Today we leave for Cordoba. We pack and then clean the apartment. We haven't stayed in an apartment before on either this trip or the last one, so we're not entirely sure what we're supposed to do. I tell Issy that I'm pretty sure professional cleaners will come in and clean it before the next guests arrive, and that we don't need to do this ourselves, but I don't think she believes me. By the time she finishes, the apartment is much cleaner than it was when we arrived, and probably cleaner than it was when it was first built. I make a last desperate attempt to dry the washing on the balcony. We catch the metro to Estacion Sants which is Barcelona's main station. There are lots of steps we need to go up and ... read more

Yesterday's activities have worn Issy out and she says she wants to spend the day sleeping. She tells me that I should go out on my own, so I do, to the convenience store to buy some laundry detergent. We're all out of clean clothes and I'm not confident that I'll know how to operate a laundromat if I go there on my own, so I wash the clothes in the bath. There's bright sunshine outside so I drape the wet clothes over the chairs on the terrace to dry. When Issy wakes up it's after midday. She looks outside. It's now raining, and the clothes aren't too dry any more. Issy points out that there's a clothes line in the light well outside the bathroom window and that all the apartments have them, and I ... read more

Today we've booked a tour to Montserrat, which is a mountaintop monastery about forty kilometres inland from Barcelona. Our guide, who's name in Arne, tells us that the bus can't leave yet because we need to wait for some people who are running late. He says that they missed the tour completely yesterday, also because they were late. They get on the bus. Issy says that I shouldn't suggest to them that maybe they should consider buying an alarm clock, no matter how tempting that might seem. Arne tells us that Barcelona was founded by the Romans in 300 BC, and they then ruled here for 800 years. We pass the remains of the original Roman city wall. He shows us a statue of Christopher Columbus on top of a large column. He says that it's ... read more

This morning we've booked a guided tour of Park Guell. We arrive very early, so we walk around the streets near the entrance to try to kill some time. Issy says that she has heartburn, so we need to find a chemist. She's a bit worried that she might not be able to explain to the chemist what's wrong with her. I tell her that I think I know the Spanish words for "heart" and "hot" and that the chemist should be able to work out "heartburn" from that. I get the look; she tells me that if she says that the chemist will probably think that she's having a heart attack. The chemist is a very friendly lady, and we ask her if she speaks English. She says only a little bit, but then tells ... read more

The metro here seems to be super efficient and a far cry from our sleepy rail system back home - I don't think we've yet had to wait more than three minutes for a train. We walk along Las Ramblas which has a central footpath with traffic lanes on either side of it. The footpath is where all the action is - street performers, cafes and artists. We decide to visit Palau Guell, or Guell Palace, which is a large house that Antoni Gaudi built for Eusebi Guell and his family. Guell was a wealthy entrepreneur and industrialist and he became a sponsor and friend of the great architect. Guell had a wife and ten children so a large house would clearly have come in handy. This spectacular edifice is on six levels, including stables in ... read more

The owners of the apartment seem to have gone out of their way to make sure that they've catered for all tastes. There are four books on the coffee table; three of them are guidebooks on Barcelona and the fourth is a text book on nuclear physics. They must have some interesting guests. We've heard from several sources that we need to be very careful of pickpockets here in Barcelona. I try on several different pairs of shorts with a range of pockets. Some of the pockets are deeper than others; some have buttons and some don't. Issy tests them all out to see how easy it might be to take my wallet out without me noticing. I think it's just as well for us that we don't have to rely on her skills in this ... read more

I have a texting conversation with Emma, and as usual I manage to annoy her. She swears at me. I remember reading somewhere about someone getting arrested in Dubai for swearing on Facebook. I wonder how the Emirati Police will know it's Emma that swore and not me? I think it might be just as well we're leaving today. Today we'll be flying to Barcelona. It's lunchtime as we drive to the airport and it is again ridiculously hot. We pass hundreds of labourers in heavy blue overalls spending their lunchtime sleeping under the massive overpass they're building. It's hard to see how any amount of sleep could be enough to allow you to keep doing heavy manual labour in this heat. The Dubai airport hasn't got any smaller since we arrived here. I read somewhere ... read more

It is of course still crazily hot, so we spend the morning lazing around the hotel's lukewarm pool. We've booked late afternoon tickets to go up the Burj Khalifa, so we head off to the adjacent Dubai Mall, which we read is the largest mall in the world. Of course it is. Judging by everything we've heard to date, I'm sure that if any other mall somewhere had the temerity to try to outdo it, the Dubai Mall would just quickly tack on a couple more floors and restore the natural order. It is indeed massive, and we need to get a map to try to get our bearings. There's a two storey high thirty metre long aquarium in the middle of the mall, and one of its walls is a single pane of glass. That's ... read more

First cab off the rank this morning is Aquaventure Water Park, which is out on a group of man made islands built in the shape of a palm tree, and known locally as "The Palm". We're not sure how we're going to get there, so Issy tells me that I should ask someone. She knows that I don't like asking; I always think that I should be able to work things out for myself without needing to bother people with silly questions. I eventually cave in to her intense pressure and ask the hotel receptionist. I assume Issy will be proud of me, but apparently not. It seems that I didn't ask enough questions, and there are still things that we need to find out. I bother the receptionist again and Issy thankfully seems happier now. ... read more

We decide to go exploring, and head off towards Dubai Marina which only looks to be a few hundred metres from the hotel. It's ridiculously hot and uncomfortable. My iPad tells me that it'll be 42 degrees here tomorrow with 91 per cent humidity, and that means it will "feel like" 59 degrees. 59 degrees! That really is ridiculous. Apart from us the streets are largely deserted, which we suspect means that we're the only people here stupid enough to be wandering around outside when the temperature feels like it's somewhere north of 50 degrees. We stagger into an air conditioned mall and perhaps unsurprisingly discover that this is where all the people are. We take a few minutes to cool down before heading outside again where it seems to be even hotter than before. We ... read more
