Today I want to give a brief mention to language. As some of you will know, when I moved here immediately I started Portuguese lessons and have been taking 2 a week all this time. There are multiple reasons why I did this, mainly: a) I think if you are going to stay in a country for 3+ months you should make an effort to at least grasp the basics b) I like to learn new things all the time c) It helps when doing the 'boring' stuff like dealing with legalities, taxes and so on. Forcing government officials to speak in English (which a lot of them don't) means they are unlikely to want to help you out. For example, when I applied for residency last week (another post about this when it's completed), I ... read more

When I decided I was going to leave the UK, there were a number of things to sort out as you can imagine. One of them was what to do with my mail since I still needed to keep a UK presence for certain types of mail (DVLA, Mortgages, Banks, etc). I didn't want to use other people as I don't like to be a burden yet I needed a system where any urgent mail would reach me in good time. I researched a number of companies who provide services for expats .... for example you pay them an annual fee and they give you an address to use and post all mail to you once a month or so. This still wasn't good enough for me or for my complex setup. This is what I ... read more

As I'm still lazying in bed on a Sunday afternoon ... I'll summarize my 1st week of 2013 here in the gorgeous town of Tavira: I flew back in from Dublin on Monday and filled my car up (which is a rare occurence now btw ... on average I fill up with fuel every 7 wks) and got back home, unpacked, bought groceries then went out for NYE celebrations in the town square by the river ... loads of families, live DJ booth, crazy-ass fireworks ... it was cool. For the firework celebration at midnight I actually moved away from the crowd and climbed to the top of buildings looking down. It was a strange experience because I felt like Batman ... dark & mysterious character looking down on his city making sure his people are ... read more

Happy new year to everyone on this 1st day of 2013. As winter arrived, life quietened down and became the norm here, my adventures started to die down ... yet 2013 will be the year for the most awesomest adventures as I settle into Portugal life further and become a citizen here ... the next few months will be challenging yet wonderful. Today I went to visit Pego do Inferno ... that wonderful waterfall place that got burnt down in the disastrous fires last July ... well the bridge is still burnt but life is starting to come back ... green grass, orange trees, flowing streams ... so fingers crossed this place is up and running again this spring time. I met quite a few locals there who went too ... not a lot going on ... read more

UK-REGISTERED CARS IN PORTUGAL ------------------------------------------ I'm going to start making some short posts about important things that must be thought about when moving countries ... there is always more to it than initially thought about. Today I'm going to discuss having my UK-registered car here in Portugal since there is so much illogic when it comes to the law (not just here, a phonecall to DVLA today has made me think wtf?). Ok, legally I can have my car in Portugal for 180 days, then it has to be imported (with huge tax) or matriculated (Portuguese plates). I may end up doing a tour around Spain next yr so that would extend my deadline ... no probs there. Until the time comes when I must import the car or decide to take it back to the ... read more

Hey amigos/amigas and everyone else, Today's theme is 'Fish' ... cos why not? I've been quiet on the old adventure front lately, so thought I'd give u guys an update on the life of a Spanish-speaking England-bred British Pakistani in Portugal. As far as going out and adventuring, that has slowed down this month (November) ... due to me already having visited most places around here in the 1st month, the cold weather that has finally hit us and me being busy prepping things up for an awesome 2013 (more on that in the new year). I almost went to a football match in Faro today which was hosted to raise funds for the tornado victims from a couple of weeks ago ... but instead I downloaded and listened to a 3-hour Amazon Audible book called ... read more

Hellooooo England. Sooo, what's on the menu for Etchy Boy Adventures this week. Actually, there wasn't much adventuring going on for various reasons. One of these is the weather, which is fluctuating like crazy at the moment. One day it's a typhoon, next it's beach day, next it's a hurricane, next it's a beach day, next it's thunderstorms ... you get the picture, it's all a little unpredictable at the moment. On Tuesday when I woke up and realized it was beach day, I decided to ..... go to the beach ... back to Tavira Island. Now that it's low season, things work slightly differently here. For example, you have to get a boat to the island and you purchase tickets from this wooden kiosk booth type thing. That's the way I remember it. So I'm ... read more

I've been in Portugal for 2 months now and there are some things you just can't get over here. For example, I haven't been able to find mint sauce, veg stock cubes, baked beans, weetabix (unless I travel far), other food items, duvets, etc. Last week I came across a company 'Algarve Freight' who ship items from certain stores in the UK to Portugal. So I give it a go ... it was as simple as: 1. Ordering a duvet from Argos and shipping it to their Basildon address 2. Ordering ASDA shopping online (minumum £25) and shipping it to Basildon (£3) 3. On Friday the shipment leaves Basildon, on Monday it arrives in 'Almancil' which is about 45min drive for me 4. Then I pay for the shipping ... for ASDA €10 per crate (I ... read more

I was hoping to have a crazy adventure today, but because of all the heavy hardcore raining these past couple of weeks (too much for the algarve, should only rain for a day max), i decided to keep myself indoors for the weekend. Instead, let's discuss some of the things that have been going on over the past week. SOLAR POWER When I 1st arrived here, I found out that I don't have a boiler and water is heated up via solar panels on the roof. This is an awesome plan since the Algarve boasts 300 days of sun per year ... however there's a flaw in this plan ... no sun = no energy = no hot water. I found this out 1 morning when I shampooed myself all over and then went to wash ... read more

You know, since I wrote my post last week I've still been in nomansland ... and I've spoken to many people about what I'm thinking, my excitement, my fears. And it suddenly hit me ... although how I'm spending my time is useful ... it isn't necessarily necessary. Of course, when moving to a new country, you want to learn how things work, and especially when it comes to earning income and facing austerity measures, you gotta set the foundations up correctly so ur not raped down the line. However, I have been so focused on doing this with research, seeing accountants, discussing on expat forums ... that 4 weeks have gone by and I don't know where they have gone ... an entire day will go by with me doing 'something necessary' and I won't ... read more
