Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Trang March 9th 2011

After spending a great final week in Malaysia we headed for Thailand on 5th February. We decided to stay overnight for 2 days in a small town called Trang which we thought would make a change as it isn't particularly a tourist destination and we knew we'd be heading to many beaches in the coming weeks. The journey involved a ferry and mini van which was relatively painless. As this is not a tourist destination we managed to stay in a really nice hotel for really cheap called My Friend Hotel, it had a hot shower (rarity in South East Asia for cheap), a fridge, fresh bed lining everyday and best of all Satellite TV so I could watch Liverpool beat Chelsea (gettin!!) We were lucky in that on the weekend they have night markets in ... read more

We arrived at Langkawi on 29th January via a ferry from Penang. After looking at 2 of the more popular hostels and finding them full, we headed to Daddy's hostel where we ended up staying 7 days total. After getting our room we immediately headed to the beach, which did not disappoint, with beautiful white sand and clear sea it was the nicest beach we had seen so far. On our first full day we went island hopping to a few local spots, the first Pregnant Lady Lake where the story goes that if a woman drinks the water they'll get pregnant, was a great swim with really fresh water. The 2nd we fed eagles from the boat which was really good. Finally heading to Beras Besar Island, a secluded island with a beautiful beach. Unfortunately ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang February 6th 2011

Our next to last destination in Malaysia was Penang, we arrived here on Wednesday 26th Jan quite late after a Ferry, (2 hour wait), 3 hour bus and another Ferry to George Town in Penang. We stayed at 75 Travellers Lodge for 3 nights which is a cheap hostel with a nice restaurant next door. I have to be honest there isn't that much to do in Penang, and anyone considering going I'd say only stay 2 nights. We visited a few buildings in GeorgeTown such as Fort Cornwallis and Sri Marraram in Little India. On the same day we also sorted out our Thai visas for 60 days as there is a Thai Consulate in Penang. On our final day we got a bus out to Penang hill with the intention of climbing it. Unfortunately ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Perak » Pangkor Island February 3rd 2011

On the Sunday the 23rd Jan (yes I know I'm quite a bit behind with my blog ;-) we set off for Pangkor. We'd heard great things about the small island, with beautiful beaches and relatively quiet compared to other travel destinations. 2 buses, one ferry and a taxi later we arrived on the island in blistering heat. Hayley managed to barter our accommodation down from 80 RM a night to 55RM which I was very impressed with, it did help that the resort was empty mind. We had a private Chalet which was very nice. We spent the rest of the day on the beach, did a bit of swimming and a bit of just chilling in the heat. It really does have a beautiful beach. Unfortunately the next 2 days weren't as nice, the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands January 27th 2011

We set off on our first bit of real traveling on Thursday Jan 20th, after a bit of a mixup with the location of the bus (note for the future, look up the day before we move on!!) we set off on 2 buses to get us to the Cameron Highlands. We arrived at around 6pm and chose Father's Guesthouse at 15 RM (around 3 pounds something) each per night in a dorm. The Cameron Highlands as the name suggests is highup in the hills so is a bit colder than KL but is still very warm during the day. It has beautiful scenary and is surrounded by rainforest. The next day we went on an organised tour in the afternoon which consisted of just Hayley and I!! This involved taking us around a tea plantation/factory ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Kuala Lumpur January 19th 2011

So after 2 years of planning, our travels have finally begun!! I will write a bit about what we've been doing in a paragraphs time, but first as not requested by Em & Steve Stead I will tell a bit about the journey to London Stansted and then to Kuala Lumpur (KL). It was very long and very boring!! I was going to include some pictures with this blog but unfortunately the hostel we are at does not allow you to plug in USB devices, will try to upload some in the future. We arrived at KL at around 7:30 and after getting a 2 hour bus, followed by a taxi who we graciously gave 3 x the recommended fee to we were at our hostel, Reggae Guest House 2 which is in Chinatown and is ... read more

Hi and welcome to my blog. I'll try and update this often with what we've been doing and where we have visited. A quick warning, this blog is likely to be full of bad grammar, equally poor jokes and the mass overuse of the exclamation mark!! With that out the way I'll introduce myself for those who don't know me and explain where we're going. I'm Dave and I'm going travelling with my girlfriend Hayley on the 15th January, we've been planning this trip (and saving) for near on 2 years so now it's nearly here I think it's fair to say that we're both very excited and maybe a little nervous. Our journey starts with a midday train to London Stansted, we're arriving ridiculously early as our flight isn't until 10 in the evening, but ... read more
