Train & Agra Day 22. Friday 22nd December Got up at 5.45 and met the sleepy Reedies at reception at 6. We had paid all our bills last night so just dropped keys off and left with all our luggage. The manager had told us that it wasn’t worth booking a taxi as the station was nearby, so we took his advice and flagged down an auto-rick which happened to have extra boot space. We crammed our bags in there and had plenty of room for ourselves. At the train station we got a porter to carry main bags, mine over a shoulder, 2 on his head and another pulled behind, he went to the end of platform 1 and crossed the track to platform 2. Although our train wasn’t in yet (it was only 6.15 ... read more

Jaipur 5 (Elephants) Day 21. Thursday 21st December 2017 We had a late(ish) night due to planetarium so a late breakfast (8am). Shirl had arranged a visit to an elephant painting place who said they would send a taxi at 11am, which they did although it was just a single tuk-tuk, so we were cramped up. We were taken to Amber (again) and shown places we had already seen on our previous visit. We had to insist that we just wanted to see the elephants! A guy with a motorbike took both kids with him, leaving more room in the tuk-tuk for us adults. The kids loved it. At the elephant place was one elephant 18 years old, but another came soon afterwards. The kids got to feed them both with what looked like large corriander ... read more

Jaipur 3 (Pink City Day) Day 19. Tuesday 19th December 2017 So a quite early start. Mal pays her food & drink tab and I explain that I will pay her room. We all see her off with Manu in the big cab, hope it all goes well for her return, she did manage to get Atithi to print off her boarding passes for this internal flight and tomorrows international one. We all got a tuck-tuck to the Pink City and walked through numerous back-alleys, remeniscent of Varanasi. This was where the dalits (untouchables) live and they were quite surprised to see us mob amongst them, very friendly though. There were goats in coats and one goat wih enormous teats (possible mastitis?) They gave us directions and weeventually arrived at the City Palace (the nearby Jantar ... read more

Jaipur 2 (Mal’s Day) Day 18. Monday 18th December 2017 After breakfast we rang Manu the taxi driver for a 10am pick-up to take us to Amber Fort (pronounced Amer by locals). On the way we stopped for a view of it from the road. Beside some snake charmers of course. They were quite good though and Shirl ended up with a turban and pipe & we thought she was joining them. Then we were asked if we wanted an elephant ride up the hill at Rs1200 each, or a jeep at Rs600 for all of us. We opted for the jeep. But I noticed that other cars like the one we originally came in, were going up the hill, so this jeep was an extra (Manu’s cousin it turned out). We arranged to meet up ... read more

A Sarfarmie & A Train Day 16. 16th December 2017 Our last day at Skays Camp. Satyendra & Kay have said that Bill & Shirl can send the kids over, on their own, any time & they will be well looked after. The kids seemed keen too so that’s a possibility for the future if Bill & Shirl need a break. To keep us all occupied Satyendra drove us all (except Mal) to his nearby farm about 5 miles away. On the way we passed many small farms often with kids waving and shouting “hello”. We were on the edge of the reserve here so there were forests on one side & farms or open ground on the other, all very picturesque. When we arrived, we were greeted by 2 dogs (collie style) who seemed very ... read more

Safari 2 Day 15. Friday 15th December A lazy start. Breakfast at 8.30, I just had meusli & coffee – how very English of me. Have decided on eating less as am putting on weight with all the pakoras and fried breads between meals (& sometimes with meals). The others decided to walk into the village for the ATM to pay their bills here. I had a good chat with Satyendra & Kay explaining our whole adventure to them, whilst they exlained the huge arguament that had occurred earlier next door – apparently there had been a drunken party in the garden next door (disturbing Mal & Shirl) and afterwards an Uncle had made love to the wife, or some equally disturbing outcome… But more of village gossip later. I finished my blogs of the last ... read more

A few comments on Varanasi in retrospect (don't believe Sue Perkins!) This higgledy piggledy city built behind the Ganges river front which is made up of temples, burning ghats, bathing ghats & palaces. No cars, and the nearer you get to the river, no motorbikes or scooters either. So you would think it would be quieter. Wrong. Befor sunrise each morning there is a cacaphony of noises from chanting, bells ringing, caged parrots squawking (near the Reedies room), doves cooing (outside my room) and monkeys fighting (never far off). The streets are not just full of people; there are cows, goats, dogs, buffalo, the occassional cat (with longer legs than in the west). We watched a dog gnawing on a rat yesterday, the kids were fascinated & horrified. At night the dogs bark almost constantly, you ... read more

2nd day in Tala. 14th December Up at 5.30 and meet others at 6 ready for our morning safari (Mal not coming as she can’t get up in the mornings, due to her insistance on late nights) We drove to Gate 1 (there are 3 or 4 gates), our driver Hadrim (Satyendra’s brother) takes our passports at the check-post, to check it’s us who booked this mornings safari (only about 6 jeeps are allowed in at any time). We get our passports back and pick up a guide and head off into the reserve, just as it’s getting light (6.45). It is a bit cold though although I had a fleece on, so made use of the blankets provided, as did the others. Very soon we saw some sika deer very close to the road, then ... read more

Day 13 (1st in Tala) 13th December We arrived tired & grumpy in our posh taxi at about 7am to be met by our host Satyendra who asked if we wanted breakfast. We declined and all went to bed. We all have nice rooms. I awoke around 11am and went to the outside dining area, where the others were already having brunch. There I met Satyendra’s English wife, Kay, who had been on the safari that I had originally booked this morning but was apparently unchangeable (I feel that we should pay extra as they have had to meet the costs for our train debacle). They are both in their early 60’s, so around the same age as us. But what a couple. Satyendra is quite a character, always laughing and joking. Ready with a tall ... read more

Train Journey From Hell Blog 10 Tuesday/Wednesday 12/12.17 We left Puja Guesthouse in Varanasi at about 11am. Farewells all round, everyone friendly and wishing us well. Got 3 porters (2 from hotel staff) to carry our luggage to a place where tuk-tuks could drive. Then we got 3 tuck-tucks (they are called auto-rickshaws over here) to Varanasi Junction Train Station which seems to be in the process of a major refurb, so half knocked down. Then 3 porters to carry our bags up the stairs and down to Platform 4, arriving there around noon. Then the nightmare began. Our train was delayed initially by 2 hours, but as 14.30 approached it was pushed back again to 15.00, 15.45 and finally 16.10 which was the last info we got. It did appear around that time, leaving at ... read more
