Day 16. 4thFeb (Tuesday) We duly met & went to a local cafe for breakfast of omelets & bread, Yan got strong coffee, I asked for coffee & separate milk. I got a glass of cold milk & a sachet of Nescafe! Over breakfast we decided to see the famous Painted Rocks & then drive through a gorge shown on Yan’s map. I needed the loo so popped back to my room and went – it was like Niagara Falls! Don’t know what I ate to give me this, but had to go 3 times (and wash my undies). Told Yan when I eventually got to his car, that I may have to nip behind a boulder on our travels, but he didn’t seem to mind, so we set off. On our road, after a few ... read more

Day 15. 3rdFeb (Monday) Got up late for a 9am breakfast at our Premier Inn. Buffet style, but with fish omelet rather than boiled eggs. After shovelling that down, I packed my bags & left them in Mike’s room, then I checked out at reception and we walked to the Atlantic, taking the easiest zig-zag route which took us past a hotel with 3 tennis courts. This interested Mike considerably, but he could not find it on google maps… The beach was full of roped-off areas full of sun-loungers, with just a handful of very brown Europeans slithering about on them in their sun-cream. It was quite hot again, high 20’s at least, although there was a good breeze from the sea, we found a shady cafe and had some orange juice. On our way back ... read more

Day 14. 2ndFeb (Sunday) 8am start again. Breakfasted the usual. Packed our bags and left em in reception. Then went out into the oven of a Sunday in Taroudant. It was hot, hot, hot – low 30’s I think. We decided to do a bar crawl – Moroccan style. We started off from the one at our hotel (2 Café au laits), then to one near the Kasbah (Mint tea for me, it was hot there, even in the shade!), then to one near the Great Mosque (where we met Aziz again – nice guy, we wanted chips for the salt, but the cafe we sat in only did cakes. Aziz explained that they don’t care if we eat food from another place, so we bought our mint tea’s there whilst Michael nipped out for the ... read more

Day 13. 1stFeb (Saturday) Up at 8 again whilst still dark. Had a boiled egg, green & black olives, bread & butter, with coffee & orange juice. 2 birds come in the restaurant each morning, as at Ouarzazate, despite no open windows or doors. I did hear their dawn chorus coming from inside as I arose. Michael was wondering what happens to all the bird poo they must produce, and whether the cleaners hate them. Canny little birds, very like sparrows, they hop around the tables and carpets mainly, looking for crumbs. Around 9:30 we went for our morning constitutional, today heading for the Kasbah then onwards to the North, following the wall towards the North East corner. Here we went through a small doorway to the outside of the wall, sitting beside a fenced off ... read more

Day 12. 31stJan (Friday) Up at 8 for breakfast – a buffet affair – I had a boiled egg & olives with bread, then a cream cheese & jam butty, washed down with 2 coffee’s and a glass of orange juice. It’s quite warm here at night – only t-shirts needed. Makes a change from Marrakech and Ouarzazate where it was quite chilly at night and only warmed up by mid-day. Due to this we decided to take a walk to the Kasbah here, about half a mile away, have a look around, then come back for a shower. Which I have just had. The Kasbah was quite good. This is a walled city, 6km of it, with most houses inside them. The Kasbah and wall are made from packed earth and this is the best ... read more

Day 11. 30thJan (Thursday) A rather quick blog as I want my bed! Got up 7:30, had breakfast with Mike. 2 birds came in, manager said they come every morning for breakfast! Mike went off to the Kasbah again, for guided tour this time in order to test his French. I dozed off for half hour then packed bags. Mike came back and we decided to check out and make our way slowly to bus station, stopping at corner tea room on the way. We both had milky drinks, me coffee, Mike chocolate. We refused the bottled water as were carrying enough to see us through. At bus station I weighed my bag in and we waited 10mins until allowed on bus. Nearer the back this time so better suspension. We set off on time 12:30 ... read more

Day 10. 29thJan (Wednesday) Today we went for breakfast at 8am along with the other guests for a change. It was just getting light and quite cold outside. We walked to the Grand Taxi rank and negotiated a deal with a driver (Mohammed) to take us to Fint Oasis in his ancient, battered Mercedes, which is the nearest oasis to Ouarzazate, for 300Dh. As we left town there was a huge area that had roads and street lights but no houses! Unusual to build all the infrastructure before the houses, but similar to Spain according to Michael. Mohammed took us the scenic route through the desert which was mainly land totally covered with millions of small stones apart from the huge boulder-like mountains. We stopped a few times for snapshots and he drove us to a ... read more

Day 9. 28thJan (Tuesday) Last night we went to the on-site bar! It had a pool table and football on screens, just like home! Quite strange really over here. Eventually we settled on a bottle of red wine from the Meknes area (to the North, near Fez) which we drank after a game of pool which Mike won. Were given a large plate of fritters, olives & cold chick peas and another plate of salted popcorn. The only downside was the loud local music which we found annoying and had to shout over. Most others in the bar seemed local Moroccans. When I went to pay it was not the 70Dhs we had expected but 150Dhs (£14)! We left at midnight feeling merry… Got up late and had a good hot shower and washed 2 t-shirts, ... read more

Day 8. 27thJan We left our hotel at 7:30 having packed our bags and left them in our rooms. Walked to the card eating bank near Bahia Palace and waited 5 mins for it to open. Michael told the guy that the machine had eaten my card (in French) and, after producing my passport, he went to a small pile of ‘em and found mine! Phew! We left at 8:05 sorted. Stopped at a French-style cafe for 2 pancakes with butter & honey each and +2 croissants for Michael, plus 2 coffees (80dh - €8). Then back to Hotel to collect bags and walked to main road where we soon caught a Grand Taxi to the CTM Coach Station (30Dh). My hold-luggage had to be scanned and a label attached as at airports! Then we went ... read more

Day 7. 26thJan We got up at around 9, a good lie-in for us recently. Michael said he preferred a walk before breakfast so we went half a mile, towards the Bahia Palace to the South East of our Hotel and had a pancake with cream cheese and jam (on the menu as butter & honey, but near enough). Then into Bahia Palace (70Dh) (10Dh in my guide book!) which was quite spectacular and extensive. Fantastically intricate mosaics on walls and ceilings, nice gardens in large courtyards, amazing painted ceilings, small stained glass windows in many colours – larger ones in just a few colours. We spent about an hour there admiring the detail. Quite a few parties were being guided around but we managed to avoid having our own, which was good. In the Grand ... read more
