The gap that I need to fit through between the shower screen and the wall to get into the shower in our apartment is very narrow. I wonder how wide it is, so I decide to measure it. I don't know how I'm going to do this because I don't have a tape measure. I get some toilet paper and tear off a piece that's the width of the gap. I then measure how long the piece is with the ruler app that I've downloaded on my iPad. The gap is 30.8 centimetres wide. I don't think that most adults would be able to fit through this front on, and I know quite a few who would struggle to fit through it side on. I also think that I should probably find some more productive ways ... read more

Issy gets up before me, which is a bit unusual. I've started to notice that this only happens on mornings when we're leaving somewhere, and she then makes sure that she packs and locks her suitcase before I do. I think she's working on the theory that if she forgets to pack something it will then have to go in my case. This is a very cunning ploy; she always seems to forget to pack something. I also seem to have inherited the large plastic bag with all our dirty clothes in it. Admittedly they're nearly all mine, but my suitcase is now starting to bulge at the seams. Issy is either turning Spanish or reverting to her teenage years. She's been going to bed at 2am every night, and then waking up at about 10.30am. Actually she doesn't wake up; I wake her up. First stop this morning is the El Greco Museum. On the way we pass the 14th century Puente de San Martin, which we read is Toledo's second oldest bridge across the Tagus River. It has large towers at both ends, and its 40 metre long central arch was apparently one of the longest on any bridge in the world at the time it was built. We buy tickets to both the museum and the synagogue next door. The museum was founded by the Marquis of Vega-Inclan, who was a patron of the arts, and it opened in 1911. The Marquis ... read more

Issy sleeps in, so I read an article on Spain and time zones while I wait for her to stir. It seems that Spain is in the wrong time zone. It's west of most of England, but is in the same time zone as European countries that are east of England. It's been in the wrong time zone since early in World War 2 when Hitler came to Spain to try to talk Franco into Spain becoming Germany's ally. The two leaders agreed that an important first step would be for them both to be in the same time zone. I'm not quite sure why they thought that this was an important step, but it seems that this first step then became the only step. The article says that Spaniards sleep nearly an hour less on ... read more

We get up at 7am, and we're in the breakfast room as soon as it opens at 8am. We're the only people here which is probably not too surprising. Seven am on a Sunday morning, which is effectively the same as 5am on a Sunday morning anywhere else in the world, is probably a time that most Spanish people haven't experienced very often. It's 9am when we get to the station but all the shops are still closed. We need to change trains in Madrid, and we have to queue up there to get our luggage scanned. When we get to the front of the queue we're told that we're in the wrong place, and that trains to Toledo leave from a different part of the station. The helpful railway official we ask for directions tells ... read more

The breakfast room is full, but the lights with the motion sensors still go on and off at regular intervals. I think that they need put up some signs telling people that they need to keep moving while they're having breakfast. I'm not sure the alternative of putting up signs telling people that they're not allowed to move at all would be all that practical. First stop today is La Casa de Pilatos which is about a ten minute walk from the hotel through some very narrow and windy streets. We read that this palace was built in the early 16th century as the residence for the Mayor of Andalusia. It's now in private ownership and serves as the permanent residence of the Dukes of Medinaceli. I'm not too sure who they are; there seem to ... read more

The lights in the breakfast room keep going on and off. Issy says that they're sensor lights and that we just need to stop moving. This would seem to be a bit easier said than done; we're eating so it's a bit hard to keep perfectly still while you're trying to put things in your mouth. I feel like I'm back in the shower in Cordoba. Issy says that I'm the only person in the room who's worried about the lights, and that I should just ignore them. We're the only people in the room, so I suspect that this might also mean that she's the only person in the room who isn't worried. Issy sleeps in. I tell her that this morning I'm not going to go to breakfast until she wakes up and comes with me. We have breakfast late, although we start to wonder whether maybe we're just getting in tune with Spanish breakfast time. Our hotel serves breakfast between 8am and 11am, which seems to confirm our previous suspicions that Spain really is about two hours out of sync with the rest of the world. We read that Seville is by far the largest city in the south of Spain, and is the capital of Andalusia. It looked from the bus coming in to have very extensive suburbs, whereas there seemed to be hardly any suburbs at all in either Cordoba or Granada. Seville also looks to be virtually dead flat. As we've done in other ... read more

Issy sleeps in, so I again trudge down to the restaurant alone and sheepishly request a table for one. The waitress sits me at a large table right in the middle of the room. I'm the only person eating alone, and the eyes of everyone else in the room are on me, or at least that's how it feels. I'm sure they're all thinking that I'm a poor lonely man who has to go on holidays by himself. I try to pretend not to notice by looking at my iPad, in the hope that if I do this perhaps they will instead think that I'm an important businessman. I wonder if anyone ever comes to Ronda on business. We've heard that the bus ride to Seville will take two hours and is along a very windy ... read more

Issy sleeps in again. I don't know how. Someone started jackhammering the road outside our window in what felt like the middle of the night and they're still going. I have breakfast by myself again, the same as I did yesterday. I think the staff at the restaurant are starting to feel sorry for me. We decide that we'll try to hike down to the bottom of the gorge. Issy says that if we're going to do this she needs to buy some more suitable shoes. We Google "shoe shops" and find one nearby. Just as we get there Issy remembers that she doesn't have any socks with her to try the shoes on with. She spots a pair of shoes she likes and the shop assistant appears with a box in her size. He takes ... read more
