Today was the last day of the Baltics Eastern Europe tour with Intrepid. We started the day nice and early by meeting Andy (our tour leader) in the reception of the hotel at 6am. Unfortunately when we woke up this morning we discovered that we had woken up into the middle of a rather large thunderstorm, complete with window shattering thunder and a torrential downpour. This meant that we weren't really looking forward to the 15 minute walk to the tram stop. However we made trip to the train station without getting too wet and managed to catch the 7:23 train from Warsaw to Berlin. The train ride was uneventful. However the train itself was heavenly in comparison to the trains that we had to catch from Lithuania to Warsaw. This train had a dining cart ... read more

Yesterday was the hell travel day. We had to undertake 14 hours on trains and trams to get from the National Park to Warsaw, only arriving into Warsaw at 9:30pm. However this didn't stop us from getting up nice and early this morning and heading out into Warsaw. The morning started off with a bang when we decided to check out the breakfast in the hotel which we had been told would cost us 20 Zolatys if we wanted to have it (as it wasn't included in the room rates). But the staff in the breakfast room didn't ask us for our room number or for us to pay when we had the breakfast so we ended up with breakfast for free. The next exciting event of the morning was when I was standing in the ... read more

We left Vilnius at a frightfully civilised time today. 10:45. It was so civilised that MK and I had time to pop down the road and have another bowl of porridge for breakfast and after breakfast we had time for a wee stroll along the river. Luckily Andy took us on the local trams to get to the train station. We had walked to the train station the day before and none of us were relishing the concept of potentially having to do the 30 minute walk again with heavy backpacks on our backs. Our train ride to the national park was pleasant and short. It only takes about 2 hours to get out to the national park from Vilnius. We were met at the train station in the local village by a man with ... read more

Today has been a bit of a lazy day for me. For some reason I am just absolutely shattered today. So tired that I can't quite seem to keep up with the rest of the group today. And we are talking about the fact that I can't keep up with a couple who are in their 70's and another couple that are in their 60's and here is me pootling along like an old granny at the age of 31. Anyway this morning MK and I rebelled against yet another breakfast of bread and cheese and decided to head out to a breakfast cafe to get a nice bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. So at 8am exactly we were stepping through the door of Double Coffee (which only opens at 8), stepping over the cleaner with ... read more

Today saw us up and out of Klaipeda and off on the bus to Vilinius (the capital of Lithuania). The first thing that we had to do before we could leave Klaipeda was to take a photograph us all of the card carrying members of the Olympic Casino. :) The weather deteoriated as we got closer to Vilnius until it was raining pretty constantly when we were getting off the bus. This gave me a bit of a dilemma. What was I going to do with Pugsy. He has a bag to ride in, but the bag is pretty full with books and the laptop etc and this meant that when he was at the top of the bag he was fully exposed to the rain. The only thing that I could come up with to ... read more

Today we went to the Curonian Spit. This involved us having to get up relatively early to make sure that we had breakfast and were at the ferry terminal in time for the 9am ferry. The hotel that we were staying at actually delivers breakfast to your room in a little wicker basket, so we had all asked for our breakfasts to be delivered at 8am to make sure that we had lots of time to eat and get ready to meet our tour guide at 8:45am. Unfortunately the breakfasts still hadn't arrived at 8:30am. MK and I have a strange door just beside the entrance to our room that has been locked since we got here and we couldn't work out what would be in the room. Well we found out at 8:35am when ... read more

Today was a bit of a travel day. But the good news was that the travel day only started at 11:45 so we had most of the morning free. MK, Jen and I decided to head off to the Coffee House for breakfast, where I had the most delicious bowl of porridge. The only hitch in the plan was the fact that we had to walk past 3 of the stores to find one that was open. Apparently they all only open at 9am - not sure what all the office workers who want coffee before work do. After our delicious breakfast we headed off to walk around the old town for a little while. This turned out to be a slightly expensive morning as I bought a lovely amber necklace and matching set of earrings ... read more

This morning we headed off to the Riga Outdoor Ethonological Museum. This was about 30 minutes out of town on the bus and was actually really worthwhile. However the weather was absolutely freezing!!!! Apparently there is due to be about 3 days of north winds which are not the warmest things in the world. In fact they are down right freezing. So there we were, out in the forest walking all around for 2.5 hours in the ice cold north artic winds. The musuem itself is really interesting. What they have done is gather together all the old buildings from the 18th and 19th century and have located them in an outdoor museum. The museum represents the 4 different regions of Latvia and the different building and living style that they used to have. My favourite ... read more

Today we had to get up rather early (5am) to get ready so we could meet at 6am to walk to the local bus station and catch the 7am bus to Riga. Now the Eastern European buses are nothing like the Indian Buses which were my most recent bussing experience. The first difference was the fact that there are individual, allocated seats for each person, there weren't 200 people trying to get onto a bus that has a capacity of 50, the seats recline, there was a toilet on the bus, and most surprising of all, the bus was enabled with WiFi. This all made for a very pleasurable 4.5 hour bus journey. The country side between Tallinn and Riga was just lovely as well. It reminded me a lot of driving in the forests around ... read more

Today was a glorious day. The weather was superb and we went on a bike tour of Tallinn. The bike tour was fantastic. If you are ever in Tallinn I can totally recommending going to the City Bike Hostel and doing their 2 hour tour of Tallinn. The bike that I had was the coolest bike ever. It was an old school bike and I felt exactly like Anne of Green Gables when I was riding it around. We started the ride off in the old town of Tallinn and then headed off towards the suburbs. We rode through Kadriorg Park which is a glorious park about 2kms out of town. The park as well as the Kadriorg Palace were designed by Peter the Great for his wife Catherine I. From the park we were led ... read more
