2014 09 07 Day 6 Because we didn't get back to the motel until midnight, we slept in. Last night we decided that instead of driving four hours round trip to see Jewel Cave National Park, we would spend the day seeing Deadwood and relaxing. We left the motel around 10, got gas and got the car washed to remove the seven layers of bugs from the front of the car. We drove to Deadwood (about 15 miles) and had a very nice breakfast at Lee St. Station. We then walked through Deadwood which has absolutely nothing to see, unless you like to look at touristy shops with overpriced junk they call souvenirs, or casinos. The welcome center had a small exhibit detailing the history of Deadwood. Deadwood originally was Sioux land. While Custer and his ... read more

2014 09 06 Day 5 We decided to say in Spearfish for 3 nights so we wouldn't have to rush to see everything we wanted to see. Yesterday made us very weary. We slept late and went to breakfast in the motel at 9:41. The food was OK, but the service was abysmal. The waitress brought a carafe of coffee to the table and didn't provide any cream. The next time we saw her was at least ten – fifteen minutes later when she brought out our food. By that time the coffee was cold. She put the check on our table while we were eating, and we never saw her again. When we were done eating, we waited at least five minutes before we decided to chase down someone to pay our bill. Chris walked ... read more

2014 09 05 Day 4 We decided, geniuses that we are, that we didn't need to each have our own suitcase, we could combine our clothes, etc. into one suitcase and eliminate the need to bring two suitcases into the motel room each night. So we consolidated two suitcases into one. These suitcases are smaller suitcases that would fit into the overhead compartments on a plane. We also have a larger suitcase jammed full that we don't bring into the room each night. I think we packed enough for a two year journey. I emptied the trunk to store unneeded item in the wheel well, and carefully repacked the trunk. When we got in the car at 8:51 to leave Sioux City, the tire pressure indicator light was on. Unfortunately the tire pressure gauge was in ... read more

2014 09 04 Day 3 Not much to report today. We got an earlier start than usual, leaving the motel at 8:09. It was raining, but not so much that it made driving difficult. When we got to President Herbert Hoover's Birthplace and Museum about two hours later, it was sunny and warm. The Hoover museum and birthplace was very interesting and informative. We spent about a half an hour at the blacksmith shop listening to the blacksmith explain what life was like when Hoover was a child, and how things were made back then. I had always thought that Hoover was responsible for the Great Depression, but apparently, it was more Coolidge and Mellon than Hoover who caused the depression. Hoover acted according to prevailing economic theories of the time (which were horribly wrong) believing ... read more

2014 09 03 day 2 Apparently there is a learning curve for all of the gadgets we bought for the trip. When Chris entered the address for the Hayes Presidential Center, she did something wrong and we ended up in the town of Sandusky instead of Fremont. Fortunately it didn't take us too far out of our way. It took about an hour and a half to get to the Hayes Center. The Rutherford B. Hayes (who would name their kid “Rutherford”?) Presidential center was very interesting. It is fascinating how information can be presented to color opinions. Hayes was president when the U.S. Decided to squeeze the Indians onto reservations and steal their remaining lands. The museum presents this event as an attempt to help the Indians! My recollection of the Hayes presidential election is ... read more

We had originally planned on leaving at 5:30 am so that we could visit the Rutherford B. Hayes museum in Fremont, Ohio on the first day. As I was packing, I discovered that I was missing a prescription medication. Being labor day weekend, I wasn't able to get it called in to the pharmacy until Tuesday morning, so instead of leaving at 5:30, we didn't leave until 11:17. This actually worked out in our favor. Not having to rush to get to the Rutherford B. Hayes museum before it closed made the first day much more relaxed and enjoyable. On previous trips, I always made reservations a day ahead, which meant that I had to know how far I would travel the following day. We decided that on the first night, we would find a room ... read more

Day 16 May 19, 2013 Woke up at 5:30 and checked the weather, it still sucks, so I decided to stay here another day. I didn’t do much, just mostly relaxed. I wanted to see the Tuskegee museum, but it is closed Sundays due to the sequester. I rode into the Montgomery looking for a postcard. I went to the visitor’s center, which had a sign that you could buy souvenirs there. I parked by bike, walked up to the door and read a sign that said “closed for private party”. It was hot so I gave up my quest for postcards and went back to the motel. Monday should be interesting. There is a scenic highway that runs from Gadsdan, Alabama to Chattanooga, Tennessee called “Lookout Mountain Scenic Highway”. Is is 93 miles long and ... read more
