Round 1 - Fight! Since Simon had been in the area longer than the rest of us he knew about certain interesting bars to spend the evening. We went to a place called Tia Maria, which had some live bands, and began with a barrel of beer and lots of food. My normal diet at this point is getting severely neglected but I can't say I didn't see that coming. Now here I was drinking with two people from England and a man living in Ireland for the past few years. Needless to say this would not end well. We went through a couple of barrels of San Miguel beer, the Philippine pride and joy, before the shots started coming. Dave got us tequila shots since he reasoned we were in a "Mexican themed bar", and ... read more

The previous evening I met some new backpackers at the hostel. Dave and Kelly were an English couple that were coming from China and ultimately bound to end up in Australia on working visas. Simon was a fellow Canadian, originally from Halifax but has been living in Ireland for the past few years. We were all close in age. They asked me if I wanted to travel with them to see an underwater volcano in Tagaytay, which was somewhere south of Metro Manila area. Billy wasn't interested in going, but I instantly accepted the invitation and the following morning we were off. At first we took the LRT (Light Rail Transit) for a bunch of stations, then realizing we were lost, took a tricycle to the bus station. Simon and myself rode in one and had ... read more

We arrived in the evening at Ninoy Aquino international airport in Manila after a two hour flight from Hong Kong. After a lot of confusion we finally made it to our hostel in Santa Cruz, the Red Carabao. I was very impressed with the place, extremely clean and very pleasant staff. There was also a full kitchen so we went to the supermarket and picked up supplies like oatmeal, fruits, peanut butter, bread, etc. We also met a few other backpackers and I picked their brains for some info on areas they've been that we'd be heading to eventually. I'm still quite new to this whole backpacking thing, so I have a lot to learn. The following day when we awoke we ate and headed out, and boy did we get some good old culture shock. ... read more

After checking out from the YMCA we headed up Nathan Road, the largest and busiest street in Kowloon, and headed into a building filled with rooms for rent. We booked one for the evening at a fraction of the price we paid at the Y. We then headed to Victoria Harbour and paid for a hop on/hop off bus tour of the city. Also at the harbour was the Hong Kong walk of fame which showcased honk kongs cinematic achievements. The tour started in Kowloon and we got to see some amazing shopping areas and crammed markets selling everything imaginable. The shopping itself in HK is beyond anything I've ever seen. Shops are crammed every which way in pleuthora of mazes. One building might have 15 floors all of which have a hundred shops on each ... read more

I've never been one to sit still for extravagant amounts of time and all the flying we did today sure put me to the test. We left at about noon for Newark which was a simple one hour flight. Our layover was also pretty quick before boarding for our 16 hour flight to Hong Kong, the first destination of our Asian trip. Now the good thing, or only good thing about these long international flights was that each passenger gets his/her very own touch tone TV screen which is loaded with hundreds of movies, TV shows, video games, music, flight map etc. Gotta thank technology for making these endless hours bearable. Also Billy and I weren't seated together for some stupid reason, nor did we get isle seats like we requested but I guess that's how ... read more

This is being written about two months from my return to Vegas. Just thought I'd write up a short review of the trip and add some photos and stuff. Billy, a friend of many years, and myself had decided to go on a short trip a few weeks prior to get away from the old grind of everyday life. At this point Billy was really getting into poker and wanted to try his hand at the Vegas tables so he suggested we take a trip there. I'm not much of a gambler but then again Vegas was a city I knew I wanted to see at least once in my lifetime so I figured what the hell, this could be fun regardless. We left in the early hours of September 10th 2009 and were slated to ... read more
