At the beginning of this year, as per tradition, I decided it was time to go travelling and get away from winter. I was to start in Miami again and this time move onto Central America with minimal planning and lots of excitement. Miami was a short 1 month visit this time and is a place I like to travel to in order to acquire new business and enjoy the Miami Beach lifestyle. The 1st challenge would be getting through customs as I usually get put into the 'random search, harass and prod with the white glove' category. When I get off the plane and go towards customs, there is a huge queue yet an officer at the foot of the queue looks at my passport and tells me to walk down another side path away ... read more

Europe » Spain September 30th 2014

After a couple of weeks in the UK I decided I needed to get back in the sun as August was terribly cold and wet. I left my car in the UK and flew back to Portugal for a few weeks to work. It was nice not having the car as you see a different side to the town when on foot. I did what I needed to do and booked a flight to come back for phase 2 of my trip. This time I decided I wouldn’t be driving through France all the way to Portugal but following the same journey I did the 1st time I took my car over …. Catch a ferry from Portsmouth to Santander in Spain and then drive from there (which took 9 hours last time with a night ... read more

Europe » France August 1st 2014

In July I decided I would go back to the UK during August to resolve some issues with properties I own. I didn’t know how long I’d need to be in the UK for so I decided it was a good time to come back with my car, making it easy to drive around without hiring vehicles. After researching into various route options, my mind was made up …. Let’s do a road trip all the way to the Eurotunnel port in Calais. For the first time I was going on a journey with no planning whatsoever, so much so that I didn’t even remember my passport until the final hour when I was reminiscing about another holiday and saw the passport in my head. All I knew is that I wanted to visit a few ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York » Manhattan April 1st 2014

When it was time to come home after my 3 month epic adventures, I took a flight from Rio to New York for a 13 hour wait before a connecting flight to Manchester. This time I had no issues going through customs. When they saw that I was only in NY for the day they had no issues leaving me be. I put my hand luggage into the paid storage rooms at the airport (a little nervous as it also had my new macbook in there) ... and off I went to explore The Big Apple. What I hadn't realized was how cold it would be, 8 degrees celsius. Coming from super-scorching Brazil, I was wearing shorts and flipflops and it was ice cold outside, people covered up head-to-toe. It wasn't fun walking the streets not ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Arraial do Cabo March 25th 2014

After a lovely time at Iguazu falls, I debated whether to go back to Rio for my final week or go to Buenos Aires. I'd gotten into travelling mode and was thinking about hitting a few more countries within 1 week. I decided it was a silly idea and flew back to Rio instead. I returned to the hostel I stayed in originally and received a good discount for a room to myself. I actually had the whole hostel to myself, the place still being deserted. Not a lot going on outside either and even my favourite cafe had shut down for renovation. After 2 days I decided it was time to leave again ... I was getting lonely. Previously when I travelled from Rio to Parati I missed the famous stop-off island 'Ilha Grande' and ... read more

South America » Brazil March 20th 2014

The bus journey from Sao Paulo to Iguazu was crazy long, 15 and a half hours in total. It was a nighttime journey so the idea was you wouldn't lose a day, just sleep on the bus and start fresh upon arrival. Unfortunately, I'm not one to fall asleep on public transport so I was up all night. And so was a rather annoying British traveller who yapped on about anything and everything. You know the kind, the optimistic tourist with travel guides and a bum bag who wants to talk to everyone about pointless sh!t and have the last word. There were a couple of stops on the way so that helped. One of them was this buffet food court which even had a healthy area of fruits and salads ... you paid by weight ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » São Paulo March 17th 2014

My time in Parati came to an end. I now had 2 weeks left in Brazil and despite initially wanting to stay in Rio for the month, I was in adventure mode. The more travellers I spoke to, the more I wanted to do. Others seemed to be doing the same journey as I was planning, however I missed a stop. After carnival in Rio people go to Ilha Grande on the way to Parati. I hadn't heard about this island so it wasn't in my itinerary. My next destination would be Iguazu falls, one of the modern wonders of the world. This was quite far away so I decided to break my trip into 2 and stop at Sao Paulo for a couple of days. The journey to Sao Paulo was 6 hours on the ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Paraty March 14th 2014

When the others at the hostel decided after carnival to move on, things got lonely. Initially I'd planned to stay in Rio for the whole month and just make action plans ... however I felt like exploring new territory. I went online and searched for places near Rio to visit and up came a town called Parati. The reviews were great so that's where I decided to go next. First stop ... buying a bus ticket which meant taking a trip to the bus station a day before. It's possible to buy tickets online, however if you're not from Brazil the price doubles for online purchases. I asked the person managing the hostel how to get to the bus station and he told me to get a taxi as it wasn't safe to walk there ... ... read more

Once I said goodbye to my Miami crew I hopped onto a plane headed for Rio. It was sheer coincidence yet I was to land into Rio during the heart of carnival .... a time where anything and everything goes. I didn't know what to expect but I had an idea from my research on youtube. Everything was going to be a lot more expensive for those 5 carnival days, that's for sure. Accommodation prices shoot up 5 times too and is quite hard to find. I booked mine in January from Miami, only to find nearer the time the booking didn't go through so I had to find another place last minute. Before I left Miami I did some research into how to get from the Rio airport to where I need to be and ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Miami January 30th 2014

To be honest I didn’t have that many adventures in Miami because I was busy in business. I knew the fun times would happen in Brazil. I spent 8 weeks in Miami in total, some of it living with a friend, some of it leaving in hostels on Miami Beach. I was helping my friend out with IT support and one of the advantages of going into his building was that they had a gym. I soon realized that not many people used the gym … you have to ask the receptionist for the key, go open the gym, come back and give the key back, then go back and shut the door. It was a small and amateurish gym, however it was better than nothing. After a few visits I was sure that nobody else ... read more
