trek...(strike still going) The 'warm-up' walk was quiet and reasonably flat, and with no vehicles about, our little gang marched proudly down the centre of the roads. Along the way we met with Chickens on a Bicycle (on their way to the big roost in the sky), lots of excited kiddies (the schools were closed too), and the odd Water Buffalo (with a hint of furry Yak). Before long the heavens decided to open and we quickly donned ponchos and cagoules, and for a moment we realised ... read more

Charter Flight Finally it was time to leave our beloved India, and head north for Nepal and the mountains..... We boarded one last overnight bus from Varanasi for the border town of Sunauli. We arrived as the sun was rising over a strangely quiet border post, taking our packs on cycle rickshaws, we were ushered to a sleepy Indian official who, with beedie smoking, grunted and stamped us out of India. The border was a collection of small offices and run down cafes, we simply walked past this and into Nepal. After handing over a load of US Dollars we were all issued with 3 month visas and free to go......EXCEPT....... there was a country-wide strike !! This meant no buses or taxis were running at all and we had a very long walk to our ... read more

City of Life & Death A 25 hour train journey (temperature still well into the 40s) brought us north to the famous holy river town of Varanasi. Nothing, and i mean nothing can prepare you for Varanasi. It is the world's oldest inhabited city, and boy do you feel it!! Ancient labyrinthine cobbled streets take you back, to an almost medieval era, time has stood still here....no taxis or rickshaws as the streets are too narrow, people use hand pushed carts to ferry goods to and fro, cows and dogs wander freely, and chai is on every corner. With power cuts for up to 14hours a day, the eerie street lighting adds a mystical element. It is impossible to be unaffected by the religious fervor here. It is the MOST holy place for a Hindu to ... read more

Buddhist Caves - Awesome Just when i thought we'd seen it all, along come the Ajanta Caves............. Set along side a horseshoe bend in the river (dry when we were there), they we were similar in style and age to Ellora, except they lay undiscovered for several hundred years, and were adorned with the most beautiful paintings you could imagine. It was only rediscovered in 1812 by a British hunting party. We climbed to a lookout point high on the opposite bank, which gave wonderful panoramic views of the whole site. Once inside we were met with enormous temples, designed with columns, walls, ceilings and massive statues of Buddha all decorated with intricate, stylish paintings and colorful religious scenes. Deer, and trees, and gods 'picnicking' were common themes, as well as cartoon gargoyles and geometric patterns. ... read more

Temple Madness An overnight bus took us from Hampi to Mumbai, where we happily killed a few hours at Leopold's ( bar made famous by the must-read book Shantaram), before boarding a rather crowded train for the 9 hours to Aurangabad. We stayed here mostly as a base to use for visiting the famous Ellora caves. However this town had a few tricks up its sleeves...a 'mini Taj Mahal',(built by the son of Shah Jahan), did indeed look a lot like the real thing, but sadly the craftsmanship and materials used were vastly inferior, nevertheless, i struck my "Diana" pose on the bench, and we had a fun visit. Driving back from an excursion one day we spied an Indian wedding, about 150 excited Indians dancing around the groom riding his white horse, everyone enjoying the ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Hampi April 19th 2010

Hot Hampi Wow! what a contrast. We found ourselves in the middle of a "lunar" landscape, large smooth boulders lay all over as if sprinkled from the sky. Forming hills and defying gravity by balancing in the most unlikely way, one on top of the other. For at least a thousand years this has been a holy place. Evidence of stone temples and forts was everywhere, spread out over a vast, mesmerizing landscape, cut through by several crystal clear rivers. We stayed in the old town of Hampi Bazaar, made almost entirely of local stone. The bazaar itself seemed unchanged, and families still lived in the most basic accommodation....going to the river each morning to bathe and wash clothes, and often sleeping under the stars at night, trying to escape the desert heat. We took a ... read more

Arambol What a hard life, another beautiful beach resort!! It was low season when we arrived, and it meant we were able to get a great deal on an apartment-style room, complete with shower (usually you just get a plastic bucket), kitchen, roof terrace, and last but not least a FRIDGE!! Again there was a lot of swimming and beach activities, with little bamboo restaurants keeping us refreshed day and night. GP even invented his own cocktail, aptly named "Squiffy Liffy", Due to the number consumed, the recipe is a bit hazy, but Gin and lemon were involved ....... delicious after a long hot day. Amusingly after such beverages, the boys managed to lose their clothes on more than one occasion after a late night swim. Local sights were of the natural sort here, one amazing ... read more
