Today I woke up at 1pm, definitely loving the vacation and not having to wake up at 6:30 every morning, especially after a 5am night. The bathroom has two separate faucets one for hot water and one for old water which makes the morning rituals a little more interesting. I have to cup a little bit of cold water and then cup some hot water to get the warm water face rinse. After a longer than normal morning ritual due to the individual faucets, the girls decided to go to some super grocery store (walmart-like) and I initially thought I would go with them to get some soap and other amenities that I needed for civilized living, but decided that I would go to the beach on my first true day in Cape Town, being the ... read more

Please excuse the spelling errors as I am writing this at 4:30 am on Wednesday morning, I will soon go back and edit for grammar/spelling =p. I've decided to share some things that I have found odd or quite different from what I have been used to in Dubai. Below is that such list... Dubai has a way to many roundabouts. It is a little ridiculous that all the inner road intersections are roundabouts Speed bumps are as frequent as stop lights are in san francisco. They are every block if not more! These speed bumps are extremely annoying especially on a cab ride home afer a night out in the town. Twin buildings- Dubai seems to like to make their buidlings in pairs. The Emirates towers, the fake chrystler buildings. For some reason buildings ... read more

As you know if you read my yesterday’s blog I made many changes to my room and sleeping arrangement to ensure that I wake up on time today. Surprisingly it worked pretty well and I ended up waking up at 3:30, only 2 hours after I went to sleep the previous night/this morning. After walking downstairs to check the time I realized that I had awoken too early and then proceeded to go back to bed. At exactly 5:30am I woke up again and as I headed downstairs to check the time I was definitely excited to get on my flight to Cape Town. Kabir’s maid offered to make me breakfast as I headed back upstairs to shower and get ready. At around 5:50 kabir woke up and was surprised to see me already ready. I ... read more

As you probably would have guessed, if you’re reading all the entries that I’ve posted today (although i've realized that you can now change the entry date of your post.. so i'm backdating them all.) It is currently June 16 Wednesday in Cape town at 3:40 am. So I am no longer on the airplane but when i wrote this blog I was still in my seat on the way to Cape Town. Without further delay here are the details of my Sunday in Dubai. 8am- sleeping 10am- still sleeping 12am -still sleeping 2pm - yes, still sleeping Get the drift yet… Let’s just say Saturday night was epic in more ways than expected. 2:15pm - “The time is WHAT!” Wow, couldn’t believe that I slept until 2pm. Clearly my past few days in Dubai have ... read more

I am a little behind on my blogs, so a lot of these past entries are not quite for the day that they are posted on. In fact currently I am sitting on flight EK770 from Dubai to Cape Town as I am writing this on a word document with the intent of copy and pasting once I obtain internet access. This places me in a slight writing predicament as I would have this urge to describe my current situation as I write this blog but will refrain till I write the blog entry for this day (Monday June 14th). I am posting this on Wednesday June 16th in Cape Town. (the first time I am getting a good signal for wireless in Cape town. probably b/c it is 3 am) So imagine a movie or ... read more

Today turned out to be a full 24 hours worth of adventures. After waking up at 3 am to complete a hike that was not as strenuous as expected we returned to our humble resting place at around 11 am. Taking time to eat and determine a rough plan for the day and weekend we soon headed into the city to buy our tickets for the Burj Khalifa. After a quick purchase of tickets we sauntered around the mall and eventually went to the Souk al Bahar, translated as "Outdoor Market" if my failing memory serves me right. Our treks between places were quick and with much haste as to prevent rivers across our face. To fufill my desires to be a tourist and see all that I could see in Dubai, Kabir drove us to ... read more

The Hike Waking up at 3:30 am today was not that hard. I suppose I have not fully equilibrated to the time change here in dubai, although I will find out tonight. We took a cab to a friends place and then carpooled to our hiking spot. We actually left Dubai and entered Oman just as the sun peered over top of the sand dunes that enclosed us on both sides. It was the first time that i saw the desert as it is portrayed in most movies, like The Mummy, Scorpion King, and Prince of Persia. The sand dunes looked amazing and pictures don't do justice. As we continued driving I saw numerous camels snacking on the not so numerous shruberies. As we arrived at our hiking spot I could tell that we would ... read more

First full day in dubai... Today was a relaxing day, we simply woke up went grocery shopping hung out around the house and then went out to a bar for a quick drink and ended the day early. We went to a bar that was on the top floor of one of the Emirates Towers. The view was very nice. It was definitely good to have a chill day as I know the next 4 days will be continuous adventures and debaucheries. And as promised tomorrow the day starts at 4am. Tomorrow I go on a 3 hour hike to start the day off. And even more important tomorrow is the first day of the 2010 World Cup!! S. Africa vs. Mexico.... read more

The Dubai airport looks amazing. It is almost like walking around in a huge nightclub. Clear glass elevators, 3 story waterfalls, lights everywhere. Jumbotrons everywhere. The largest Duty Free shop i've seen (granted i've only seen like 5). I met up with my Sigma Pi brother Kabir and he took my friend Galen and i around the city for a 1 nigh tour as Galen was leaving the next morning for S. Africa. At 8 oclock at night the temperature outside was 80degrees Farenheit with a humidity of what must have been 99%!!! I was sweating already from just walking from the airport to the car. Driving to his house it was amazing to see the city lit up in lights. It reminded me of a Vegas/San Francisco mix with the lights and city structures. Reaching ... read more

Today I leave for Dubai! The past two days have been crazy with packing and shopping to get ready for the trip. I bought my two jerseys (Portugal and USA!) I was going to buy the home US jersey (blue) but the white stripe across the chest made me feel like i was a pageant beauty queen so i went with the white since the... stripe was less obvious. My fantastic friends (team kamaljit) surprised me last night with a impromtu going away celebration. I thought i'd be done packing by 10, which would be a significant improvement from when i normally sleep before trips, but after a little ballatore and some good times with my friends i ended up sleeping at 2am. I am now packed sitting at work, since my flight is at 4:45 ... read more
