FROM AMA LOG: Sunday, 8/20/17 Murray Labyrinth WEATHER: Foggy morning, light winds. Mostly sunny and temp. about 72˚ There isn’t a more perfect place to wait that than in the Murray Labyrinth. It’s stunningly beautiful, the kind of place that is featured on covers for Travel British Columbia website and Canadian sportsman magazines! At least 2 other boats slip into the Labyrinth the back way and we congratulate ourselves on our smart anchoring after all. Meanwhile back on Ama that is starting to look like a repair shop and while waiting for paint to dry (actually JB Weld), what could be better than going fishing? Peter merely drops his line overboard, letting his banana sinker hit bottom, and he snags a grand halibut. From that moment on, we no longer felt sorry for ourselves. The fish ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Friday, 8/18/17 Port McNeil WEATHER: Foggy & lite drizzle in am. Clear, sunny afternoon with light winds, temp. about 70˙ Port McNeil is a town we love but are starting to hate. I take the third, and last, road for my walk this morning. Now I have officially walked the town, up the south and west hillsides and north out along the spit past the noisy, logging, cement & gravel operations. This business is probably the earliest riser with groaning tugs, whining saws and shouts heard even above the truck roars from the steep climb up and back from timber forests to the sea. Between the two of us, we have frequented the shops enough to know at least one clerk, usually the owner, in every business. We are on first name basis ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Thursday, 8/17/17 Port McNeil WEATHER: Mostly clear, sunny day, light winds, temp. about 75˙ PILOTAGE: Another no travel day in lovely Port McNeil. We fill our day, walking the town (BB) and finishing repairs (PW). While we are still waiting for the inverter to arrive, we enjoy tourist activities here and get to know our neighboring sailors on the docks. Peter has just about perfected his elevator pitch about the Inside Passage Decarbonization Project (IDPD). Thankfully, people are interested! Lots of good questions and shared stories about what they are already doing. Solar panels are commonplace in the boating community but now we are hearing of all kinds of other ideas. We’ve seen high tech wind generators on the fancier boats. Boaters are rigging heat exchangers, engine generated water heaters (like on Ama) ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Wednesday, 8/16/17 Port McNeil WEATHER: Cloudy skies, partial sun in afternoon, light winds, temp about 75˙ PILOTAGE: Another no travel day but plenty of problems to keep lazy minds active. Laundry (BB) and more electrical issues (PW) fill the better part of the morning after a brisk morning walk and recharge (literally for our phones & computers) at the local Coffee shop. We are finally in town when the community thrift store is open. I find some cute clothes but they come with fleas, luckily it's located just across from the local laundry. After returning to Ama, we decide to go fishing! Heading out into the strait for fun seems very strange, but freeing. The skies brighten a bit and northerly winds remain subdued for the afternoon. We fish off Malcom Isl. rounding ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Tuesday, 8/15/17 Port McNeil WEATHER: Cloudy & warm. Light winds and partial sun, temp 78˙ PILOTAGE: It’s a no travel day for Ama and crew as we spend the morning provisioning (BB) and diagnosing electrical problems (PW). It’s a beautiful day in Port McNeil though. I start the day by circumnavigating the south end of town, walking up the large hill overlooking the harbor and offering views down the Strait that we motored through the day before. The ripe smell of berries stands out on this cool clear morning. The only other travelers on the roads this early are bulky black ravens spread out like a search party, equidistant from each other, examining scraps, shiny things and tasty dead tidbits squashed flat on the roadways. It doesn’t really take long to get enough ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Monday, 8/14/17 DEPART: Forward Harbor @ 0620 ARRIVE: Port McNeil @ 1815 NM: WEATHER: Clear skies and red clouds to east at sunrise. PILOTAGE: Ama’s sailors were up early and ready to head out by 0620 expecting light winds and good weather in the Johnstone Strait for an early morning departure. The unforgettable warning sound from the control panel stopped us before we even left the harbor. “Engine overheating,” says the Capt. An experienced crew never panics, so we simply don our lifejackets, set anchor and open up the floorboards so the captain, turned mechanic, could diagnose the problem. Could it be a simple air lock in the engine? That possible solution worked last year, so Peter opens & closes nuts, check all the fittings, all seem well so we close up the ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Sunday, 8/13/17 DEPART: Thurston Harbor @ 0735 ARRIVE: Forward Harbor @ 1130 NM: WEATHER: Calm, clear skies with no smoke! PILOTAGE: We leisurely cruised from Thurston Harbor after picking up our empty, sigh, crab pot right by Shoal Bay, spying boats at least 3 deep rafted up to the docks there. The drizzly rain kept up a few hours but cleared by the time we peeked out on the Johnston Strait while skirting by it going up Chancellor Channel. We made it to Whirlpool Rapids a half hour before slack and slipped right through and into Forward Harbor. Peter immediately jumped on maintenance duties after cruising the harbor and anchoring safely. Sealing up cracks and corners was not what he had in mind for a freshly renovated “new” boat. It seems that Ama ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Saturday, 8/12/17 DEPART: Squirrel Cove @ 1000 ARRIVE: Thurston Harbor @ 1730 NM: 31 WEATHER: Calm, clear skies (except smoke). PILOTAGE: Super smooth motoring as we head north and up Lewis Channel, skirting the west side of Desolation Sound. We pass 2 humpback whales in Calm Channel and never spotted them but found out from all the chatter on whale-watching boats on channel 7A. We easily glide through Yaculta Rapids though arriving almost an hour before slack then play tourist in Big Bay while waiting for just the right moment to enter Dent Rapids. Huge sea lions, sun-bathing on the north side of Dent Isl. preen and shake their manes, noses point straight up, then dip as if to wave us through safely. Hearing news of brown bears in Frederick Arm, we wander ... read more

FROM AMA LOG Friday, 8/11/17 DEPART: Henry Bay @ 0545 ARRIVE: Squirrel Cove @ 1110 NM: 32 WEATHER: Clear and calm early morning departure. Sky is light blue and hazy sky (from smoke) obscures some heat from the hot summer sun. We enjoyed light winds in the am and increasing to 10 -12 knots while crossing the Georgia Strait. PILOTAGE: Early risers got us underway by 0545 (5:45am) making us the first boat to leave Henry Bay. Having said our goodbyes the night before, we slipped away quietly and were just past the bar into the Georgia Strait before we were hailed by Silhouette to say one last farewell and we’ll see ya’ in Nanaimo on our return. A short day cruising across the Strait with jib and mizzen sails up for steadying and an extra ... read more

FROM AMA LOG Thursday, 8/10/17 Henry Bay WEATHER: Clear with smoky skies PILOTAGE: No travel day. We sleep in (good fun), relax and visit with H & L more. We were not discouraged yesterday when checking the crab pot, after dropping at 45’ on our way into the bay. Peter rowed out to check our first set after the tide changed but found nothing. Hauling it up today, though led us to believe either this was not good crabbing grounds or we didn’t have good bait (fish food kibble resembling dog food, coated in squid juice). So no fresh crab but thanks to our friends, we didn’t suffer. It’s a lovely hot day that makes us all want to swim, so we do, a lot. We also feast some more on fresh salmon, corn fritters and ... read more
