Day 15 May 18, 2013 I got good nights sleep, which was welcome after last evening’s debacle. The two visitor centers in the French Quarter didn’t open until 9 am so I didn’t have to rush out the door like I have been. When I checked the weather, today was going to be hot in New Orleans and warm with thunderstorms in Selma, Alabama, which is where I was headed. It wasn’t shaping up to be a wiz-bang day. When I checked the website of the two National Historical Trail interpretive centers in Selma and White Hall (I can learn from my mistakes – I should have checked yesterday) I discovered that they close at 4:30 and that the Selma interpretive center is closed Sundays. There was an alert on the web site that stated the ... read more

Day 14 May 17, 2013 I left Tallahassee early, the sky was still dark and it was cool. When I got on he highway there was very little traffic, it almost seemed like I was on an open road in the west (almost). I am excited to be riding without all of the congestion. I love watching the sun rise, the period of time before the sun actually rises and the sky is starting to get light, is very beautiful and peaceful. As I mentioned, it was very cool and my hands got really cold. After about a half an hour of cold hands, it occurred to me that my hands would be warmer if I turned on my heated handgrips. It is about 1600 mi from New Orleans to home and 7 days to do ... read more

I rode 450 miles in 11 1/2 hours (8 on bike). What started out as a nice leisurely ride ended up being not so leisurely. Expected to get to the motel at 2 pm, didn't get here till 5. Tired and hot (not sore, I took Tylenol at 2). I am going to nap and go into the french quarter for dinner and entertainment, so I will not be writing a blog tonight. I do have notes and will add the blog as soon as I am able. In the meantime, I am curious about who is following this blog. The Blog tells me the number of hits, but it can't tell me the number of people (it could be one person reading it many times or many people reading it once) and it can't tell ... read more

Day 13 May 16, 2013 Because I went to bed so early I woke up at 3:30 and decided to get up and have a nice leisurely morning. Then I looked at the map and realized that I was two hours south of Tampa and if I didn’t get past before rush hour, I would be stuck in traffic all morning. So I left at 5:15 and made it past Tampa without too much trouble. The weather was good, nice and cool and it was nice watching the sun come up. That is such a peaceful time of the day, even if you are tooling down the road at 72.5 mph on a Goldwing. I had planned on stopping in St Petersburg to see the Dali museum, but it would have delayed my trip by almost ... read more

Day 12 May 15, 2013 Didn’t sleep a wink, neither did Chris. So I got up super early and when the cab came at 6 am to take them to the airport, I was packed and ready to go. I figured with such an early start I would miss a lot of traffic (traffic in Key West sucks) and it would be a little cooler. I did miss the traffic; I found it interesting that there were a tremendous number of cars going south toward Key West. I assume that not everyone who works on Key West lives there. The ride up the Keys was as bad as the other three times I rode up or down the Keys. If I ever go back to Key West (doubtful) I will fly. The weather today was absolutely ... read more

Day 11 May 14, 2013 When I woke up this morning I felt miserable. Between walking 789 miles wearing flip flops the previous hot, muggy day without drinking enough fluids and drinking a case or two of rum, I was sore from head to toe, a little nauseous, and freezing. I had some coffee, drank some water, took some Tylenol and went back to bed. After several hours I had recuperated enough to drive Chris to the airport so she could check in and print her boarding pass. Still felt like shit, and hadn’t eaten anything, but able to drive. Florida doesn’t require that you wear helmets on motorcycles. As I only have one helmet with me I let Chris wear it. Her head is more valuable than mine, and I tend to drive really, really ... read more

Day 10 May 13, 2013 Joe went fishing in the morning. Chris & I walked to Camiles restaurant for breakfast not too far from the southernmost buoy. I got another blister on the walk to the restaurant; these sandals are not working out for me. Breakfast was very good and reasonably priced. After breakfast we walked over to the southernmost buoy and took a picture. We walked back to the condo very, very slowly so I wouldn’t make the blister any worse. It was pretty hot and muggy so when we got back to the condo we relaxed and cooled off for a while. After my body temperature returned to something south of almost dead, we walked over to the Truman White House for the tour. I wore flip flops to avoid more blisters. It hurts ... read more

Day 9 May 12, 2013 Got up early because we had to be at the boat by 7 am. We had a little trouble finding the boat, but we got there in plenty of time. The weather was perfect – sunny, low 80’s, not much humidity, and mostly calm seas. The ride out was two and one-half hours. The boat was very comfortable and relatively new – only seven months old. They provided breakfast - hard boiled eggs ham, bagels, cereal, etc. not great but certainly good enough. The crew members were very friendly and helpful. They all seemed to enjoy what they were doing. During the ride they provided some history and described the islands we rode past. That’s when we learned that it is called the Dry Tortugas because there is no fresh water ... read more

Went to everglades yesterday, got back late, will post entry later I noticed I put day 7 as day 6 and left out the real day 6. I put all of the days in the right order and added the missing day. That's what happens when you post after drinking. Pictures - on the road, the days I did have time, I wasn't able to upload them. Here in Key west, I haven't had time (sober time anyway). I will try to upload pictures before I leave the Keys on Wednesday. Day 8 May 11, 2013 The car we rented was a convertible, so we rode up the keys to Everglades National Park with the top down. The temperature was low to mid 80’s and mostly sunny for most of the ride up the keys. After ... read more

Day 7 May 10, 2013 Chris and I rode the Motorcycle to the Publix grocery store on the top of the island to get groceries at a price that wouldn’t bankrupt us. We were limited by the amount of space on my motorcycle, but we managed to fit everything, including a case of beer for Joe, and a Styrofoam cooler, which Chris had to carry on her lap, what a sight. We had breakfast at La Creperie, not too pricy and the omelets were pretty good. After breakfast Joe rented a bicycle to go to the beach and Chris and I Walked 5 blocks to the Hemingway House for the tour. It was fascinating, Hemingway was quite a character. We went back to the condo to cool off (today it is really hot). Then Chris and ... read more
