While I was busy doing pretty much but hanging out by the pool yesterday morning, Fran was in San Pedro de Atacama behind her Leica. She was pumped to go and pumped when she returned. She is by nature a city girl and while landscapes can be breathtaking and memorable, for photograpy, she loves people and dogs, not necessarily in that order. In San Pedro de Atacama, the colors are vibrant, the people are different, there are stray dogs all over of every size and shape, and there are cute kids. She was in her element, putting on her best Gary Winograd to get her shots. There are a few attached to this blog post, but the detail is not enough to tell how really interesting these photos are. Maybe when we get back, she’ll print ... read more

As we flew north from Valparaiso the Andes were on our right and the Pacific was on our left. As the Andes turned inland we did too and followed the mountains north for about 200 miles. On our left the green disappeared and was replaced by red/brown and red/orange, the color of the desert. Every so often there was a small village and square ponds of fluorescent green looking liquid, looking incredibly out of place. These were the copper and Lithium mines which are the most important industries for all of Chile. Aside from that, the scenery was spectacular. A small strip of grey green trees, scrubby and thorny appeared on the left side of the plane and we landed nearby. The town is called San Pedro de Atacama and it lies pretty much in the ... read more

On our last afternoon in Valparaiso, we again left aside the tourism itinerary and walked through the singular hill out of the many that comprise the city that is undergoing what all the travel writers say is a renaissance. To try to put it in perspective, this is city of 600,000, not a small town. And there is one fairly small area, the area where our hotel is located, that is undergoing this transformation. Maybe it’s more than that but if it is, it is not much more. Still the revival seems to be expanding outward. A lot of it is based on graffiti. From what we've seen in Santiago and along the road to Valparaiso, graffiti is something of a cultural scourge. Everything is vandalized by paint. This is true in Valparaiso too but on ... read more

Yesterday afternoon, after a swim and nap by the hotel pool we drove to the highest point in Santiago to view the sunset. Our driver, Hector, was challenged by the hoards of bicyclists also climbing the hill. Also, some of the vehicles that were going up were crawling so that they would arrive just before sunset, not a moment earlier. I taught Hector an American word that if taken literally, described an antiquated device that women used to use to clean their unmentionables. It was very hard to explain this with my limited Spanish but once it was clarified, and once Fran was finished pummeling me for being immature and disgusting, both our driver Hector and our guide Alwin, found the term hilarious. They practiced their pronunciation until they got it right. Now Hector knows what ... read more

Driving into the city from the bucolic countryside on a Friday afternoon during rush hour reminded me that this vacation was designed to encompass a lot of different experiences. This experience, a nasty rush hour with buses "blocking the box," horns honking, motor scooters driving between stopped cars and pedestrians crossing in the middle of the street, was not at all different from any big city's Friday afternoon experience. By the time we arrived at the hotel we had adjusted and were in full urban mode. We were late on our schedule so we just dropped our stuff at the hotel and got back in the van for our visit to one of Pablo Neruda's homes. If you're not familiar with Neruda, you should be. He was a Nobel Prize winning poet who wrote beautifully and ... read more

Yesterday's entry, after lunch, et al, was devoid of photos. On the oft chance that you found this to be a problem, this morning's entry will contain photos from yesterday and today. There are pictures of us and pictures of us and more pictures of us. I hope you don't find this aspect of the blog too off-putting. I worry that it might be like when I was a kid and we had to go to my grandmother's house to see slides of her trip to the "Orient". I remember those times well because I didn't like them at all. Fran never had to do this as a kid and even if would have had to she'd remember it fondly. She seems to only remember the good things about her youth. Truly we are of different ... read more

I'm back. Surprise. We are traveling again. Just the two of us. It was supposed to be four but circumstances changed and it's two and as much as we will miss our companions, I'm pretty psyched to do an adventure with just Fran. Ok, adventure might be an overstatement. Eight days in Chile is not like going to say, Vietnam and Cambodia, but it's a place we've never been where they speak a language that I think I can get by with but can't and my attempts result in those with good manners smiling and nodding and everybody else laughing at the asshole gringo. Fran' efforts to communicate in Spanish are interesting. She just talks English with a Spanish accent assuming that will work. Now don't we all do that when we're with people with accents? ... read more

I started this final update in the Hong Kong airport. I'm finishing it in my office in Florida. We're glad to be back. I was thrilled to see my house and my dogs and they were thrilled to see us. I had coffee made with the coffee I'm used to in the drip pot I'm used to, not the Vietnamese or Cambodian coffee made in an espresso machine. Their coffee is good but our's really packs the caffeine. It was wonderful to be able to brush my teeth with the tap water. Bottled water tooth brushing is not my preferred method. It was great standing in the shower and letting the water pour over my face with my mouth open. Damn am I spoiled. Thank you for putting up with my ramblings on politics and culture. ... read more

In Siem Reap I have so much to write about. It’s overwhelming and I haven’t had time, but this afternoon, while the gang is out in rural villages, having a rice harvesting experience and riding on an ox cart, I’m hanging out in my room at the Amasura hotel, one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at. I’m having some stomach “issues” and now all four of us have had them. I was last. I’ve decided not to write about the specific activities that we have done as tourists though if you’re a tourist you should do these things. The temples are magnificent, we visited a half dozen, each one from different periods and in different states of deterioration (the youngest one was from 1,100 CE. They are wonderful to visit for so many reasons, ... read more

Update from yesterday's post. I've heard from at least one fellow traveler that I should have written about a part of our visit to the Ci Chi tunnels, the part where they gave us AR15s and M16s and sent us into the jungle. Well not exactly. Anyway we were given a chance to try these rifles. Fun. A couple more pictures are attached.... read more
