Alright so today was day 6. And for those of us who had mattress set 6 and were in cabin 6, it was a day not to be forgotten. Athena had been complaining for a couple of days of bad stomach cramps, but she been trying to ignore them. However, they got really bad while at our sheep station, so she told Kim. He was afraid it might be appendicitis, so he suggested we stop in the town of Tom Price to have her checked out at the hospital. Of course the bad luck must come to both the 666 tentmates, so that morning while getting dressed, something flew into my eye. Something big, and painful. I tried eye drops. I even tried standing in the shower with the water running through my eye. Nothing ... read more

Today we woke up bright and early to head to Coral Bay, a small town along the coast of the Ningaloo Reef. Athena and I were the only certified divers on the trip, and we were looking forward to a day of first snorkelling with Manta Rays, then doing a reef dive. We pulled into Coral Bay before 8AM and Kim took Athena and I into the dive shop. When we got there, however, bad news awaited us. Extreme wind warnings were in effect, and no boats were going out onto the reef today. Can I just say this - DON’T GO TO CORAL REEFS WITH ME!! I BRING BAD LUCK!!! And I’d also like to point out (and this relates to the ‘6’ thing from yesterday) that it was only Athena and I who ... read more

Today was mostly a travel day. We made a stop in the booming metropolis of Carnarvon! We were told it was one of the biggest cities in the area, and that we would be spending about an hour in a SHOPPING MALL. I immediately knew what to expect - “they’ll have a Woolworth’s and a Target,” I declared and wouldn’t you know it, I was BANG ON!! They also had a Woolworth’s liquor and the Target was a special kind of Target - a Target COUNTRY. I didn’t go inside, so I’m not quite sure what the difference is. We arrived at our final destination of a sheep shearing station in the late afternoon. We were greeted with instant luxury - ROOMS with ELECTRICITY!! At this point in my story I should mention that we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Monkey Mia April 23rd 2007

Today we woke up, as all mornings, to Kim’s wonderful chant of ‘Wakey wakey!!’ We had a quick start since we would be camping in the same place the following night. So we packed our day bags and ate some breakfast, then were on our way to Monkey Mia in Shark Bay. As soon as we arrived at Monkey Mia we were able to witness its number 1 tourist attraction - the dolphins. A while ago a lady used to stand by these shores and feed a dolphin that came in every day. That dolphin went on to have babies who she taught to come to shore for a feeding. So, through purely natural instinct, a whole group of wild dolphins come to shore for a feeding several times a day. Only a limited number ... read more

Today we woke up to a magnificent sight - a rainbow! After snapping a few pictures, we packed up camp, had our breakfast and were on our way further north. Our first stop was a magnificent spot called Eagle's Nest. It's a little lookout spot along the coast atop some magnificent gorges. We then made a stop in the town of Kalbarri where some of the smarter members of our group purchased bug hats. I had brought two bandanas to use as my fly protection, and they proved to be quite effective, although slightly visually imparing. We then headed to Kalbarri National Park and went for a hike through the Murchison River gorge. This was our first experience with our newfound enemis - THE FLIES!! They were so bad we kept our hike brief and ... read more

I woke up bright and early on Wednesday to make my way to campus. On the bus ride there I saw another girl with luggage and a pillow and sure enough, she was on my trip. Our 'buck' (half bus, half truck) showed up just after 8 (we were told they'd be leaving at 8 sharp - which in Australian time means 8:30) and we all hopped on board. The first thing we all noticed - the chairs don't recline. That's great news when we'll be travelling 4500km!! I tried to sleep, and was somewhat successful. We made a bunch of "comfort stops" and stopped for lunch at a nice little spot on the water. We arrived at our final destination of Lynton-on-sea, a sheep shearing station, in the mid-afternoon. We had to pair up for ... read more

I've gotten way, WAY behind on these entries...time to play some catching up! I just returned from a 10-day trip to the Northwest so I've got lots of stories and LOTS of pictures. But first let me pick up where I left off... Monday to Wednesday Monday I helped out with an exchange fair at Murdoch. I got my own shnazzy badge and I had the task of representing all of Canada, even though my knowledge of the other schools on offer (SFU and UVic, which are both on the other side of the country, and the elusive Algoma University-College which is apparently in Sault Ste. Marie but which I hadn't heard of until I got here) leaves much to be desired. I started off alone but then Gen, my skating coach, showed up to ... read more

Monday to Thursday Morning Not much to report on those few days...Had my oral presentation in my water auditing class... Thursday morning my excitement was that I went FLYING off the end of a pinwheel at synchro! It was actually quite fun, as Kristy put it I fell on "soft bits" so I left with only this itty bitty bruise on my elbow. And it remains a joke AND a teaching lesson. "Remember, the middle of the wheel DOESN'T MOVE or we'll lose Dafne again!!" Good times... FILM FESTIVAL!! Alright so I think I'm all in with the film festival crowd. I volunteered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and now I've attended the slightly less publicized "City of Melville and Murdoch University International Film Festival"!! It was pretty good, cause every morning at 10AM ... read more

Penguin Island!! This week Monday was a bit out of the ordinary - I had a field trip! With my Nature-Based Tourism class, I headed down to Rockingham where we boarded a boat for Penguin Island! My stomach was relieved to see that the island was so close you could swim there. First, though, we went on a little boat tour around the area and saw some Sea Lions, Pelicans, and even some dolphins! (Couldn't get a good picture of the dolphins, they move too fast). Then we went onto the little island. First we went to the Penguin exhibit where they have 10 little penguins that they keep in captivity. The reason for this is to ensure that people who come to a place called "Penguin Island" actually get to see some penguins! Out in ... read more

Routine Blah blah Monday classes, skating. Tuesday class...went to a fitness class for the first time for my skating team and it KILLED me!! My legs hurt for DAYS!! I have gotten out of shape...Wednesday I was in pain as I went to class... But I had some excitement Wednesday - a lab! I haven't had a lab since high school! It was a water auditing lab, and I was with a group of hilarious guys. But I won in the end when I was the only one who knew the acceleration due to gravity (9.81!! one guy was like 'it's 10'. I told him my old Physics teacher would kill him.) But ya, someone should call ol' V-Bomb and let him know I REMEMBER SOMETHING FROM GRADE 11 PHYSICS!! That no one else, despite the ... read more
