FROM AMA LOG: Wednesday, 8/9/17 DEPART: Nanaimo @ 0600 ARRIVE Henry Bay @ 1330 NM: 45 WEATHER: Clear but smoky skies, calm seas on departure. Winds increase to 7-10knts after noon. PILOTAGE: It wasn’t long after hauling anchor that we started hearing Winchelsea Control repeatedly broadcast that Whiskey Golf was closed to through traffic. The military was hard at it, dropping something (people?) then picking them up in the middle of the sea. We watched for wildlife but only spotted 2 seals along the way. It’s funny having phone & cell data for the first time aboard. It seems that we regularly check to see how important we are, if anyone still includes me on group emails, if there is something I absolutely have to care for now. FROM AMA LOG: Tuesday, 8/8/17 DEPART: La Conner, WA @ 0600 ARRIVE: Nanaimo, CA @ 2030 NM: 85 WEATHER: Clear, calm in Swinomish Channel on departure. Winds light all day with clear (not blue) skies. Air is thick with smoke from “hundreds of fires” that drifted westward from the mainland. Everywhere looks like the polluted skies of Vietnam. PILOTAGE: We were relieved to waken to clear skies and no fog, dispelling our fears about traveling up the Inside Passage in the month of “Fogust.” Of course, after leaving the Channel, we heard Coast Guard reports of zero visibility in Rosario Strait and the only way to get through the San Juan Islands is at some point through Rosario. A solid white cloud bank seemed fixed to the horizon as we sung through the Guemes Channel “S” ... read more

FROM AMA LOG: Monday, 8/7/17 DEPART: Olympia @ 0445 ARRIVE: La Conner, WA @ 1830 NM: 136 www.DecarbthePassage.net WEATHER: Calm, foggy with 0% visibility on departure, clearing with the dawn about an hour later. Later brisk winds picked up as we cruised through Admiralty Inlet then calmed again as we passed along the east side of Whidbey Is. PILOTAGE: Embarking from our homeport of Olympia at 4:45am was surprisingly easy considering sunrise was an hour later and fog settled in around us as soon as we threw off the lines. There is nothing quite like a thick blanket of fog piled on the quiet of early morning to seep into our bones and merge us into the marine environment. Ama’s 47.5hp diesel engine, running on pure waste-based biodiesel fuel, purring like a happy cat, was smothered ... read more
