I spent a fun morning yesterday figuring out the city map and walking around San Jose. It is a nice city, nicer than the stuff I read about it. In CR, the only other big city I have done a walking tour of is Cartago which was the capital in the past. Cartago is dirty with litter and traffic but I think San Jose is nicer since it has less traffic in walking areas and lots of parks, museums and other cultural places to visit. I found the bus terminal that will take me to the Caribbean Coast and decided to take the noon bus. The rest of the morning I toured an exhibit where they take a statue and different businesses and artists decorate them. These I have seen are so creative and this display ... read more

Hello everyone! I had a long day yesterday getting to Costa Rica since I had to get up at 2 am in Brooksville. I arrived after 3 pm Florida time. I decided to take all my bags to the hotel where I will meet the other USF people on Sunday and leave the largest there and take my backpack on the next leg of my journey. It is a quaint little hotel with lots of small gardens through it. The breakfast area looks like a nice little park. And the breakfast was wonderfully tasty and healthy. I had gallo pinto and eggs, fruit, some very strong coffee (half a cup) and some tea. I am glad that I get to come back here on Sunday. The showers were not the suicide showers that I had to ... read more

Hello All! On Yesterday and the day before I rented a bicycle for the afternoon. On Tuesday I went to Tapanti National Park which was a really tough uphill bike ride and got to see some of the mountains and the river that flows into Orosi. I went with a girl I met from Colorado who was studying spanish this week. On Wednesday we did another killer ride to the Ujarras Ruins which I had seen before but wanted to ride past some places that I had only visited with a driver. On both days we had great weather and I got a lot of sun, even with lots of sunscreen. Today is my last full day. I had classes in the morning and I had a nice lunch with my pal, Karen, from Colorado. Then ... read more

Hey All! Yesterday I was in Cartago again to see my veterinarian friend Jose who accepted a job in San Jose in December. He is working for the department of agriculture here and for the USDA in the US. We had a nice breakfast very close to the Basilica de Los Angelos or as is commonly said here ¨La Negrita¨. The story is as follows: A little indian girl was in the woods gathering firewood and she found a small statue in a clearing in the woods. She took the statue home and placed it with her things to play with later. When she went to the woods the next day to collect wood, the statue was in the same place in the woods where it was before. She again took it home to place it ... read more

Hi! This week has been busy with lessons every day and meeting some of the new people who have come to the school to study this week. I have also had lots of homework and so haven´t taken many pictures. I feel a little better speaking Spanish in Orosi, but today I took the bus to Cartago which is a much bigger city and it is difficult to talk and understand with all the hustle and bustle. The bus is a nice ride through one city that is bigger than Orosi, Parasio and then on to Cartago. Cartago is the name of the city and the provence (sp?) that I am in. It is also the county seat and was at one time the capital of Costa Rica. I have come looking for Spanish Books and ... read more

Hello Everyone! Yesterday, I spent the day with the family I am staying with. I baked some desserts for the kids and for the adults. In the afternoon we went to visit Marita´s sister and her parents up on the mountain where I had had my 4 hour hike on Saturday. The homes are built into the side of the mountain with ¨basements¨like in Pennsylvania. And the driving up in those mountains really does require 4 wheel drive. We did not have to use 4 wheel drive but if it were to rain heavily, driving would be nearly impossible. There were 6 of us in the cab of the small Nissan truck. Luckily we didn´t have to drive for more than 20 minutes. I met Marita´s mother and she keeps chickens on her property. The father ... read more

Hello again! Today is Saturday and no classes for me. I have spent the morning doing a 4 and one=half hour in the high mountains to the south and west of the Orosi Valley. There were really nice views (and I have photos!) of the village but I am not able to post them until I can borrow a card reader from the owner of the school next week. The owner of the internet cafe has a reader but it won´t read my card, for some reason. I wish I thought to bring my cable to connect to the parallel port but I never use that at home. I went hiking with a Canadian woman who is a few years younger than me who works on the Pacific side of Costa Rica marketing and selling condos. ... read more

Hey Everyone! Every morning I have been walking with Marita around Orosi. Marita is the mother of the family in Orosi. We have been walking every morning for at least an hour. I will try to post some pictures of the Rio Mache which is the river that runs near the town. The town gets its electricity from the river via a hydroelectric plant near the town and the river. Our walks are always around the river. There is a foot bridge that is very scary to walk on since it is a suspension bridge and it sways when we walk across the river. Now I am finding it hard to find the words to write here since I have struggled all afternoon in Spanish Conversation. My teacher says that I am coming along ¨poco y ... read more

Hey! So much has happened since I arrived in Costa Rica! After I spent my first night with my assigned family we all woke up and had a sandwich, a banana and coffee for breakfast. An extended group of female friends and family had planned a walk to the hot springs starting out at 7.30 am and so I went along. It is no problem to go at that time since I was up since first light at 5.30am. I had been to the hot springs on my last visit and only put my feet in. It was an hour walk there and back and we soaked in the nice warm water for an hour. I can only understand a little of what people are saying but it is definitely harder to understand women since they ... read more

Hey Everyone! I made it to the village of Orosi and I am sorry that I have no pictures yet, but I hope I can post a map for people to see where Orosi is. I had no problems with my flights and from Miami to Costa Rica I sat with a very nice young guy who is an engineer in Costa Rica. We had a nice time chatting and he suggested that I go to Puerto Limon to see the Caribean Coast. I would like to do that on this visit and then see the Pacific on the next visit. I will see if I can work it into my schedule. I have been assigned a family with three girls and as far as I understand a single Mom. Today is the birthday of the ... read more
