Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Pattaya January 24th 2010

I took off from Bangkok to Pettaya for a day trip. I left at eight AM and it was only two hours away by bus. For the past few days I'd been itching to do something crazy and scoured my brain for what that could be. And then it hit me. I have to go skydiving. I looked up for some places and found one called Thai Sky Adventures, in fact it was the only continually operational drop zone in all of south east Asia, and only established since November. And it seemed like their pricing was better than back home too. When I arrived at the bus station I was picked up by Pete, the sales manager of the place and had to pretty much sign away my life and fill out the disclaimer forms. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan January 18th 2010

I left Ko Tao after all my diving courses were done and took a boat over to the nearby island of Ko Phan Ngan, only about an hour south. This is the island that has the world famous full moon parties, with travelers from all walks of life coming to see what they're all about. I'm not a huge party person but even I couldn't pass up the chance to see what the island was like. There would be no full moons while I was there but that didn't mean there wouldn't be a party to be seen for every night of my time on the island. Once I arrived I took a taxi to Haadrin, which was the main stretch of beach on the island where everything happened. I had bumped into a traveler much ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao January 10th 2010

I reached Ko Tao in the early hours of the morning after being crammed below deck of a fishing boat overnight, and as soon as my feet touched the ground it began to pour. I went into a restaurant for some breakfast as I waited for the rain to calm. The entire reason I traveled to this island was to go diving, as this was one of the best places in the world to do it. Or at least it once was, as unfortunately word of mouth had made it more popular which meant the coral reefs were suffering from overuse. I walked around for a while and made my way to Sairee Beach, the main beach of the island, and began shopping around for a diving place. After talking to a few people I heard ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand January 8th 2010

I crossed into Thailand on the 6th, and was looking forward to all that I had heard from so many different and varied travelers. Thailand seemed to have a lot to offer, from tropical islands dotted throughout the south to the bustling metropolis that is Bangkok to the rugged northern jungles and hills. I would be very much on the beaten path, but I was expecting as much. Thailand seemed to be a haven for backpackers and as such a massive tourist boom has happened, especially in the last ten to fifteen years. Known as Siam till 1939, it was the only country in south East Asia to not be colonized by a European power. Throughout my journeys to previous countries on this trip there has always been certain influences I've noticed from past conquerors. In ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur January 5th 2010

On New Years day I picked up my stuff and headed towards the bus station by my lonesome. Billy would be catching a flight to Bangkok and then Vietnam, so I was effectively a solo traveler. I still have a lot to learn in this regard. I bought a ticket to Malaysia's largest city, Kuala Lumpur, then just sat back as the bus drove on for a few hours. I must have fallen asleep on the way cuz when I woke up I could see the Petronas Towers in the distance and realized we had arrived. The bus dumped us all off and I tried to get my bearings and find the hostel address I had written down before leaving. Malaysians speak Bahasa Malaysian whereas in Indonesia they had been speaking Bahasa Indonesian which is more ... read more

Asia » Singapore January 1st 2010

We arrived from Jakarta on the 28th and as the plane approached Changi airport, my window seat gave me an incredible view of the port, biggest I have yet to see. The ships seemingly spread out forever, there were far too many to count. After disembarking we checked out the airport and everything we had heard of Singapore seemed to be true; impeccable cleanliness and unparalleled organization hit us like a punch to the nuts. We headed off to Little India, where the majority of backpacker hostels were located. Our hostel was called Welcome Inn, and our dorm room had twenty beds, which was awesome. I got to see topless Swedish chicks when I woke up in the morning. I met quite a few people and got to know a couple well, notably some travelers from ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java December 26th 2009

After spending a few days chilling out in Kuta, we decided it was time to move on. We got on a bus and drove to the north east point of Bali and then crossed over with a ferry. We then embarked onto a sixteen hour journey to get to the city of Yogyakarta, in central Java. Culture shock was in overdrive here. The main issue was that English was poorly understood, the vast majority of people we tried communicating with knew maybe a couple of words MAX. In fact many people didn't even use the words correctly which messed us up at times. Our bus ride was interesting to say the least. We sat right up at the front and had a huge view of everything ahead of us, which was both good and bad. There ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta December 22nd 2009

Being in Bali, one of the more famous surfing spots in the world, I definitely wanted to give it a shot and see what kind of skills I had. I went to some of the surfing schools along the beach, and after comparing some prices, decided on one and signed up for a few hours of lessons. My instructor was called Erik, actually it was an Indonesian name, but since it sounded so much like Erik I decided that's what I'd call him. At first we did a bunch of theory like board anatomy, ocean awareness, safety, etc. and then stuff like mounting the board and proper distribution of weight on it, and so on. All fine but I wanted to actually get into the water and do it! Besides I'm the type of person that ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud December 21st 2009

Ubud We flew into Indonesia via Jakarta, the capital city, and then almost immediately continued onward to Bali. We were greeted with the cheery sign "Welcome to Indonesia! Death penalty for drug traffickers!". After arriving at the main Bali airport, we oriented ourselves, and moved on to Ubud, a cultural town in the center of the island. Unlike the rest of Indonesia, which is primarily Muslim, Bali is mostly Hindu, and in fact is the largest Hindu enclave outside of India. As a result there were tons of Hindu temples of all sorts of shapes and sizes throughout the island. We stayed at Jati Homestay, Jati being some sort of famous painter from Bali. I perused through his gallery and noticed he loves painting artwork of topless women. When we arrived in the town we realized ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Boracay December 17th 2009

After leaving Manila, we booked a flight on Cebu Pacific, and headed off to Boracay Island, in the center of the Philippines. What we got was a stark contrast from the city, as this was a tropical island with crystal clear water and probably the nicest beaches I've ever seen to date. The only crappy thing was it was a little touristy but definitely a change of pace from Manila. We stayed at Frenz hostel which was the budget backpacker hub of the White Beach, which was the main area of this small island. It was sick how many different restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shops, etc and again very touristy so we kind of had to pick and choose where we ate and be economical. Still sometimes it was difficult, and I did end up splurging at ... read more
