Asia » China » Beijing May 15th 2012

A little after noon on Monday, May 14, we landed in Beijing! We were greeted by Jay, a co-worker at the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD) where we will be working. He took us to our hotel and then took us to a shopping centre so we could get some essentials. Our hotel is very basic but it's comfortable. At least we have internet and air conditioning (though the remote for mine seems to be broken because I can't adjust the temperature). The shower doesn't have walls or a curtain, it just drains into the bathroom floor. I don't really care because I have my own room so it's not like someone will walk in on me. But it does make the whole bathroom wet when you shower. Apparently there's one English channel ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Incheon May 14th 2012

안녕 (AKA "An nyoung") from Korea!! Fernanda and I left Los Angeles at 11:30pm on Saturday, May 12 and landed in Incheon, the airport just outside of Seoul, at 4AM on Monday, May 14. Gotta love the international date line! There isn't much to tell right now. We went for a final dinner at the North Beach Caffe in Manhattan Beach and it was delicious. Other than that, we're both feeling sweaty and gross and we can't wait to get to our hotel in Beijing and take a nice shower. Enjoy some early photos! -Dafne... read more

Since classes ended a few weeks before I left for China, I had some time to just enjoy myself and hang out in LA. Some highlights of this time include the end-of-year banquet for planning students, watching the Kings dominate in playoff hockey, and watching USC sadly lose in the NCAA volleyball finals (it was a nail-biter!!) My next entry will be from Beijing so stay tuned!! -Dafne... read more

After Spring Break, it was basically crunch time until the end of the semester. There were lots of long hours spent hammering out essays and preparing group presentations, but there was still time for some fun. Most notably, I went to the 2012 United States Universities National Debating Championships April 13-15 in Salem, Oregon. My partner had never been to a debate tournament before but we finished an impressive 39th out of over 150 teams - missing the Octofinals by just 7 spots. My team had a great time and it was a great end to our very first semester as a club! -Dafne... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Salt Lake City April 25th 2012

I decided to have an unorthodox spring break and I headed to Utah with my good friend Kiera for a few days of fun. The inspiration for my trip was the Pacific Coast Adult Sectionals, a figure skating competition, where I competed in Gold Solo Dance. However, I knew the trip would be amazing because, well, Utah is just so awesome!!! We really do need to kick out the mormons because I would move to SLC if they weren't there. Anyways, once again, in the interest of time, the pictures will tell the stories. We left on Thursday, March 15 and drove to Salt Lake City. On the 16th we visited Anteloppe Island in the Great Salt Lake. On the 17th we headed down to Provo for the competition. On the 18th we began the journey ... read more

North America » United States » California » Los Angeles April 22nd 2012

Well the good news is that I'm done with classes! And the exciting news is that I'm going to China this summer!! But I have a lot of catching up to do if I'm going to get the rest of this semester up here before I depart for Beijing. Today's pictures take us on two field trips, through MANY free events (most of which were part of grad student appreciation week) and into Spring Break. My next post will be the main event of my spring break - a trip to Utah! But for now enjoy these great photos and memories. -Dafne... read more

North America » United States » California » San Diego February 9th 2012

From December 10-12, I headed down to San Diego with my friends from urban planning. We stayed with my friend Tiffany and celebrated her birthday. We also visited some of the sites around this beautiful coastal city, particularly in Encinitas, La Jolla and Coronado. I hope to return one day to visit the zoo - no one would go with me this trip! -Dafne... read more
