Well, we made it home today after all. When we were heading into Kentucky and realized that we would be stopping for the night at 2:00, we decided to punt and head for home! As I said to a friend last night—I miss my bed but we have a comfortable bed in the RV. I REALLY miss my high speed internet!! We pulled out of camp at 9:00 with...of course...our first stop being a nearby Walmart. The main reason for that stop was to check our tires to make sure we were OK before leaving the area where the shop that took care of us yesterday was located. Gun shy? Yes. We were heading out from there at 9:30. There was very heavy truck traffic all the way home today. This is the most of that ... read more

We were up and rolling a little earlier this morning...pulling out at 9:00. We had heard a weird sound from the truck when we pulled into camp yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, we heard it again even worse when we drove out of the campground this morning. Fortunately for us, we were just about four miles from a truck repair place (Effingham Tire and Repair Center) with a great reputation...sort of like Hobbs at home. At any rate, we stopped in there to get an idea of what was going on. Of course we had to get in line with folks with appointments but that was fine with us. After about an hour, a tech came out and checked our brakes. As John had thought, we had brake and rotor issues. The tech was able to find the ... read more

This isn’t our most exciting day, unless you are one of our complaining neighbors that think we need to hurry home...and you KNOW who you are... Just Saying... We pulled out of camp a little later than usual (10:15) mainly because we got into an interesting conversation with a Canadian couple that were in the site next to us. They have recently retired and were on their way to Newfoundland and then back to the Maritime Provinces and then more touring in Canada as they head back to British Columbia Province with no particular time frame. They were delightful, and we very much enjoyed talking to them. We crossed the border (the Mississippi River) into Illinois at 10:45, stopping for pictures at the Welcome Center. It was 80 degrees and humid...not boding well for our arrival ... read more

We pulled out at 9:30 into a cool, cloudy morning. It was 62 degrees. Yay! It would be delightful if we get this when we get home...at least long enough to unload Mufasa! We drove through Cedar Rapids, Iowa and were amazed at the amount of industries there. We had seen a sign when we entered Iowa yesterday stating that they loved both their silos and their smoke stacks. I guess areas like this is what they meant. Our first stop was at an Iowa Rest Area to hop on WiFi to post yesterday’s blog post. It was quick, quick! LOVE good WiFi. A “chore” we had on our list was to mail a birthday card to one of my cousins. We plugged Post Office into the GPS and it sent us off at the exit ... read more

It was a beautiful morning as we pulled out at 10:00 heading south on I-35. We could just have dropped on down I-35 S to your house Laura...except you aren’t home!! We came the last few days from areas that were indeed “the land of 10,000 lakes” to vast fields of very flat land which then morphed into gently rolling hills full of prosperous looking farms. Our first stop was at the Iowa Welcome Center, and what a welcome stop it was! You can tell by the pictures that it is indeed unusual and the folks that worked there were tops. As you can also see from the pictures John found his new favorite friend who sold him a piece of Rhubarb Pie. Barb, you better quickly make sure you are still at the top of ... read more

We pulled out of camp at 9:30 (after posting last night’s blog up next to the office where they actually had a signal!!) into a gray and cool morning. Happily the longer the day went on, the more sunshine we had and we finally had a very nice afternoon with blue skies. The afternoon temps are starting to be a title warmer every day...REALLY looking forward to the heat and humidity at home?? Our first stop was to take on fuel and then we headed to downtown Minneapolis for our own planned tour of the city thanks to Steve B, Tim D, and Jane and Marv’s suggestions. Thank you, we think! We drove by the Target Center where the Minnesota Twins play. It is right in the downtown area. Parking must be a nightmare. From there ... read more

We pulled out of camp around 9:30, making the local Walmart our first stop. We got fuel and then went into the store to pick up a few small items, including fresh raspberries and fresh sweet cherries.Yum! While we were in the parking lot we made a phone call to Melissa D to welcome her to the blog. Since we had sorta kinda learned a lesson about finding campgrounds in Minnesota during high season yesterday, we called a KOA fairly close to Minneapolis and made reservations for tonight. On our drive today we crossed the Mississippi River about three times—each time we crossed it, it was a little bit wider! Amazing. We passed many, many lakes which made one of our discoveries later make a little sense once we realized what we were looking at. We ... read more

We were late leaving this morning which semi got us in a little bit of an irritating situation later in the day. However, we needed the down time, and alls’ well that ends well! We pulled out of camp at 10:20. By the way, there was a sign in the campground office that we thought was pretty cute: “Camping: Where you spend a small fortune to live like a homeless person.” Our morning was perfect at 73 degrees and a low humidity level. Arriving in the town of Bemidji at 10:45 we went looking for information on the headwaters of the Mississippi. As it turns out from information we got at a Science Center in town and along the way at different venues during the day, the facts are clear in that—the facts are NOT clear! ... read more

First to finish up with yesterday: we took a walk by the Lake of the Woods after supper yesterday evening. You can see by the pictures that it was a very peaceful walk. As a matter of interest, I find the glaciated sculpting of the rocks that are the Canadian Shield to be fascinating. You can see by the pictures that tremendous pressure was put on these rocks by the glaciers that rode over them during glacial periods. They scraped everything down to the bedrock as they drove through, scratching the rocks as they went. This has always fascinated me. The striations are very clear. This morning when we got up the outside temp (wait for it Brently!) was 53 degrees with a crisp 60 degrees inside...until John got up and turned the heat on! We ... read more

We pulled out of camp at 9:30 into a cool morning—62 degrees with clear blue skies and the wind blowing. Our first stop was at the Canadian Mint where we promptly signed up to take a tour at 10:00. The tour was interesting and had a larger crowd than we would have thought on a Monday morning. Everyone was quite respectful to the docent who walked us through the area so we could all hear what she was saying. The Canadian Mint has contracts with over 72 countries throughout the world, including the US. They do NOT mint coins for us, however, they do supply some of the blanks we use to mint our coins in the States at one of our four mints. They do a lot of specialty coins, such as the Olympic Medals, ... read more
