We pulled out at 8:00 as per usual on a transfer/travel day. The start of our day was with 50ish degrees temperature, cloudy and a misty rain which changed to sun about the time we crossed the Scottish border! We have been very lucky in our weather so far...perfect in fact. We passed a much more industrial area on our drive on first part of day on our way through the Liverpool /Manchester area on M6 going north. We saw part of a 30 mile canal built from the Irish Sea from Liverpool to Manchester, England. We saw Manchester in the distance. We stopped at Grasmere in the Lake District National Park for a coffee/bathroom break. We bought some gifts at The Grasmere National Park Heritage Trust Store. We had another busy day today as you will see from the pictures. I didn’t have time to make notes today but did copy and paste with info on all that we saw. Tomorrow we will be on the road once again...stay tuned! Below is info on North Wales: “North Wales is a region within Wales, a country in the U.K. Snowdonia National Park is a vast, rugged area with waterfalls and trails, including routes up Mount Snowdon. Medieval Conwy Castle has 8 huge towers, plus battlements with sea views. It’s near the resort town of Llandudno, with North Shore Beach. Other castles include 19th-century Penrhyn Castle, with Gothic stairways, and waterside Caernarfon Castle.” Below is information on Horseshoe Pass from Wikipedia: “The Horseshoe Pass (Welsh: Bwlch yr Oernant, "Pass of the Cold Stream") is a ... read more

LAST NIGHT: We had a fantastic evening. At 6:00 we were taken to Cardiff Castle for a Medieval Banquet which was more than delightful. The musical talent rivaled Nashville. We were serenaded both in Welsh and English by five very talented singers. Our meal was very good too, but the highlight was our evening tour was of the tower inside the walls of the outer bailey of the castle. You will see from the pictures how elaborate it was. I don’t think we have ever seen anything like that. There is much more to Cardiff Castle than we had the time to see, so please Google for more info. PS...NOTE TO DR. NICOLE...to get to the top of the Clock Tower we had to climb 130 steps up on a circular stone staircase. We made need ... read more

AIS at 7:54! Beautiful morning, albeit a cool one at 44 degrees but forecast to be in the low 70’s. We were out of Devon and heading towards Cardiff about 40 minutes into our drive this morning. We were in and out of fog drIrving across the moors, which was sort of “Hound of the Baskervilles” feeling! Lovely country with rolling hills, fields of sheep, and neat hedgerows. We had a great stop in Bath (thought about you Angela!”)! Our first stop was the Roman Baths which were fascinating. This was a nice long stop so we had plenty of time to look at the Baths and then walk around. We had Sally Lund Cream Tea at Sally Lund Tea Room. Delicious. We could have used another hour of sleep last night, but nonetheless, we were up and ready for breakfast at 7:00 with AIS (ass in seat!!) at 8:00. Perfect morning! We drove back through Bodmin Moor heading towards Cornwall and an immersion into the smuggling and tin mining culture of years past. We passed lots of fields with root vegetables, lots of fields with lots of sheep, lots of wind turbines, and lots of solar panels. Cornwall claims to be most eco friendly county in England. Another note of interest...Cornwall grows LOTS of daffodils and there is a lot of research going in to a possible treatment for Alzheimer’s and dementia treatment. Amazing! Cornwall produced 91% of the workd’s tin supply in the 1990’s. We made a good stop in Marizon, a Medieval town. While there ... read more

This was another long but good day. We were in our coach at 8:30 heading through the English county of Devon to the county of Cornwall. Devon is amazingly beautiful. We did end up seeing some of the rock fences outlining fields that we were so familiar with in Ireland. The weather was perfect—fairly cool—in the mid to upper 50’s—with clear blue skies and a few puffy clouds. It was a good thing that the weather was so nice since all of our activities were mostly outside. Our first stop was at the Jamaica Inn of Daphine Du Mourier fame—writer of the famous book, Rebecca—which was made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock. The Jamaica Inn was in the book. I may have to re-read it. It is also in the area where the PBS series, ... read more

Folks, this is going to be a short one tonight! It is 9:00, we just got back from a wonderful meal, and we have to meet the group at 7:30 in the morning when we will have breakfast before starting on a LONG day of touring. Touring is NOT for sissies for sure! We have had a wonderful day. As the title indicates, I clicked two big items off of my bucket list today. They included seeing Stonehenge, which I wrote my high school term paper on way back ___ (fill in the blanks!) years ago, and seeing the Magna Carta in Salisbury Cathedral was another long held wish. Imagine doing both in the same day! I could write paragraphs about both, but I am tired and ready to hit the hay, so you are just ... read more

Wow! We went to bed last night at 6:30...actually it would be more accurate to say that we passed out AFTER I almost set another small fan (I brought one with me...don’t ask) on fire. I give up—small appliances just do not work in Europe. Sigh. Luckily, I was so tired I didn’t miss its “white noise”. In fact, according to John, this hotel lies on a major flight path out of London. Who knew. I never heard a thing until I woke up at 7ish this morning. Yay me! At any rate, we had a great night’s sleep and were ready to go this morning, albeit slowly. We did wake to rain and cool weather—in the high 40’s. After we had breakfast and then left the hotel to get in a walk around the town, ... read more

Whew! We have had a LOONNGGG day today for sure! I am still running on the sleep I got before I posted yesterday evening. Can you spell “screaming, sobbing and hysterical tantrum”? And that was just the mother of the child who was sweaty and LOUD two rows up and one row over from us on the plane...ALL night long!! That kid has one strong set of lungs for sure and the mother needs anger management courses. It was an experience. We arrived in London at 10:20 making us a 7 hour flight that usually takes 8 hours. We were late leaving the gate in Nashville, and the pilot made up the lost time and then some on the way East. Kim you were correct...it is a very long hike from Gate 5 to get to ... read more

This will be (hopefully) a fun rendition of our first trip to England—with an overlap of some sites in Scotland that we saw last year. The title I have chosen is just because we fell in love with Eeyore in the movie “Christopher Robin” this summer and loved this quote. We think it is funny. Here’s hoping we will have a more positive trip than Eeyore would likely have! When we learned last year that British Airlines was going to begin non-stop service between Nashville and Heathrow Airport in London, England we decided that might be a fun way to make another trip overseas. Against our usual method of travel which CAN consist of simply saying: “Hey...that sounds like fun!” and hitting the road—we broke tradition and made our reservations in May. It really is unbelievable ... read more
