At the beginning of this year I moved away from Portugal for a few months to spend winter times in a hot place. My journey led me to 2 months in Miami and a month in Brazil. I’ve been to the US many times and although I like the place, I don’t have the best of times travelling there being a British Pakistani (who is resident in Portugal and was born in Bradford). The journey for me begins at the UK airport when I’m randomly selected for a thorough inspection. This part I don’t mind so much, it’s dealing with the ego-driven officials at the US end that is the hard part. My flight to Miami from Manchester went via New York. At the customs I saw many brown people so I felt good watching them ... read more

Last week I had a getaway in Amsterdam. This place has been on my todo list, as well as going to experience my favourite DJ live (Armin van Buuren). It just so happened that Armin’s new tour kicked off in Amsterdam and I decided to just go. The tickets to the event sold out over 6 months ago but I found a website where they were being sold second-hand. Much higher cost and not guaranteed to work, yet it was worth the risk. I ordered a ticket and when I saw the name on it was Roberto Carlos, I thought “well if this doesn’t work, I’ll just pretend I’m the Brazilian footballer and they’ll treat me like royalty”. I’ve heard stories about Amsterdam, mainly about drugs and prostitution ... well actually that’s all I’ve heard. Bag ... read more

It’s about time I wrote about my trip to Morocco before I forget about my adventures there. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’ve never been before. All I knew from the advice given to me was that I should be careful as there are plenty of con artists around .... too true. Sunday arrives and I’m excited to commence my journey, really feeling the need to get away ... my 1st holiday away from holiday. I already planned the journey perfectly, being Mr organized. I was driving from Portugal to Tarifa in Spain (4 hrs) and then catching a ferry over to Tangier (1 hr), so I planned when I should start my journey in the car to arrive on time and take a little break midway. Bags packed, GPS set, and off we ... read more

It has now been 1 yr since I moved to Portugal so I thought about writing a summary of what has happened, how things have been and what I'm thinking about the future. Those of you who are waiting for the blog post about my trip to Morocco (including Moroccan mafia, robbery by me, stoned babies and typical etch style adventures), this will follow in the near future. So, September 2012 I decided to move to Portugal and as always, time has flown by crazily quick. One full yr in Tavira has been eventful and at times challenging. I made an effort early on to make friends, join a gym, etc as having a social life is important to stop us from going insane. I also decided to take Portuguese lessons from the 1st week, something ... read more

August was the main summer month and a very busy one in the Algarve. With so many cars and tourists, it sometimes felt like London when I couldn't find parking spaces or spent an hour driving home on a 10 min journey. Let's summarize a few things that have been happening in August: There are a few decent clubs around which I've visited. The main one in Tavira is called "Ubi Bubi" (I know, strange name) and it's got a great vibe to it with the different themes and chillout areas outside. The last time I went I was very hungry .... as I am most of the time these days ... so I was delighted to find out they serve food. Not much on option of course, just non-nutritious junk, but I decided to go ... read more

July in Tavira has been awesome ... so much so that I forgot about my blog. There have been some rough times too as is with life anywhere, however each day is a new day and you just move on. I'll start off with a brief discussion on health and nutrition. During June I decided to take physical fitness seriously and being quite anal with my food by logging every item I ate and % of macro-nutrients. I had a good result by the end of the month with strength, muscle/fat ratio, energy levels. In July I stopped taking things so seriously and didn't quite know what I was eating, having large meals and eating out a lot as it's easy to over-indulge, it is after all summer in a mediterranean climate. The end result by ... read more

O where o where has Etchy Boy gone .... o where o where can he beeeeee? Man I didn't even realize it's been this long, I have disgraced my FB page and I have dishonoured my FB family. I have been making notes on things to write about but most of that doesn't even make sense to me. Well, it's now summer time here in Portugal, what I've been waiting for since I arrived. The epic adventures will begin again next week, so until then let's summarize a few things I can remember about June: - I met my 1st comedy fans in my local shop. I was buying apple and underwear (not as weird as it sounds, I think) and I heard a voice .... not the usual one inside my head that gets me ... read more

The week just gone I had my 1st comedy gig in Portugal, the 1st since 2010. Unfortunately it didn't go down too well, I just didn't get the laughs. I had new material but also used some of the old set, even that got 0 laughs and I know that's funny. Over here the expat community is mostly retired OAPs and that will have had a lot to do with it ... I think I'm just too filthy and wrong for them, they were probably confused, me talking about erections then my funny looking eyes. On the night there were 3 comics, 1 dude who came on for 25 mins, then I came on for 5 mins with random filth and then another dude came on for 25 mins .... they were probably thinking "so what ... read more

The past week's adventure starts off with some good news. You may recall a while back I mentioned that I was charged for a toll rd journey twice from Tavira to Faro ... it should be €2.30 for a journey and they charged me €4.60, plus a whopping €0.64 tax on top of that. Out of a matter of principle, I complained and wrote emails to various companies until eventually I was told I'd get a refund for €2.30 so give them my bank details. I did this and made it clear that I also want the tax back, so €2.62 in total please. After a month of not hearing anything, I finally logged into my bank account and saw the €2.30 refund ... woohoo. Didn't get the tax back but who cares, I get a ... read more

MISSING May 4th 2013

Wow has it really been this long since the last post? Lost time to make up for then :)A lot has been going on in the past couple of weeks, including a visit from the parents, frozen strawberries, poolside thong fun, tax returns, cooking in a bar, diy and more.Let's start off with the situation with the car matriculation, as it still isn't over. I'm about to become illegal again since I still haven't (can't) pay the road tax and i don't have a registration document for the car. IMTT (DVLA) told me in March it would take a few weeks and I'd receive the document in the post, yet nada, so last week I returned back to IMTT in Faro and was told everything is fine in our system, try this other place called 'Conservatoria' ... read more
