Day 5. 24thJan (continued) We did go out last night at around 8pm, after an hours siesta. Walked up past the Grand Socco looking for a mobile shop that was shown on Google but didn’t exist! We both needed them as neither could get a signal out here. As we were returning it started raining, raining heavy, very heavy. We took shelter under shop awnings, only moving on when it eased off. Still got soaked literally to the skin. Found a mobile shop much nearer to our hotel and bought sim cards. Michael had no trouble with his (€8) although it took some time setting up in the shop. I just bought one with no data on it (€3), thinking I would sort it out when we returned to the Hotel (where my phone was). The ... read more

Day 3. 22ndJan Didn’t get up ‘till noon as last night we stayed up until 3am drinking whisky and smoking…. We had seen the weather forecast and it was bad till the afternoon and as it was already chucking it down, we decided to have a party and sleep in. There was thunder & lightening, very, very frightening! And huge waves in Valencia apparently. So it was a late start to the day. Went to shops with John for fish, spuds & more whisky (a good Scottish blend called William Lawson’s at 40%, nice & smooth and not bad at €8. I got Bob a new bottle as we drank his last one dry). Walked to the Coach Station with Bob at around 6:45pm – 20min walk. I bought 2 tickets for the 6:45am to Algeceras ... read more

Day 1. Mon 20 Jan Taxi came 10mins late at 7.40am, then hit unusually heavy traffic to airport so arrived at 8.20 (cost £19). No problem with bag check-in though and flight left on time at 10. 2.5 hour flight, seeing Cornwall from high up which looked good, and the snow-topped Pyrenees which looked fantastic. Sadly most of Northern and all of Southern Spain was shrouded in cloud, so didn’t see much until landing, which was quite exciting – zooming low over the Med to the airport. Eventually found the train station at Malaga but had some trouble connecting my phone (which used to automatically locate a signal, but now I had to do it manually – what is the world coming to?). Eventually texted John with my eta at Malaga Center and after the 12min ... read more

Here I go again! Set off tomorrow for a short adventure in Spain and Morocco. Only three and a half weeks but mostly hectic travelling. Start off with 4 nights in Malaga, staying with friend John who is hiring an apartment near the city centre (he's already there). John's brother, Michael, who lives near Granada will be joining us towards the end of this week. On Friday 24th, Michael & me head off by coach to the ferry. Then, after a night in Tangier, catch a train to Marrakech, a few nights there then a coach to Ouazazate, near the sahara (3nights), then a coach to Tarroudant, south of the High Atlas from Marrakech (3nights), then after 1 night in Agadir, a coach to Tafroute, in middle of the Anti Atlas (3nights). Then it's a mad ... read more

Last Day in India Day 28. Thursday 28th December Ate breakfast in the garden at our hotel, it was that or eat in our rooms as there is no restaurant here! This is supposedly a 3* Hotel – The Indira International Inn. But they put us in double rooms, no extra bed as requested (and paid for) so Reedies were all squashed up. We then found that although we are supposed to get free breakfasts, that only applies to one person per room! And then only up to Rs150, barely enough for an egg & coffee. We asked for an extra bed to be put in the Reedies room for tonight but no bed was there when we returned in the evening! I’ll be having wiords with Agoda when I get home and getting a credit ... read more

Blog 7, Thumping Day (as I told the kids) Day 27. Wednesday 27th December We paid our room bill after breakfast which was much less than I expected Rs13000 rather than Rs22000, then we paid our restaurant tab which I had estimated at around Rs20000 but they only charged us Rs8600! I did query this saying that it should be much more, but was assured it was right. I think they were genuinely very happy to have us to stay! The blind fools. We had to check out by 10am but were allowed to keep our bags in reception and went for a walk in the Nature Forest again, down the road. The kids enjoyed it again especially the long concrete slide and we could keep an eye on them from the shade of some trees ... read more

Boxing Day Blog Day 26. Tuesday 26th December Today started with a pack of monkeys making their was across the rooftops towards our rooftop restaurant. Kids were fascinated, adults worried. Our waiter produced a catapult and just the sight of it seemed to work and they moved along. We decided to visit Akbars Tomb today, the last major site to visit, but about 10km from the Taj. Then we planned to carry on to a good market for some last minute shopping as we only have a few days left now. But trying to hire a taxi was very hard here as they are not really allowed in this area. But we found an auto-rick who said he had a taxi. But he drove us for miles in his barely held together rick, with rusty holes ... read more

Taj & Park Day 25. Monday 25th December. As the Sun newspaper would say: A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OUR READERS We were up bright and early at 6am. Leave Hotel at 6.45 and walk to the South Gate, which is just around the corner. Half way down the road a guy tells us that the South Gate does not open ‘till 8pm, so we head for the West Gate where a large queue had already formed, although the gate was shut. We then had to join another queue for tickets, but this was a very small queue for forigners (Rs1000 each, kids free) our ticket price included free overshoes (for entry to the Taj) and a ½ litre of water each. Then we went to join the queues for entry. We found that there were ... read more

A Wild Day Out in a Deserted City Day 24. Sunday 24th December (Christmas Eve!) Earlyish 8am breakfast, ready for early start; did a bit of crisps & sweet shopping for eventuality of there being no cafes in a deserted city (which there weren’t). Set off about 9.30 in a proper taxi (booked through our auto-rick yesterday) who drove us the 40Km to Fatehpur Sikri. Leaving Agra we drove through the cantonement area (large army base) which was massive. Then onto a toll road which was like a motorway apart from all the tractors and cyclists, and the occassional motorbike going the wrong way on the hard shoulder. All trucks stay in the “fast” lane so we had to overtake them on the inside. But we made good time, reaching a reckless 50mph at times! I ... read more

2ndDay in Agra Day 23. Saturday 23rd December About 10am we decide to walk to Agra Fort, about 2km apparently. We try to find a path through the parkland between us & the fort, but it is harder than we thought. We had to double back once and head for the West Gate to the Taj (½ Km), then after ½ Km we come to the bus park for tourists visiting the Taj, mostly school outings it seems. Eventually we find a narrow path fenced off from the rest of the park. This is about ½ Km long, then we follow a road with inaccessable parks on each side for about a Km, then another busier road from one roundabout to another and after crossing some very busy roads we were actually following the walls of ... read more
