I'm currently on an internship for the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, Florida through the River's Institute. Here, I am developing interpretive signage for a River Walk and representative exhibits for it's model in the museum, the River Wall.

Monday, August 6, 2012: To Gainesville! It was a long trip there, and I was sick from eating so much to try to keep myself occupied until 1 30 AM. That was a good plan – try to eat myself awake… Anyhow, when we finally got there it was lunch time, so we ate at this awesome place called Bagels Unlimited. I really wish one was right down the street. It’s cheap, delish and it had tons of veggie options. I had scrambled tempeh with a bagel with walnut cinnamon spread. I was full right into dinner. I couldn’t finish dinner because I was still so full. Anyhow, the museum of natural history was so great. It was nice to see another museum and what it had to offer. I liked the fact that it was ... read more

Monday, July 30, 2012 : Well I ran… cried a while and then took a shower. Since the water hurt the top part of my foot, I assumed my food had enough of my bull. Apparently, I should give it a rest. Mom’s frustrated with me, but I took all day off and RICEd it the whole time. Tuesday, July 31, 2012: Jeff’s computer was occupied today, so we ran out of stuff half way through the day. I went to find Ashley to find something to do, but when I got back there, she was out. I did run into Matt when I went to her office. He gave me a lovely job. I got to organize the library outside his office. Sometimes I really like working alone in a quiet room. I left to ... read more

Monday , July 16, 2012 : Today was productive and easy going at the same time. We’ve got a pretty nice set up. I’m sure it’s not the same way for everyone here since Snooty’s birthday is fast approaching. We decided to make the 8 words of the museum (life adapts, everything changes, interactions happen, and place matters) the centerpiece of the signs. After work, three people offered to give us a ride home! It was funny – but a bit of a dilemma for a while. We couldn’t find Sam who offered us a ride first. Fortunately, she showed up, and we got to see her new apartment – She signed the lease and everything! When we got back, Shannon shared her yoga sequence she made with me, then we ate. Tuesday , July 17, ... read more

Monday, July 9, 2012 Dolphin survey today! It was awesome! We got to do salinity testing, red tide sampling, and descriptions for each dolphin find. I’m not going to lie… I had a lot of practice looking for bugs with Nick, so I’ve got to say I was doing alright at spotting them. Tuesday, July 10, 2012 We went to the library today to look up more Bradenton specific information. Unfortunately, they didn’t have much, but they did have really great children’s books that helped a ton. I think we’ll go back again soon. The library also had a book store. I’d like to volunteer there, but I’m pretty busy as is. The bookstore had paperbacks for 50 cents and hard covers for one dollar. It was awesome. I wanted to stay longer, but we were ... read more

Monday, July 2, 2012 When we got to the museum, we were told that Dr. Murphy was a teeny late, so I ate the rest of my breakfast while I edited one of my 500 worders. When it was time, we went to the back of Snooty’s pool to wait. When the doctor came up, Matt was waiting to help Shannon network. I felt bad, as he was taking time out of his day to help us and first we were late leaving the condo because I didn’t look for him at a different parking spot and now because we were just standing watching Snooty while he was networking for us. Perhaps, I am simply being silly, but I don’t feel that I am being appreciative enough. Snooty’s exam was quite interesting – I know that ... read more

Monday:Matt picked us up because of the storm this morning. He took us to the shore of the Manatee River before we went in. It was lovely I have some pictures. There was no shore where we walked up – we were standing on the rocks that separate the shore and the parking lot. It was awesome. When we came in we searched the walls for water stains. It turns out that concrete block walls that surround the outside of the building can have water seep through. It looks like mold bubbling beneath a layer of paint and above the stone bricks. The tissue paper covering the items in storage can pick up the moisture and it can ruin the artifacts. Our building also has a roof that has rubberized layer above a couple of foam ... read more

Monday: We came in a little late today, as Shannon felt a little sick after eating take-out. We got in around 12 30 and began working on ideas. It was tough to agree on what sorts of information we should start putting into writing. After talking to Matt, we both realized that we didn’t have a set or exact goal with the facts. Once we have them all down and figured out, then we organize and make them more readable. Tuesday: Today was a little slow, as Shannon wasn’t feeling well again. I didn’t want to say much to her, but I think she’s actually sick. I hope she starts feeling better soon. Our task was to continue with putting the facts into words that we will cut out into slips of paper. In my head, ... read more

Monday: Today began with chatting with everyone, getting some more direction, and some more research on the butterfly garden specifically in our office – I don’t know if I mentioned this, but we – college interns- have our own office. It’s like an ice box, and I love it. Matt ate with us – I think joining around food helps humanize people. That is, I feel that even though I think he’s incredibly smart and our boss, he’s approachable and does what he can to make us feel at home. We left for another field trip after a couple hours of more researching. We went to Emerson’s point, and hiked around a bit. Then we made our way to Terra Ceia Bay. After we went to the mouth of the manatee river we came back and ... read more

Thursday: We put together a Wentz scope! It required attaching and mounting it onto a random board Matt found around his office. When we were finally done, it worked! It took a lot longer than I thought it would, but it’s better to be slow and circumspect than quick and careless. After that we researched butterfly gardens and left for the day. Yes, we spent most of the day putting together a microscope, but it was still fulfilling. We left early to get a bus pass, but we passed it and needed to get back to fixing the screen door. After a quick break and cleaning up, we went to the beach, and then Mexicalis until 10 30- Friday: Today was an early start, as Dr. Philipp needed to leave for the airport at 8AM. That ... read more

We met Matthew Woodside and Jeff Rodgers about the overview of the internship today. We got to touch Snooty! I was afraid to touch his skin because it looked like parts were ruffled up like it was coming off. His snout has bristles on them that were a bit scary, but it just felt like rubber bristles. He has a triangle shaped body because his musculature, from pulling himself up on the side of his pools. Turns out he lived in really shallow water for the first part of his life. Fortunately, he was able to get the big deep aquarium on the second floor, but he apparently didn’t like it right away. He needs the shallow ends that surround the feeding area to ease into the pool. Also, he is the only manatee that can ... read more
