Quick update, no photos tonight. I didn't take any and Fran hasn't uploaded. After arriving in Malaga in the early afternoon we walked with the group to our selected excursion, a visit to Malaga's most popurlar museums, the Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Picasso Museum. We didn't get 100 yards before Fran looked at me and I said ok, and we bailed. It's getting to be a common occurrence. Not that anything was wrong. There was a local guide for our group of 24 and he liked to talk. All guides like to talk. What else are are they supposed to do? But we had a big group and people were frigging asking him questions! And so he was in heaven and we quietly departed. Exploring Malaga was great fun. It's a beautiful city with most ... read more

This is from last night. Didn't go. Lots more later. Interesting day. Quick update, no photos tonight. I didn't take any and Fran hasn't uploaded. Good morning. Yesterday afternoon was at leisure in Cadiz. We decided not to go on the all day excursion to Seville; two hour bus ride each way, as we had been there several times when Lisa lived their her junior year. Fran stayed in to nurse her cold and she “encouraged” me to go do something. As my grandson, Charlie, is prone to say, "leave me alone." I signed up for a bike ride around and through the city. Orion has brand new cruising bikes and our group, which consisted of the leader, one other guy, and a woman tried them out. The leader, the on board concierge, is just a kid and he had no idea where to ride but he was enthusiastic. The city is a bulbous shaped peninsula. We decided to circumnavigate it, ... read more

Portimao, Monday afternoon After lunch we docked in at the harbor of Portimao, still in Portugal. Portimao is a small city in the Algarve region. The predominant industry here is catering to the large number of tourists and second home (condo) owners. With pleasant weather year round, Portimao has become attractive for upper middle class people. It is certainly not Cannes or Monaco, but is seemingly uniformly nice. There’s a terrific beach that we passed on the way into port. There were several land excursion choices and we selected a three hour hike and bread tasting. The hike was to be across beautiful hillsides to look at rock ruins from the Neolithic period, called Megaliths, followed by a tasting of “tibornia, freshly made, wood-fired bread with regional olive and garlic along with aromatic herbs cakes and ... read more

Since I haven’t been on a cruise since 1968 (SS Rotterdam, NY to Rotterdam, Heineken 5 cents), I wasn’t sure what to expect and I still am not sure. We scoped out the other passengers. They are mostly our age, really old, maybe older. But our cabin is really nice. We put everything away. Fran’s being a good sport and soon, we’ll leave the dock. In the meantime, we’ve had lifeboat drills, drinks, snacks, drinks snacks and a performance of Fado, music almost unique to Lisbon. There was a singer and two guitar players, one electric and one acoustic. The music is a bit sad and very emotional. The singer is sad and emotional and happens to be beautiful which helped me enjoy the sad, emotional music sung in a language that I don’t understand. I ... read more

Time for restaurant review and a little more. Last night, on the advice of our friend Barry, we took a car to Sesimbra, a small town on the coast, to have what our friend Barry said would be one of the best meals anywhere. The drive was about 40 minutes, due south, across the Golden Gate look alike bridge crossing the Tagus River, then into a wooded landscape that looks a little bit like north Florida or Georgia, flat with scrubby pine trees and oaks. As we approached the coast, the land grew hillier and we climbed steeply until we could see the coast and the Atlantic. As we descended to Sesimbra the view was spectacular. There is a marina with a diverse set of large motor yachts, dozens of sailboats from magnificent to modest, and ... read more

The sun is out and the temperature is about 18. It doesn't get much nicer than that. Today, we met Paulo, the only Jewish guide in Lisbon. This was planned. Our friends Howard and Becky recommended him. We met him at the Arch, down by the water and he gave us his family's story. He told us about his grandfather trying to get from Poland to Argentina during the war but getting caught up in Italy. He ended up spending the war hiding in a convent. After the war he met his wife and they remained in Italy. where his father was born His father was an engineer and was working in Lisbon which is where he met Paulo's mother. His mother came from a family in Portugal that traced back over 300 years but until ... read more

Hello again to those folks that are anxiously awaiting brilliant and incisive information about Lisbon and all the other places that I'm probably going to write about over the next week or so. Well, keep waiting, or go to Andrew Harper or Lonely Planet or Fodors. They're pros. I'm just an amateur not terribly interested in whether you gain any real knowledge by reading this. On the other hand, I'm not trying to sell books or hotel rooms. But as long as you're here, I'll bet you give me a minute or two and that's all I'm going to take. For those of you surprised to see this popping up on your screen, Fran and I are about to embark on our first cruise, a National Geographic trip from Lisbon to Barcelona with a bunch of ... read more

South America » Chile » Atacama April 16th 2015

Thursday, our last day of formal, planned activities in Atacama started early, 5:30 AM. That's not normally much of an issue for us but after last night's dinner, which I've promised not to talk about, and the wine, which our guide instructed us to go light on and for every glass of wine drink a glass of water (it probably was good advice, but . . .), it felt like the middle of the frigging night. We shuffled from our room to the front desk, bundled up against the morning chill and walked by the 4 resident llamas which we could smell before we could see, toward the front desk and coffee. One cup and the fog in my head began to lift. Our trrp was to the Andes geysers. Geezers to the geysers. An hour ... read more
