Dave and Elsie

Elsie and I are going on the biggest trip of our lives, so far at least, to explore Indochina. We have always had a fascination for travel but so many other things have always taken front stage to this until now. So here we go. Wish us luck, cause were taking it day by day. Yup that's right no plans whatsoever. No itinerary no nothin, just our backpacks. Oh we do have our first night Hotel reserved in Bangkok and were armed with Rough Guides for Thailand and Moon Handbooks copy for Vietnam,Cambodia and Laos. ps. Were a couple of early fifty year old Western Canadians, so this should be a real eye opener!Hell I can barely use a typewriter. If my daughter Jay reads this, I'm sure she'll be laughing right now.

This part of the trip was a little depressing but if I did not see the Vinh Moc tunnels myself I would never have believed that some 300 people lived in them for years. We walked in an area where hamburger hill was said to be but no one seems to be able to locate its precise location. There is very little left in the way of armorment laying around as it has all been scrounged up for use or sale. ... read more

The first place we landed in Vietnam was Hanoi and it might as well have been Mars. Dave kept saying get me out of here. I wanted to spend at least one day before we headed to the outer parts. We stayed in the old quarter or ancient part of town which is the dirtiest but deffiently has some really weird sights. It is conjested and is really hard to even walk on the side walk because it is covered in vendors, gambling, bars, motorbikes, and pretty much anything else you can think of. It really has your senses pumping and part of the challenge is just making it down the street without getting hit by some sort of vehicle of transportation. We had to cross one of the four lane roads outside the quater to get ... read more

Well we arrived safely after a grueling 25 hours of no sleep. When we arrived in Bangkok it was so hot and humid you could feel the warm damp air permiating your clothes in seconds. We have been to some pretty wild nightclubs, traveled the canels by longtail boats and seen the Grandpalace. Wow the sights are amazing and the contrast between poverty and wealth is miles apart. Dave is having a real hard time with the food and I burnt my mouth so bad on some red hot chili pepper. We are heading for the Chatachuk Weekend market place, which is suppose to be miles of incredible shopping. After we do that we will toss a coin to either go snorkeling in the south or Motorcycling in Chiang Mai in the North. From there who ... read more
