Uncle Ho territory New day, new city to explore. Keen to get to halong bay as quickly as possible we combined a walking tour of the city with hunting for a live-aboard boat trip. Hanoi has a charm and character all of its own, and the Old Quarter really lived up to its name. Crazy architecture that was more french than Asian with funky little shops selling mostly artisan goodies, street hawkers, and loads of colour everywhere. It still had the crazy traffic of a thousand scooters per square inch, and crossing the road required skill and speed and quite frankly some balls!! We made a quick circuit of the central lake, which was the chosen spot for newly weds to have their wedding photos shot. Every tree and lookout point had beautiful couples dressed in ... read more

1.09.10 - GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!! (Saigon) After full powered coffee for breakfast, the team split in two...Annie, Ling and I went off to explore the town on foot and visit the War Remnants Museum, whilst Guy went for a massage and shave, Vietnamese style. (He says its by far the best yet) The museum felt like a continuation of all the atrocities we learned about in Cambodia, and was VERY anti American indeed, propaganda aside, it was brilliantly and powerfully presented and marks the end of my visits to anything to do with war and violence!!!! Too depressing by far. The second half of our day was far more fun, the three of us explored the fancy part of town which included a mini version of the Notre Dame, some beautiful parks, and more Gucci and ... read more

Mekong Delta Another golden sunrise, and morning stroll along the river followed by the very addictive delicious beef curry and baguette breakfast and we were ready to venture on to our next country, Vietnam. Team assembled, and we hopped on the minibus for the jetty, expecting to be taken to a modern busy 'harbour' for our boat, we were somewhat surprised to find ourselves in someone's back-garden! The owner was a friendly older chap who sat and chatted with us as we waited for our boat to arrive. We had to make our way through his garden and scramble as elegantly as we could onto the long wooden boat, with our packs wobbling precariously...we all made it safely on board and made ourselves comfy on the sun deck. There were about 12 of us altogether, a mixture ... read more

The Capital, Killing Fields and (S-21) 29.08.10 Phonm Penh - Cambodia's Capital. It was a long slow bumpy bus journey through villages and paddy's, with a touch of tropical rain for effect that took us to Phonm Penh. Happily interrupted by a lunchtime pit stop at a friendly restaurant. Outside we were delighted to discover some unusual roadside snacks...spiders! Massive hairy tarantulaesque beasties, deep fried and ready to munch...luckily we'd just filled up on curry and rice so could resist the crunchy snack. Back on the bus again, and it wasn't long before the buildings grew in size and density, traffic got madder, and we were nearly there. Greeting us was the usual swarm of tuk tuk drivers eager to take you to their friend's guest house for a highly inflated price. We had pre-empted this, ... read more

25.8.10 Mission to the Temples of Angkor. Graeme and Ae kindly drove us to Krabi where we caught the overnight sleeper bus to Bangkok. We arrived at 4:30am and caught a connecting bus from Bangkok’s Mo Chit bus stand to Aranya Prapet. After much confusion and several missions to avoid the scams that surround crossing the border we eventually found the Cambodian immigration. Month long visa in hand and we crossed into the kingdom of Cambodia. Passing the 100’s of casinos we found the Cambodian Immigration point that was a run down lean to building that had a tree growing through it. Stamped in and we caught a taxi with a lively Canadian couple who had just arrived from the Philippines. The 2 hour trip on a tarred road was spent discussing budget traveling the Philippines, ... read more

18.8.10 Back to Ko-Lanta Using Local transport this time we made it to Lanta both cheaply and quickly. Again bunking down at Graemes’. We spent the next five days enjoying the fruits of the island while installing the electrics, painting the walls and clearing the site. After seeing Mat (Ae’s brother) arrive with a 2kg Monk fish I managed to convince him I really needed to go fishing. We spent an extended afternoon spinning off the rocky point. 2 large barracuda were caught though we never managed to land one. Hearts pumping we watched the second break the line and disappear with our last lure. Several cigarettes and a lot of swearing later we drove like mad men through the coconut groves, bursting a tyre on route. This was swiftly changed by a kind Muslim man ... read more

9.8.10 Ton Sai Beach - A small piece of perfection. Leaving Lanta was a completely different experience from our arrival. Graeme’s car and knowledge of the local area made sure of that. Boys in tow, we made the swift 2 hour ride back to Krabi/Ao Nang, and boarded a longtail bound for Ton Sai bay. In 2002 this was a self organised affair, however this has been stream lined by the introduction of a boat ticketing system. We made the ride out to the island on a rough see with the boys deadly silent as the boat rocked with the waves soaking everything in it. We rounded the corner of the headland to see Ton Sai. Ton Sai is just as insanely beautiful as we remembered it. Limestone cliffs rising from the sea, jungle meeting the ... read more

8.8.10 Ko Lanta - Staying with Graeme and Ae. Leaving Ko San in the early evening just as the heavens opened, we caught the first of 4 buses. (We were promised a direct bus) The first was an overnight bus to Suratanni arriving at 4:30am where we were abandoned onto the pavement to await our connection. Sun up and the 2nd bus arrived to transport us across Thailand’s southern strip to Krabi. Krabi is a small town we remember all too well (nothing good) where we were dropped at a ticket sales agent. We insisted we did not need accommodation, ferry or anything else. The next mini bus took us to an undisclosed location where again we confirmed to the pushy salesmen we did not need accommodation or anything else. Once believed, we were driven by ... read more

31.7.10 Bangkok - Back in Thailand The one stop flight from Chengdu to Bangkok via Guangzhou was relatively painless. Though we were sad to be leaving China prematurely due to the floods preventing us from accessing Yunnan and south Sichuan province. The trip to Thailand was only interrupted by a brief run in with Chinese immigration. I decided to try to keep the original Chinese (Tibetan) paper visa as a souvenir and provided them with a copy declaring the original was destroyed by flood water. This was obviously completely unacceptable and we were removed from the line and marched to a private area for interrogation. Admitting defeat I provided the original and we were then escorted back to the grumpy looking official. South African passports are not the most difficult documents to forge and mine was ... read more

Chengdu Exploring a dry part of China After a lot of confusion at the train station and a sad goodbye to our cabin friends, our guest house eventually collected us and took us to our pre-booked room (The first one of the trip). We checked into Sims Cozy Guest House, a very comfy spot with all the help a traveler needs available. It was quick and easy to book our outings over the next few days to the Panda sanctuary, Leshan for the Giant Buddha and the Tibetan markets. We took several taxis around town exploring the temples, heritage markets, antique shops and Tibetan quarters. Chengdu is a large, modern town with a charm of its own. With it's own style of crazy driving and a thousand bicycles jostling for space under the much needed shade ... read more
