Our JAL 777 has WiFi and we just flew over Ajax, which is near Toronto. Never heard of it. Assuming JFK is OK and the traffic is not bad, yeah, right, Fran and I should be at our apartment in a couple of hours. Our day was long but relatively uneventful. I enjoyed writing this travel blog. Next bloggable trip, ????????? David... read more

Final Full Day: Overnight it rained hard and the wind rattled the thin walls. The increased humidity was evident in the room but there was a smell to the humidity, probably from the tatami mats on which the futons lay. These mats covered the floors in in the rooms and common areas of both of our ryokans. They are the normal floor covering in traditional Japanese houses.Traditionally made from rice fibers, they have a smell that is a reminds me a little of the smell of dashi, the fish based spice that is common in Japanese cuisine. I noticed it more than Fran or Gary or Judi. It seemed more pronounced during the rain. Listening to and smelling the storm from the futons felt very Japanese, not like what a storm feels like from a King ... read more

Day 7 First, I need to clear something up. One of the readers of my travel blog pointed out that I had a "tone," which I didn't know I had. He or she read the previous posts, and concluded that I'm not really that happy in Japan. That would be very wrong and so I'm adding another picture, one taken at the Golden Temple, you remember, where the crowds of school children had my fight or flee instinct engaged. That place. Well, I wasn't as miserable as I might have sounded. I'm having a great time. Now on to Day 7. This was a travel day with a trip to the train station and a two-hour train ride. But we are old hats now and breezed through the process. Taking our seats in our not high-speed ... read more

Day 6: Our our agenda this morning is one of the most “important” temples in Kyoto, the Golden Temple. Over two thousand metric tons of gold leaf was used in the construction. That’s a lot of gold leaf. Our guide suggested we visit it first, before the crowds. Was she tuned in? I had my doubts but we were hopeful. However, when we arrived at the parking lot there were dozens of buses. Uh, oh. Immediately, as we entered the grounds, we knew for sure. I said to myself, I have a choice here; either get with the program, ignore the crowds, or get the f out of there. I was the worst of our group, I think. We attempted the former. The crowd was massive, maybe ten thousand plus, and it consisted mostly of teenage ... read more

Day 5: Our full-day tour began with a rickshaw ride through a bamboo forest. The rickshaws were waiting for us as we entered a neighborhood of Temples (Shinto not Jewish). As we got going it became quickly obvious that a whole lot of tourists have rickshawed this way before. The experience reminded me of the “Handsome Cab” carriages along Central Park South in New York. The difference being that instead of horses pulling the well-worn route there were 20 something young men. Being in rickshaws differed from being on our own two feet in the distance covered, or maybe just how long it took to cover the same distance, but there were thousands of tourists and even more students walking this same route. The drivers had their places to stop for pictures and they took them ... read more

Day 4: We were leaving on the 12:08 bullet train from Hokado to Kyoto but we were up early. I felt much better. We wandered through the quiet hotel until we found the coffee bar open. We drank excellent coffee and read the Japan version of the NY Times until breakfast. The headline picture was of the twisted mess of train cars from the derailment in Taiwan that killed 12 and injured 150. Later that morning we left the hotel for a short drive to Hokado station where we would take a high-speed train to Kyoto. The station was crowded, but still quiet. The instructional signs were in Japanese. Only the times were readable for us. It was a complex but completely logical process to find the right boarding area on the right platform. With help, ... read more

Day 3: Today, was a travel day beginning with a 3 hour drive to Mt. Fuji. Normally an uneventful ride, it got complicated because my stomach was trashed. I was sick as can be and we had to make two emergency pit stops along the way. Anyone reading this who has traveled overseas gets it. But we drove on, our goal being the Hokado Sculpture Park. Judi was feeling the effects of a long drive down winding roads and being stuck in traffic. On arrival there was lunch to be had for two, maybe three out of the four of us. On the menu there was a sandwich.Tomato, American cheese, Canadian bacon, and lettuce on white toast. Perfect. Judi and I asked Cheers to get us some plain toast. She tried. But like a lot of ... read more

Tokyo Day 2: The next day consisted of another full day tour with visits to museums and more shrines. Fran wandered off at one shrine and we assumed she was lost forever. But she ended up taking a selfie in front of a place at the shrine so we could find her. Pretty clever. The museums were interesting but were all about antiquity or western art. In the afternoon we visited a huge department store, Takashimaya. What I noticed was how many people worked there. Each department had probably four times the sales people as a comparable store in the US. They all seemed very knowledgeable about their wares. And it’s not just the stores. In the hotels, the museums, the restaurants, at the airport; everywhere it seemed that there were more people working than were ... read more

JFK to Tokyo: II'm going to try to write this travel blog/essay, whatever you call it in a way that is interesting and informative. I am going to fail a lot. Your solution is to skip over parts that are about things not interesting or informative. Some of you will be done reading within 12 seconds, others, the more discerning and open of you will read and hang on every word. I'll never know. In this season it's only appropriate to start with politics. As a Democrat, I am all for equality and equal opportunity, but with all due guilt and humility, I’ll tell you that that sitting and sleeping in the front of a JAL 777 is the way to go. Even Democrats can enjoy this. You know what Obama said, the one thing he'll ... read more

The seas calmed during the night. The forecast was for cloudy skies and a 70% chance of rain. The high was to be 60. As we pulled into the harbor at 8 AM, the sky was clear and temperature was in the mid 60s. The guides all tell us that forecasting in the spring and fall around here is notoriously bad but it worked in our favor. Everybody did the same thing today; walking tour of the city, paella for lunch and a boat ride through the wetlands at the Albufera Parc. We did the walking tour before lunch and the boat ride after. Others did it the other way around. We were in groups of 15 selected on a sign up sheet the night before. Since Fran wasn't at her best this week and since ... read more
