What a brilliant 2 days we had at Russell. We took the ferry across the Bay to Paihia at one stage, to enjoy the best Pizza I've tasted this year and to visit the site of the Maori encampment at Waitangi (two days before the 170th anniversary of the Treaty). At W, we were treated to one Maori's perspective on the world in general and NZ in particular. Next day at the Pompallier Mission, we got a more nuanced version of early NZ history, along with instruction on how old printing presses work (and the Maori one in particular). We also found out the origin of words and phrases such as 'skiving off', 'upper case', 'lower case', 'in the groove', 'dab hand' etc - all of them directly or indirectly associated with the Printing Industry.
