Well I am sorry to report that the weather in Budva wasn't all that much better than the weather in Ostrog and Budva really wasn't the most exciting place on the planet. It was raining in the morning so that put the damper on any plans to get out onto the water and have some fun on the water. Instead we had to shelter in cafes and drink tea and coffee and check the internet until the rain showers cleared. And to be honest that is pretty much all we did in Budva, up until about 6pm when Susie and I decided that we wanted to go for a walk. So we headed out for a walk and decided to walk left. And boy did we walk left. We walked for approx 1.5 hours and found ... read more

Europe June 23rd 2009

Yesterday was a bit of a travel day. We had to leave Sarajevo (sad sigh) and head towards the border for Montenegro as our destination for the night was the Ostrog Monestary up in the hills. This involved a 6 hour bus trip, which really is a little while to spend on a bus, and then a short private transfer to our accomodation for the night which as the monks dormitory. This was going to be most interesting as the dormitory really is part of the monestary and there are strict rules around what you can and can't do. Some of these rules involve the fact that boys and girls have separate rooms and never shall the two meet :) The weather for the last couple of days has just been miserable. It has been cold ... read more

Yesterday we had to get up nice and early (again!) to catch a 6 hour bus to Sarajevo. I have to say that the journey on the bus was far more lovely than the train ride into Serbia. The scenery on the way into Bosnia was just beautiful. There were beautiful hills and lakes and forests. I can see why the Serbs would have wanted this countryside. When we got to Sarajevo we checked into a delightful little pension which is run by a family and then headed straight out again to get some lunch as it was rather late in the afternoon by this point. Chris took us to a wonderful little restaurant in the older district of Sarajevo where we had a dish called Lapinja with Cevapi. This is basically grilled pork in a ... read more

We had to get up nice and early to catch the train to Belgrade. It was quite amusing as the very second that we had all hopped on the train the train moved out of the station. 20 minutes early. We were all a little surprised by the fact that the train was leaving ahead of schedule until Chris told us that this was in fact the 6:30am train that was in fact leaving an hour late, not the 7:30am train leaving early. Welcome to Serbia :) I think we were all a little dubious when we walked off the train into the Belgrade train station. It certainly wasn't the most salubrious train station in the world and it probably didn't help that the last thing that we saw on the train before we arrived was ... read more

Europe » Serbia » North » Novi Sad June 15th 2009

Yesterday we had to leave the wonders of Budapest and head towards Novi Sad in Serbia. Susie and I were actually a little sad to be leaving Budapest in the end as we had actually discovered that we liked it quite a bit. However it was off to Novi Sad with us. Luckily our train wasn't until 1:10pm so we still had a bit of time to enjoy the wonders of Budapest. So in the morning we headed off down to the main shopping street Vaci Uta which was the street that we were trying to head for the other day when we went on our big walk. However there are two Vaci Uta streets in Budapest and of course we managed work our way down to the other street, which wasn't the one that we ... read more

Today we left Slovakia and took a train to Budapest. The train trip was quite a fun experience. We had to take 3 different trains and somehow we didn't manage to keep quiet through the entire journey. Susan, myself and our tour leader Chris ended up sharing a carraige for a lot of the time and there was a lot of giggling occuring throughout the 6 hour journey. When we got into Budapest Chris took us for a brief orientation tour of Budapest. This involved a walk through the streets to the State Opera House, St Stephen's Church, Roosevelt Square and the Chain Bridge, and then over the Chain bridge to Buda Castle. The State Opera House is very lovely from the outside and is apparently beautiful on the inside as well. St Stephen's Church was ... read more

Yesterday we left the wonders of Poland to cross into Slovakia again. This actually turned out to be quite a journey. Luckily (or unluckily as it turned out) we didn't have to start this journey for a little while. Chris, our tour leader, told us to meet in the hotel reception at 12:10 to go to the bus station. This meant that we had the whole morning free to explore a bit more of Krakow. My roommate Susan decided to start the morning off with a bit of a speed walk around the walls of the old city. However since my knee has been playing up quite a bit I decided that it probably wasn't the best idea for me to join her on this walk. So I decided to lollop around in bed for a ... read more

Today was lovely. The weather was just beautiful, sooooo warm and sunny (well at least until it started raining :) Most of the group met up at 10:00am to go for a 4 hour guided bike tour of Krakow. This was one of the best bike tours that I have done in the longest time. It was amazing. We had a really great guide called John from Tampa, Florida but who has been living in Krakow for the last 11 years. John took us all over Krakow and showed us the history and the sights. We went through the main square, the castle, out to the old jewish ghetto but the best part of the tour was when John sat us all down outside of Schindlers factory and told us a 20 minute story about Oscar ... read more

Today we were picked up from our lovely little pension in the middle of nowhere (Teplice) and driven off in private mini vans towards Krakow, which would be our new home for the night. The vans were driven by two lovely guys, and our driver was just hilarious. He had a real sense of humour on him. Most of the day was spent driving from the Czech Republic into Poland (although we did cross the border only 1 hour after we left Teplice). However we had a pretty major stop to make on the way. Auschwitz. Now I had been really looking forward to going to Auschwitz and I had a pretty clear image in my mind of what the camp would look like. For some reason I was picturing a dark and gloomy castle, perched ... read more

Well our dinner the other night was interesting. But probably the most interesting thing that happened was the club that we went out to afterwards. This club was out in the suburbs somewhat and was decorated in the most amazing manner (check out the photos). However the bad thing about the club was the fact that my camera got stolen. Right out of my handbag. I even saw the guy doing it. However I was just a second or two too slow to stop it from happening. It was amazing, the guy literally just bolted. However luckily for me I had downloaded all of my photos for the day onto my laptop before we went to the club, so I really only lost a few photos of the club, which I have since replenished with photos ... read more
