Greyhound to Sydney On Tuesday morning, Danae and I headed back into Newcastle to catch the Greyhound bus down to Sydney. I had told Danae of my plans to travel after Nationals, and she decided she would come along with me. So, for three weeks, I had the company of a rather wacky Australian who often turned out to be a much tackier tourist than myself. It was good times... The ride was 2 and a half hours through the pretty New South Wales landscape. We had loads of food with us, since everyone had given us their leftover food from Nationals, so we snacked along the way. Mostly we napped and read the complimentary magazine. The funny thing about the Greyhound in Australia is that Australians don't ride it. It's filled with tourists, and only ... read more

Here's my run-down of Nationals. The best stories are in the pictures, though, so be sure to look through those... Tuesday - The Departure I woke up bright and early Tuesday morning for my flight to exciting Newcastle, New South Wales on the east coast for the AUSTRALIAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS!! Almost the entire team was on my same flight, which had a stop-over in Sydney. The highlights of the trip included the AMAZING views of Sydney from above and the wonderful plane for the 20-minute flight from Sydney to Newcastle. Danae and I had been joking in Perth that it would be one of those tiny planes with propellors and stuff - and we were actually RIGHT!! I was in row 9 and it was the LAST ROW!! Fun stuff! Anyways, that night we basically ... read more

So Week 1 of classes began on Monday, August 6th. I don't have class Monday or Tuesday this semester, so I had a bit of time to relax before I started class again. Monday, Thursday, and Monday I had some intense skating practices as we prepared for Nationals - the subject of my next blog entry. Tuesday night I went to see "Knocked Up" in Fremantle with my good friend Henriikka. Wednesday I had an INTENSE day of classes from 9:30AM to 6:30PM. But all my classes are pretty awesome so I got right back into things easily. Saturday I headed into Perth to meet a new friend, a Japanese girl named Mayumi. She was at Murdoch for a month taking an English course so I offered to show her around Perth. It was a nice ... read more

Alright now begins my story about the greatest place on earth, BROOME!! In the interest of getting caught up I'm going to cram all 4 days into this one entry so it might get a little long (and there will be LOTS of pictures). I appologize. Flight to Broome and Staircase to the Moon Thursday, August 2nd I headed to Perth airport for my flight. When I arrived at the airport I had the unfortunate news that my flight was slightly delayed - oh no! Luckily I had decided long in advance that for the 4 days of this trip I would be officially on 'Broome time' and go for the 'no worries' attitude that is so famous in Western Australia. I had a nice trip with a nice nap and I arrived safely at 'Broome ... read more

Now I get to play the fun game of catching up on school, my scrapbook (which is still back in June), and this here blog. But I sware to you the stories are about to get very interesting (and the photos spectacular) so hopefully you will all forgive me for my lateness. Alright so this was just another random week in my winter holidays. On Tuesday, July 24 I met up with my Finnish friend Henriikka for a night out in Fremantle (aka Freo). We had some delicious Mexican food (I was surprised to find there were non-Italian restaurants in Freo) then a night of great musical entertainment by a local artist, Matt Gresham. He was AWESOME. Thursday, July 26 I had my usual morning skating. In the evening I headed to my University to watch ... read more

There was some sort of server failure on Travelblog last week so a few of my entries have been lost. I'll try to recover them (I've recovered 3 others which were lost) or re-write them, although the details will be less than accurate at this point in time...The entries were all from a few months ago, so faithful readers will not be missing anything... Blades of Glory! Alright so Danae and I had wanted to see 'Blades of Glory' since before it came out, but all our attempts to organize a team outing were foiled. And now that the movie had been out for, like, a month, most of our team had gone to see it on their own. So we decided that we should just go see it. So Tuesday night, after our fitness class, ... read more

Happy Birthday to Meee!!! Ah, July 14th...my birthday. It may not be my first birthday away from home, but it was certainly my first birthday to fall in mid-winter. But it was a good day - and a good weekend (since technically 2pm on July 14th in Toronto is 2am on July 15th in Perth). Skating Exhibition I got to spent the actual day of my birth doing what I love best - skating. We had a skating exhibition to raise money for Nationals. When I arrived my entire team seemed to be missing but I was soon called to the changeroom, which had been decorated for my special day! I wore a special crown up to the point where we got on the ice (some people wanted me to skate with it on). We had ... read more

This blog entry was lost in the recent failure, and all the pictures went with it. It's quite time-consuming to upload pictures so I won't be re-uploading all of them. States On July 7-9 we had the State Championships at skating. All the best in the west came out to gain a spot at Nationals next month. We skated our short programme on Sunday and our long on Monday. Both went well, no falls and a solid effort by all. And I got to bring home a shiny gold medal for our uncontested victory (there are literally no other teams). A judge from the east came to judge and gave us some feedback on our programmes. With no more competitions until Nationals, we're hard at work to show the country what we've got! SoS July 9-13 ... read more

I haven't updated in a while so I'll continue with my stories. Not much to report from this time period, so these are some of the highlights from June 24-July 6: Garden City On Sunday, June 24 Gloria and I went to Garden City, a shopping mall about 15 minutes by bus from our house. They were having some sort of sale-xtravaganza and the place was PACKED!! In the end we purchased a rather random assortment of items including a bookcase, frying pan, photo album refill pages, and some pj's. The challenge was then to lug all this stuff from the bus stop and up a rather steep hill... Aussie Skate Demos On Wednesday the 27th and Sunday the 1st (Canada Day!) my skating team did some demos for the "Aussie Skate" kids (Australian learn ... read more

Perth revisited On Tuesday, I had myself a little day trip into Perth City. The main purpose of my trip was to help out the food co-ordinator of Students of Sustainability, an environmental conference being held at Murdoch in July. I've signed up to attend (might as well see what it's all about) so I thought I'd volunteer to help out beforehand. I went to a few stores and looked for bizarre items I've never heard of before. So it was an educational experience, and I got to help out a good cause! After walking to all the stores, I decided to explore Perth a bit and found myself at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Admission is free, so I went walking around. It was pretty, although VERY small. Everyone was trying to get ... read more
